De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

With that tiny body charm and a normal human head you’ll look like Stewie Griffin.

This wins the internet of the day 😂

And I'm dying to know....have any of these worked yet, @SlothSpiritAnimal ?!

Bet it's not with dark green wall tiles and dark, mottled grey floor tiles though?!

Sorry, just had a peek on the pic, it's dark brown mottled tiles on the floor.

MyrtleLion · 29/01/2026 10:41

Best tip I ever had about buying in a sale.

Would you buy it at full price (assuming you had the money), or are you buying it because it's on sale?

If the answer is yes, I would definitely buy it at full price if I had the money, then knock yourself out. But if you don't think a Dyson Airwrap (for example) is.worth hundreds of pounds, then don't buy it.

Yes, please can someone talk me out of buying this blouse? I’ve managed to kick my wine habit. Now I need to tackle my shopping habit.

I looked and thought……ooo, I like that, maybe I’ll buy it!!!! Then noticed it was linen so it’s a complete no-no. Looks hideous after wearing for about 2 minutes, needs washed after even the shortest of wears due to creasing, murder to iron.

not for me!

Appalonia · 29/01/2026 10:43

Agree. A bargain is only a bargain if you would have paid full price for it!

Thankfully not, and I can see why you're completely deterred by the idea of navy cupboards now!

Marvellousmeadows · 29/01/2026 10:45

@SlothSpiritAnimal it’s hideous, looks so cheap and the sort of thing you would find in a lucky dip .

Happyjoe · 29/01/2026 10:37

I knew that I would upset someone!
Navy blue is ok if like that (I prefer more traditional units but fun tiles), but it's with dark green wall tiles and mottled grey floor tiles. It's very dark.

No, ours is with white tiles and a white Amtico floor. It would be much cheaper to replace those elements.

I googled. It looks a bit like you're dating a lumberjack, had a toilet accident at his house and put his shirt on backwards as a skirt to cover your shame.

It's also very clueless inspired which is almost over (sadly) as a trend and then you'll look like supergran (if you are unaware then Google image search and the skirt won't tempt you any longer)

It's dry clean only so a massive hassle and looks like it'll bobble to buggery if it goes near a washing machine.

Helpful?

Lol excellent review. I was just going to say it looks awful but you summed it up perfectly.

That's the nicest prison uniform I've seen since 1926.

TBH I could fancy that, except that it’s linen and would need endless ironing…

I was eyeing it up the other day, lovely for summer and my menopause but now I will think of it as prison uniform, lol.

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

No. Magnesium deficiency is rare if you have a balanced diet. Eat a banana.

I thought bananas were high in potassium not magnesium?

I have a moka pot and it's great - sorry! Better than my Nespresso and so much less waste, plus the coffee grounds are really good in my compost and I can take it camping if I'm ever forced to go.

If someone ever forced me to go camping, coffee would be the least of my worries and I would be prioritising stabby knives...

😧

Magnesium: if you have a serious deficiency tablets will give you digestive issues and sprays will burn. The body gets too excited by the sudden influx and can't cope with it. I know this from experience. If you don't notice any negative side effects, maybe you don't have a deficiency anyway? How would you know unless you have a blood test (I do regularly for other reasons).

If your magnesium is low, general (cheap) multivitamins that contain a small amount of magnesium are fine, and bath salts & body lotions with a small amount of magnesium help me sleep (probably as much for the lovely lavender etc fragrances as anything else).

That’s interesting what you said about the spray will burn. I purchased some to help restless legs and didn’t like the feeling of it on my legs and threw it away after a couple of applications. Wasn’t cheap either.

Everything I own from Community clothing has shrunk in the wash. I'd be terrified to wash it.

I definitely do not need another wool coat - I have 3, but i love this style and colour:

Unless you are as slender as the model, you risk looking like a sack of potatoes tied in the middle if you wear this with the belt.

BeaRightThere · 29/01/2026 11:07

I really like the idea of this thread OP but honestly it seems like people are just taking the opportunity to be shockingly rude about things other posters clearly like enough to be considering buying. Isn't it possible to dissuade from a purchase without being offensive?

FlyHighLikeABird · 29/01/2026 11:07

Collagen- it works ok for me (joint injury), but I rotate cheap supplements off Amazon depending on the reviews. It will not hold your face up, however much you wish.

Magnesium- worst nightmare of my life, don't go there!

All cardigans, chunky knits- wrong season, Spring is around the corner.

Kilt- even Claudia looks a little too Claudia these days.

Whowhatwerewolf · 29/01/2026 11:10

@WeAreNewHere That GLP-1 Colon Broom is an absolute scam designed to confuse people who have heard about actual real GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro and want to get in on the action. It's snake oil so please don't fall for it! This one actually makes me angry. It has nothing at all to do with GLP-1 it's pure marketing BS.
