De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

I love that card and would maybe buy it if it were hip length and I had a spare £150... But it's too short! It would look boxy on a normal human being.

Also, if you want a cardi that's warm and snuggly like that, you'd also want your hips and arse to be warm.

You can't reward that copywriter by buying that perfume. You must punish him or her for that copy!

God that is awful copy 😂

I agree it is fascinating! Some of the replies seem quite mean to me but people are loving it 😆

It's an antidote to the online Influencers (hell mend them) who are OMG ob-SESSED with this new wonder product and it's changed their liiiives and run don't walk to buy iiiit! 🤪

Why? Are you a fisherman? If you wear this you also need to haul around an old smelly net covered in rotting seaweed to accessorise with

This is what I needed to hear (read?) I didn't even register it was poly cotton, assumed it was cotton. 100% puts me off.

Also, the hem looks bad. Honestly, it genuinely looks cheap. Like Top Shop or something (am I showing my age??)

Can anyone talk me out of this bag? It's actually half price, I wouldn't pay full price for it.

My DM had a great rule of thumb that I try to remember for impulsive sale purchases - if you wouldn't be prepared to pay full price for it, then it's not a good buy. It (sometimes) works for me. While I'm on, please can people dissuade me from buying the GLP-1 Colon Broom stuff that I'm bombarded with on SM? I'm sure it'll have the same effect as the Dragons' Den rubbish that I spent £££ on last year!

It's a bit Kat Slater from Eastenders isn't it. "You ain't my mofer!" But if you are her mother, then go for it

wishingonastar101 · 29/01/2026 09:44

You're going to be tugging at it every time you sit down. Unless you have thighs like a 20 year old Kate moss - it's going to pull horizontally and the split will increase upwards... also, if you do sit down too forcefully the thread at the bottom of the split will rip and you'll have to get it professionally fixed.

Put me off buying this please! I saw a bargain one on vinted but it sold while I was dithering. I definitely can't justify it at full price but love the pink flecked colour.

100% it look like a £5 from the market bag.

I hate to tell you all this but I’ve seen that bag in the wild and it’s lovely. It was carried by a very stylish woman wearing all black and red lipstick. It looked amazing. Sorry.

It's gold-plated and will turn your neck green (and it's chavvy).

Awful, looks like a child made it...

It looks itchy as heck

YourWildAnt · 29/01/2026 09:50

A new kitchen. Current one is at least 10 years old as was here before the last owners were living here. Fair enough condition but just not how I would want it set out, to my taste.
Been quoted almost 3k just to have it sprayed.

Love the pink but...

Wool is so itchy, and it will probably shrink with the wool. You'll forget one day and wash it normally to find you have a childs jumper instead!

You see how the hem, neck and cuffs are rolling? That's what poorly made, cheap nasty clothes do after they're washed for the first time. This is designed to look like that.

Magnesium: if you have a serious deficiency tablets will give you digestive issues and sprays will burn. The body gets too excited by the sudden influx and can't cope with it. I know this from experience. If you don't notice any negative side effects, maybe you don't have a deficiency anyway? How would you know unless you have a blood test (I do regularly for other reasons).

If your magnesium is low, general (cheap) multivitamins that contain a small amount of magnesium are fine, and bath salts & body lotions with a small amount of magnesium help me sleep (probably as much for the lovely lavender etc fragrances as anything else).

Save up...
Sorry, but after a lifetime of kitchens so far removed to what I'd like - and about to move into another house with a newish but yuck kitchen, I say save up and go for it. That's what I am going to do once we've fixed everything else in the house..

I know, should be talking you out of it but the kitchen is the hub of the home!

Quite easy to OD on magnesium if you take supplements and already get plenty in your diet. And that's v dangerous, apparently.

This is worrying, what sort of levels?

Geronimode · 29/01/2026 09:55

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 22:11

Thanks. I might need to look at sprays. I am a bit sceptical about how much you would absorb from a spray though.

Sprays are amazing. Magnesium was recommend to me for breastfeeding aversion and it worked like a charm - I think sprays are easier to absorb. The breastfeeding group advice was to spray on the backs of your knees.

Thanks for this. I do believe it is key but it's people around me telling me not to bother. Our house is lovely and a great price but it was on the market for so long that I genuinely believe the only reason could have been the kitchen.
I will bear your suggestions in mind!

I really want to blow a large part of my kitchen budget on a fancy tap that does boiling water AND sparkling water.

Yep , get the Quooker tap , it’s worth it ( even DH agrees with me on this )
we have the hot water one , and a SodaStream
