Closed toe summer shoes

So I have summer dresses (mostly midi) that I started wearing last summer but I am struggling with shoes to wear with them. I don’t wear open toed shoes and need a shoe that covers about an inch above the toes (so ballet flats don’t work). I’m happy to wear with a trainer at times but was hoping for a more summery look

last year I had menorcan sandals but they are a bit too flat - my calves are fat so I need a bit more heel or a shoe that makes my leg look longer! espadrilles don’t work because of the straps up the leg

Try Begg Shoes. You can do a search on there for closed toe sandals. They're in Scotland but they do online orders.

Tan espadrilles here that look super-comfy & with a cork lining? I like the beige & tan together for summer - lighter than one colour. I don't consider these to be an ankle strap - the strap sits on the foot itself so your ankles won't be cut across/obscured.

I have these in a different colour, and the strap is lower down as you say. I find them comfortable.

Oh, is it just that you hate open-toed sandals? I'd just assumed it was because you had damaged toenails or something that meant you preferred to keep your toenails covered!

is a dislike/hatred/phobia of open toes a thing?!

I did buy myself a lovely pair of hush puppies open- toe sandals a few years ago. I realised I only wore them about once a year, so decided I didn’t really need them.

i can’t really pinpoint why I prefer closed-toe - no phobias or feet deformity. Think I just don’t like my toes showing!

AlbieJiggered · 29/01/2026 11:52

@Silverbirchleaf , same here. I wear socks to bed because I don't like bare feet. Any sandals I have do not show toenails.

Me too! I hate being barefoot!

I don't like seeing other people's toenails either, unless they are perfect like a baby's.

Bruisername · 29/01/2026 12:33

Kind of going off topic into support group territory

but it’s the way toes move when someone walks that turns my stomach!

I accept I’m a weirdo though!!

What about something like these? I know you said you're not keen on fisherman sandals but these are more delicate/less utilitarian. Metallic goes with everything. My preference is soft golds but silver would also work with your palette of black/green/blue.

https://christinachristi.com/shoes/leather-sandals/women-sandals/closed-toe-sandals-gold-en/

Yeah I agree - I think you should look for a variation of fishermen’s that you’d be happy with. I really think they can’t be beaten for coverage and comfort while still looking summery.

Or mesh sandals?

AlbieJiggered · 29/01/2026 14:20

I don't look at toes for that long, @Bruisername. I only look at mine when I have to.

Gooseyloopey · 29/01/2026 14:27

Following this with interest. About 20 years ago I had the perfect summer shoe. Low heel but not flat, cream coloured, round toe, cut away sides and an ankle strap. Really comfortable but flattering. Kept them til they fell apart. They are my holy grail of summer shoe. I search and search on line and in shops but have never found any to match

I think you - & several others who've commented - need to form a support group thread for all you strange toe haters out there ... 😁!!!

I didn't know it was such a thing, & have learnt something new ... that & the word "podophobia"!!!

TimeforaGandT · 29/01/2026 14:35

What about these wedge Menorca sandals:

EleanorMc67 · 29/01/2026 16:23

OP - another loafer option in the Penelope Chilvers sale - backless so good for summer, while still keeping the foot covered (for all you strange people who don't like looking at your own toes or anyone else's!!! 😁).

Good with quite clean minimal shirt dresses etc I think?

@user675895 are Swedish hasbeens good fit wise, or do you need to size up/down? I love the look of some of their styles.
Thanks.

So the jigsaw ones are lovely and are really comfy but the straps cut too high and make my ankles look weird. As my ankles are a good bit of me that’s a shame! So sending back and might try the Jones ones

That's a shame. Have you decided what colour of espadrille you'd prefer?

EleanorMc67 · 30/01/2026 15:30

I did spot these Hobbs ones in a gorgeous shade of pink & also navy. I don't think navy goes with black though when it's in isolation - I think you need to have a few elements of each in your outfit to make it look considered.

I really like the green Brora or the green Jones but have 2 dresses similar colour

I might try the jones one but not sure I’ll be able to walk without more support on the foot - and they are a bit PoW

It's a difficult one with espadrilles isn't it - they can teeter on frumpy - & I suppose they're more classic than "in" most of the time.

And then there are are certain "old-lady" shoe styles that come back into fashion on loop (as does everything eventually) which I then look at in horror having worn (or hated!!!) first time around ...!!

I see two-tone shoes are apparently back this year ... 🤢

Was it this style? I can't cope with just a slingback. The strap always stretches with wear & flops down at the back.

I have both clothes & footwear in that clear emerald (?) green shade. I don't wear them together but I do wear the (Jigsaw Portland) trainers with denim (dresses/skirts/jeans), navy, black, white ... I love them so much I've just bought them in red too 😁

If you love green in espadrilles, get a pair! Wear them with other colours. They'll make you happy!
