Help me not look like the frumpy chaperone on a hen do

I’m 40 and going on a hen weekend for a lovely 25‑year‑old colleague. She and her friends are very Instagram — tiny, polished, lip fillers/Botox, PLT, ultra mini dresses etc. I’m much more earth‑mother, low‑maintenance, and feeling slightly worried I’m going to look like the sensible aunt who’s come to supervise.

It’s a full weekend away and I’d like to look like I’ve made an effort without veering into mutton‑as‑lamb territory. Theme is pink cowgirls, but black with pink accessories is allowed, which is much more my comfort zone.

A few details in case it helps with suggestions:

  • I’m 5'10, size 14 bottom / 12 top, pear‑shaped
  • Prefer midi length and v‑necks
  • No mini dresses, no polyester
  • Don’t mind sleeveless but would probably wear a cardigan without sleeves. Ideally would be wing sleeves or straps with a cardi.
  • My favourite place to shop is Boden, mainly because of the fabrics and pockets, but I’m not wedded to the style

Looking for something fun and on‑theme that won’t make me look like I’ve wandered in from a PTA meeting. Ideally something I can rewear afterwards too.

Have a shampoo and set the day before and wear a nice tea dress or a two piece.

Do you want me to even try to answer since I had to Google what a hen weekend was ? 🤣

Cowboy boots! You’ll pick up a fun pair on Vinted for a few quid, or a pair of metallic ones are a good staple if you want to buy some
Jeans in a current shape- dark denim also is on trend. So a barrel leg, horseshoe shape, wide leg
A skims material slinky top - black
A nice pendant, nice hoops

Are you all wearing pink cowboy hats?

Probably not! I’m in northern England and that’s just what we call it. I’m assuming you’re not in the UK.

Just have fun.. you won't look like the sensible aunt if your on the bar doing tequila shots...

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 16/01/2026 15:27

Amazon has a bright pink cowboy shirt with a bit of rhinestone bling fringing .... which would be great with jeans and boots.
https://amzn.eu/d/a5NlQVS

Also some fringed waistcoats on there and lots of cowboy accessories around at the moment too x

I like your thinking.

RonnSeall · 16/01/2026 15:32

I am exactly your height and dress sizes OP and I can confirm that horseshoe jeans look absolutely terrible on me 😂 I don’t think it’s a trend we need to be engaging with!

love the idea of pink cowboy shirt and boots with jeans!

Christ those jeans are very strange. Bring back skinny jeans I say.! Good luck.

AltitudeCheck · 16/01/2026 15:36

Jeans, checked shirt with a bit of pink in it (tied at the waist), ankle/ cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Fringed suede jacket (fringed clothes are making a come back!)... denim jacket or waistcoat would also work.

I am 💯 skinny jeans before now apart from the hipster/flares in my teens! I'm kind of glad that's coming back in as it's a very forgiving style.

Not sure I'm quite that old! But I DEFINITELY can't get away with the stuff at PYT 🥴

A jumpsuit? Something with fringe detail? Even some stud details? I am also team getting something you could wear again! 😂

OxfordshireMumOf2 · 16/01/2026 15:39

black wide leg or skinny jeans if thats what you are more comfy in
black bodysuit top
pink tassel vest- you will find these on Shein for cheap!

or pink wide leg trousers, top and denim jacket

or a pink gingham dress, i'm sure New Look/Nobodys Child had these sort of styles in last year in midi length

cow boy boys with whatever outfit you wear, then accessorise with neck tie scarf and cowgirl hat

Icannotremembermyusername · 16/01/2026 15:42

I think you are really lucky being 5'10" as you will look great in jeans! I would look at these Next wide leg black jeans (with stretch so super comfortable) https://www.next.co.uk/style/su520189/au1969 with trainers (cowboy boots are fun but might be uncomfortable) in pink or silver or black. Then a pink western style shirt knotted at the waist like this one https://www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/clothing/women/blouses-shirts/doreen-utility-shirt/p/A74670036

Then I would wear a cami underneath and open a few buttons. If you wear a knotted hankie/scarf at your neck or a cowboy hat - you are good to go!

That is wear I would be leaning towards as a 40 something and about your size. Good luck

I was only joking because you used 'mutton dressed as lamb' which seemed dated, ageist and sexist in the 1980s!

I'd wear straight or skinny dark indigo or black jeans, black or pink top, boots.

I'd not try to look younger or trendy, just clean and at my best.

There is no way I'd wear horseshoe jeans. I see women wearing them and they look ok on the young and slim but they'll probably look back and cringe.

Ah okay, I really didn't get that as I wasn't calling anyone it, and would never - I was describing my own comfort level. Not wanting to wear something that's way too young for me. Hope that makes sense.

I'm definitely going in for some nice black jeans and keeping it simple and clean 💯❤️
