Help me not look like the frumpy chaperone on a hen do

I’m 40 and going on a hen weekend for a lovely 25‑year‑old colleague. She and her friends are very Instagram — tiny, polished, lip fillers/Botox, PLT, ultra mini dresses etc. I’m much more earth‑mother, low‑maintenance, and feeling slightly worried I’m going to look like the sensible aunt who’s come to supervise.

It’s a full weekend away and I’d like to look like I’ve made an effort without veering into mutton‑as‑lamb territory. Theme is pink cowgirls, but black with pink accessories is allowed, which is much more my comfort zone.

A few details in case it helps with suggestions:

  • I’m 5'10, size 14 bottom / 12 top, pear‑shaped
  • Prefer midi length and v‑necks
  • No mini dresses, no polyester
  • Don’t mind sleeveless but would probably wear a cardigan without sleeves. Ideally would be wing sleeves or straps with a cardi.
  • My favourite place to shop is Boden, mainly because of the fabrics and pockets, but I’m not wedded to the style

Looking for something fun and on‑theme that won’t make me look like I’ve wandered in from a PTA meeting. Ideally something I can rewear afterwards too.

Black, wide leg, v neck jumpsuit, with some funky pink accessories. Whistles, Turtledove, Jigsaw have some in cotton / natural fabrics.

Thanks! I never wear jumpsuits because of my height and the ones I've tried all give me camel toe 😂 however I will check out these sites in case they have tall ones. I've never shopped at any of them before so thanks for the recommendations.

@GloriaMonday ‘I was only joking because you used 'mutton dressed as lamb' which seemed dated, ageist and sexist in the 1980s!’

Someone else got ‘offended’ by this statement the other day on style and beauty. I can’t understand why. It’s simply a way of saying a person wants to wear something age appropriate. What’s wrong with that?

Vodkamartini3olives · 16/01/2026 17:19

Jesus Christ woman you're 40 not 80!.
I've been to a few Western themed parties. Pink cowgirl is always going to look somewhat tacky. I would go for black wide leg jeans or flares, fitted black denim shirt. Neckerchief and cowboy hat ( both black with pink trim)..

Because it's only used to describe women and uses meat to do so.

mutton dressed as lamb
(UK, derogatory) A middle-aged or elderly woman dressed in a style more suited to a young woman, especially if in a deliberate attempt to appear young.

Christmaseree · 16/01/2026 17:40

I’d go for a decent pair of jeans that suit you, and a ‘suede’ western style waistcoat with tassels that are sold on Amazon/Shein and a pink top you are comfortable with underneath.

I went to a country and western themed Christmas party last month and wore my usual party dress with the tasseled waistcoat over the top and cowboy hat that matched my dress. I didn’t bother with boots due to comport and cost and I received lots of compliments.
I also think booking a blow dry for that morning is a good idea.

Cappie73 · 16/01/2026 17:40

I use ChatGPT when I’m planning outfits!
What about a black jumpsuit when going out in the evening and accessorise with the pink?

Cappie73 · 16/01/2026 17:42

Ignore that I’ve just saw somebody else suggested a jumpsuit. The fringe top would look fantastic.

Sorry I can't help but 😁😆at frumpy chaperone - I'm sure you'll look lovely OP. The theme sounds fun.

I think calling someone that would definitely be sexist, but using the phrase about myself isn’t the same thing.

Context and intent matter. Focusing on the wording rather than what someone actually means doesn’t really help us make the world any less sexist.

Edited

Yep, ‘a middle‑aged woman wearing something more suited to someone younger’ was exactly what I meant 😂

I’ll use the full essay description next time. And maybe I'll start trotting out the phrase "gammon dressed as ham" to keep things more balanced.

Horseshoe, are these for real. I don't think I'm ready for these fashion trends 😂

I'm in my 50s and love barrel leg jeans.

GloriaMonday · 16/01/2026 18:34

Try 'old nag pretending to be a filly' or 'a cull pretending to be a heifer'.

anon2022anon · 16/01/2026 18:37

Fringing is very in this year, so if you add a bit of that in you're going to look like a trendsetter! I've seen a couple of fringed jackets reduced in TK Maxx if that's not too warm.

I don't think I'd go for black jeans, I'd go for faded denim straight leg- think classic cowboy style. Cowboy boots, these kids silver ones go up to a size 7 at Next silver boots
And a black shirt with fringing

Cappie73 · 16/01/2026 18:40

And of course look on Vinted and in charity shops, especially if the style isn’t something you’re not likely to wear again

DoorOpening · 16/01/2026 18:42

Boot cut jeans with a sparkly belt, cowboy boots, shiny hair, lip gloss. Go a bit noughties.

Woodfiresareamazing · 16/01/2026 18:51

Vintage shops are your friend - look for cowboy boots (a classic item, so can be reworn), fringed waistcoats/bags/belts etc.
Skinny jeans tucked into boots.
Shirt tied at the waist.
And of course the cowboy hat.
Have fun!

Eggonaleaf · 16/01/2026 19:02

I’m probably a similar shape to you and I’d consider an asymmetrical dress off one shoulder for a flattering, dressy option xxx

NotTheMrMenAgain · 16/01/2026 19:16

Honestly OP, I wouldn’t worry too much and how lovely to be invited 🥰. How about a long, vintage style hippie type cotton skirt in black - would look great with cowboy boots or suede ankle boots, if you don’t want to go the whole-cowboy-boot-hog.

You’ve already said you’ll all have pink cowboy hats, so just wear any nice black thing that you like and have the hat, a pink bandana and perhaps a Sherrif badge? If you plan to wear a shirt with a collar then get a cheap, Western bolo tie? A waistcoat with a fringe, as other people have suggested, is a good shout - but perhaps not worth the effort if you’ll never otherwise wear it.

You described yourself as more of an ‘Earth mother’ style, so go for bo-ho western and you could pretty much get away with anything with a 70’s vibe, I reckon. In any event, you’ll hopefully have a great time and after a couple of drinks it tends not to matter much about the outfits!

Overtheatlantic · 16/01/2026 19:29

To answer a PP a hen party is called a bridal shower in the U.S. and maybe Canada, so not everyone automatically knows what one is.

ThisTaupeZebra · 16/01/2026 19:50

'but would probably wear a cardigan without sleeves'

Sorry OP, but I don't think a knitted vest/gillet is going to help here!

I echo the comments about black jeans, cowboy boots, fringed jacket over a pink T-shirt, and put the effort into hair and make-up.

Tiddlywinky · 16/01/2026 19:51

I'd probably go for something like this with cuban style boots
