Help me not look like the frumpy chaperone on a hen do

I’m 40 and going on a hen weekend for a lovely 25‑year‑old colleague. She and her friends are very Instagram — tiny, polished, lip fillers/Botox, PLT, ultra mini dresses etc. I’m much more earth‑mother, low‑maintenance, and feeling slightly worried I’m going to look like the sensible aunt who’s come to supervise.

It’s a full weekend away and I’d like to look like I’ve made an effort without veering into mutton‑as‑lamb territory. Theme is pink cowgirls, but black with pink accessories is allowed, which is much more my comfort zone.

A few details in case it helps with suggestions:

  • I’m 5'10, size 14 bottom / 12 top, pear‑shaped
  • Prefer midi length and v‑necks
  • No mini dresses, no polyester
  • Don’t mind sleeveless but would probably wear a cardigan without sleeves. Ideally would be wing sleeves or straps with a cardi.
  • My favourite place to shop is Boden, mainly because of the fabrics and pockets, but I’m not wedded to the style

Looking for something fun and on‑theme that won’t make me look like I’ve wandered in from a PTA meeting. Ideally something I can rewear afterwards too.

To answer a PP a hen party is called a bridal shower in the U.S. and maybe Canada, so not everyone automatically knows what one is.
Fair enough but Google is available to everyone.

Focusing on the wording rather than what someone actually means doesn’t really help us make the world any less sexist.
By that logic, you could say it was ok to use racist terms on the grounds that not using them doesn’t really help us make the world any less racist.

It's not ok.

I love long tall Sally myself.

The dresses are well priced and beautiful. https://www.longtallsally.com/dresses/occasion-dresses

If I was you, I'd get my hair done.

Have a mani and pedi with a pretty pink glittery colour.

And I'd book in for make up review at a concession so I get ideas about current trends etc.

You will be fabulous.

Enjoy it.

Yes @Fartly you’re tall, fab jeans/cowboy hoops and pink hat/cowgirl waistcoat or something. You can also get cowboy boot ‘bubble blowing’ liquid! Your height means you’ll look willowy …

If I was you I’d do a black Denim Jumpsuit with cowboy boots/hat.

Just to be clear: racist language is never okay.

My point was that intent and context matter when you’re talking about non‑racist phrases like the one I used about myself.

It’s a big jump to accuse me of thinking racism is fine — especially when you know nothing about me or my race. What a clumsy straw-man/straw-person argument.

I think chaperones might make a come-back...

Wear whatever your favourite version of a plain black outfit is plus a cowboy hat and coordinating bandana. You don’t need full on fancy dress unless that’s what you prefer.

And using a misogynistic and ageist term about oneself doesn’t make it any less misogynistic or ageist. Of course you have every right to use it, but sometimes we can be our own worst enemies.

Jumpsuits are tricky to be in and out of and cold when you need the loo!
I'd go to M&S and try on some jeans you will wear again - they have lots of on trend styles and you can order different lengths in different colours.
I second a dress too - there's some great ones out there that would be a bit 'saloon' and look on trend.
No cardigan at all.
Oversized shirt if you need a cover up.
Metallic cowboy boots would be great - even with tights and a cord mini if it's something you already have.
Be you, don't worry. They want you to go!
