Knitted vests over ditsy tops?

Im looking to get more wear out of my clothes by wearing vests on top. Is this quite a dated look? I cant seem to find anything v necked/not short and should be fitted. Any tips?

Not sure what size you are but there was some on cotton traders

SpiralSister · 16/01/2026 10:19

I’ve got a nice v neck Seasalt one from Vinted - have you had a look there?

worried2626 · 16/01/2026 10:23

What is a ditsy blouse, please?

2026IsMyYear · 16/01/2026 10:24

@Eesha me+em have loads of them plus great for styling inspiration

I'm conremplating one myself.

I have a colleague who wears them regularly & looks great. She wears fair isle ones with plain blouses under

I think i would go the opposite, i'd love a plain burgundy, bottle green or navy one with dark coloured patterned shirt beneath.

Eesha · 16/01/2026 11:13

@2026IsMyYear unfortunately they are only in black

@Eesha have a look at the more traditional country clothing sites.
I have 3 of these slipovers. They are good quality and wash well. Look great with pretty blouses and wide leg jeans ( my everyday uniform 😀)

or search knitted vests on their website. It brings up lots of different styles and colours

I’m sort of regretting ebaying mine now!

I'm reading just to find out too!

faffadoodledo · 16/01/2026 13:24

In my mind ditsy is a pattern involving tiny little flowers. The first time I saw it used was by Boden about a decade ago

Are you saying me+em only have black? I saw loads on there this morning in all sorts of colours.....

Jrisix · 16/01/2026 13:37

I wear them over a plain good quality T shirt, a close fitting turtleneck or a collared shirt. I have a Merino one with cables that I knitted and it's surprisingly warm even with arms uncovered. I also have one made of sweatshirt material from Cos. They are feeling a bit 2021 to me now though... Maybe a waistcoat style is more current.

The v-neck is only in black. The others are very high round necks.

Any v neck suggestions, or scoop neck? That was my original post!

How about men's ones? M&S usually do v necked ones, in merino or cotton. Vinted is a good place to look.

limetrees32 · 16/01/2026 16:24

@Oriunda brilliant suggestion to look at menswear.
Hope the fit accommodates the bust though.

I got this in primark the other day and plan to wear it over a buttoned shirt with smart trousers. Love the look.

I've also been looking for something like this in black/grey/dark brown but haven't been able to find anything. I'd like to to wear over some long sleeved tight stretchy tops I have that I love but are too tight (well, I'm too plump!) to wear on their own, so will hide my stomach area! Something short sleeved, it can be cowl, v or round neck and down to cover my bum.

Mum18282 · 16/01/2026 16:49

I love them! They give warmth without too much added bulk under coats. A fleece gilet is practically my uniform at home and outside.

I would also do a search for knitted waistcoats and gilets.

Mum18282 · 16/01/2026 16:52

I started wearing them a year ago - they remind me of early Chandler and his sweater vests. 😁 Brora have some lovely ones.

So I tried one today and couldn't shake the feeling that I looked like an elderly librarian. This was with a red v neck vest, ditsy red long sleeves under. Im now wondering whether this look can work at all or if too dated on me.

I'm think there's a whole thread on here devoted to them elderly librarian look.
Don't think it's called that but my point is that there's nothing wrong with such a look.
