Im looking to get more wear out of my clothes by wearing vests on top. Is this quite a dated look? I cant seem to find anything v necked/not short and should be fitted. Any tips?

I love a tank top they make your clothes go a lot further. I have this one. Its so versatile and goes with everything. I bought a size smaller than my actual size as they come up big. I wear it a lot. Sorry not V neck.

I bought something similar on Vinted recently and wear it to death now over long sleeved teeshirts/thermal tops. Love the extra warmth it provides.

Why shouldn't she mention being in France? No need to be nasty.

That is a great use of the word bummed and I enjoyed it very much. I for one agree that neutrals, ‘camel’ (🤢) and roll necks can’t be for everyone.

LaMarschallin · 15/01/2026 10:11

because for some reason on this website the French are bummed above all others?

What now?
Is this more new slang I should know?

Sourisblanche · 15/01/2026 10:27

I have a bright pink tank top that I wear over a white top. Lovely for spring I think. It’s from NRBY, they currently have a lovely v-neck one in pink and blue on JL, but it’s cashmere so a bit £££. However I’m quite tempted, love a tank top!

I took it that the OP mentioned she was in France because she couldn't recommend any particular UK brands but that they are very popular there. Nothing more.

@Owly11 I like them for spring and autumn, rather than the depths of winter, but I had a close fitting one from M&S a few years ago which was extremely warm and cosy compared to looser fitting ones. I don't like working in a blazer either.

lindyloo57 · 15/01/2026 11:00

I have a burgundy v neck one with wool , that I brought in the next clearance, I don't know what to wear under it, I suppose a black roll neck with jeans, I don't own anything else in burgundy thats ware I struggle.

bridgetreilly · 15/01/2026 12:35

I love a v-neck tank top, but I’ve found it hard to find recently. They do mostly seem to be round neck.

Owly11 · 15/01/2026 06:31

I love tank tops but what do you wear over them? I don't wear jackets and if you wear a jumper over the top the tank top can't be seen and makes you look bulky and it is very hard to find a cardigan to wear over a tank top. And it is obviously too cold just to wear a tank top in winter, and in summer you don't need it. So although I love them I never find a way to wear them.

Why is it hard to wear a cardigan over a tank top?

Also, I quite often wear my Turtle Dove fingerless gloves indoors.

SirChenjins · 15/01/2026 12:41

I wear tank tops often (and usually with a patterned blouse or dress under it - none of your boring French neutrals Wink) and wide legged tousers. I wear a thermal or thin merino wool jumper under my blouse/dress if I'm cold.

Christwosheds · 15/01/2026 12:55

OP do you actually mean a vest or do you mean a tank top or a waistcoat ?

ImSweetEnough · 15/01/2026 13:01

I have a couple of wool vests and tank tops that I wear over blouses and shirts, including 'ditsy' print blouses. I have one that it's very 1940's in style from Joanie which I love.

Couldn't care less whether it's a problem or whether or not it's acceptable in France (and I am pretty sure that it is, actually!)

Vests, tank tops and sleeveless jumpers are very in fashion at the moment.

It's not hard to do but it's hard to make it look nice. It always looks bulky and ugly. What kind of cardigan would you put with a tank top?

GreyBeeplus3 · 15/01/2026 13:18

Have you tried New Look or ASOS?
Both can do nice knits but be prepared fo having to have a good wade through especially with ASOS!

I have generally done it without thinking much about it, but I guess one of a similar length and weight to the tank top. Like a twinset but not matching.

Schoolstressed · 15/01/2026 13:57

I have a few and I wear bodysuits under them.

Eesha · 15/01/2026 14:01

Definitely the ditsy blouse is an issue. I’m in France, and the shops are awash with knitted tanks and vests, all in chic neutrals like camel and black. I have neutrals in camel, which go great with a black shirt or roll neck underneath, plus a couple of vintage ones in brighter hues. So versatile, and great for extending wear of said tops into winter and then back out into spring.

Coming home on Eurostar from France I was sitting near a woman wearing a lovely 'tank' top. She looked great, I didn't realise they were currently the thing in France. When I got home next shopping trip I went in search of something similar. I got a very nice cream semi-fitted one in Primark. Cheap and cheerful and still my favourite despite having bought a couple more. Amazon and TK Maxx, both V neck.

Bravo. Thank you. Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. Monoprix (French equivalent M&S/John Lewis) is awash with knitted tanks, as are the vintage shops. Also very popular are the knitted polo neck tabards; open at the sides, tied with knitted straps, with a roll neck collar. Great for layering; I got mine from C&A (which is equivalent of Primark here).

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/01/2026 15:26

I think it looks chic on French women, but can't do it as my 79 year old dad is very fond of a check shirt with a M&S lambs wool v neck tank top on top.

Ooh la la!!

Have a bite of a pan au chocolat and lighten up.

PigletJohn · 15/01/2026 15:48

What does "ditsy " mean?

I've see it used to describe some Liberty ties.

SirChenjins · 15/01/2026 15:55

From Google - A ditsy print is a small-scale, randomly scattered pattern on fabric, often featuring tiny florals, dots, or abstract shapes that appear non-directional and can even look like a solid color from afar. Characterized by its delicate, whimsical, and non-linear design, ditsy prints are popular in fashion (dresses, blouses) and interiors (wallpaper, quilting) for adding subtle charm.
