Knitted vests over ditsy tops?

Im looking to get more wear out of my clothes by wearing vests on top. Is this quite a dated look? I cant seem to find anything v necked/not short and should be fitted. Any tips?

Maybe search "v neck women's tank top", might get you more hits. That's the British English term for what I think you mean?

It’s the ditsy blouse that’s the problem…..

Mmmkaay · 14/01/2026 23:31

I've got a few - sainsburys of all places gave some nice ones this year! They do definitely expand your wardrobe, I quite like finding good combinations. This week I've worn a grey/brown argyle style one with a blue pinstripe shirt underneath which looked good (I thought!)

Its lovely! Though I think a vest would work!

Yes, though I think a button-front one might prove more versatile. So a sleeveless cardigan or jacket, basically!

It's absurdly hard to find photos illustrating my thoughts - no matter how I changed my wording, Google kept giving me floral patterned vest tops. Anyway ... this sort of idea, but with a ditsy shirt and perhaps not this fabric.

I’ve seen a lot recently that have tie up fronts. Kind of a boho look.

NewYearNewHope · 15/01/2026 02:12

Maybe search under waistcoat for women, or knitted waistcoat for women?

Oriunda · 15/01/2026 02:29

Definitely the ditsy blouse is an issue. I’m in France, and the shops are awash with knitted tanks and vests, all in chic neutrals like camel and black. I have neutrals in camel, which go great with a black shirt or roll neck underneath, plus a couple of vintage ones in brighter hues. So versatile, and great for extending wear of said tops into winter and then back out into spring.

coolcahuna · 15/01/2026 06:11

I've got a few. Plain v neck and also the type with buttons down. I've worn them loads. Not sure what type of top you mean under but both mine are plain so worn my normal patterned blouses under.

I love tank tops but what do you wear over them? I don't wear jackets and if you wear a jumper over the top the tank top can't be seen and makes you look bulky and it is very hard to find a cardigan to wear over a tank top. And it is obviously too cold just to wear a tank top in winter, and in summer you don't need it. So although I love them I never find a way to wear them.

Wow. Triggered much? All I was saying was that in France, the sleeveless vest/tank tops are a thing, and how versatile they are. So agreeing with the OP (ditsy blouse aside).

Goodness me, the level of aggression on this site is disturbing. Style and beauty used to be one of the nicest places on this site.

Well, a jacket, or a coat. Intrigued that you don’t wear them!

Or are you thinking of indoors and not being warm enough without woolly sleeves? I wear mine with a long sleeved shirt, and crucially if cold and it’s a thinner vest, a camisole underneath.

Yes I am thinking of indoors- I always need a warm jumper and don't like wearing suit jackets when working. I wouldn't be warm enough with just a camisole or even thermal vest and a shirt and tank top. Maybe I just have to give up the idea!

OllyBJolly · 15/01/2026 09:14

I'm on the look out for a darkish royal blue tank with a deep V neck to match some gorgeous cords I got from Me + Em if anyone sees one.

Not looking for a buttoned one although quite tempted by the Lily tank posted by @Footyfandango

Calypsocuckoo · 15/01/2026 09:19

I love this look, and I have a few different ones, they look good over some midi dresses as well as over blouses of long sleeved tops. Good if you are in a warm ish office and don’t want to wear a long sleeved jumper.
Joules have lots including v necks. I went to the outlet shop at Street and they had loads in there, 2 for £40 I think.

limetrees32 · 15/01/2026 09:30

@Owly11 there are plenty of long sleeved base layer thermal tops.
Uniqlo for example

I'm sorry you read my comment as aggressive, it wasn't. Just an observation.

it did come across as you being pissed off @HoseGoblinmaybe calm your jets.

the poster was just on about the fashion shes seen. she happens to be in france. it’s no big deal.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/01/2026 09:53

I tend to extend the wear of blouses, light jumpers and dresses by wearing a thin, long sleeved thermal underlayer.
