Knitted vests over ditsy tops?

Eesha · 14/01/2026 23:09

Im looking to get more wear out of my clothes by wearing vests on top. Is this quite a dated look? I cant seem to find anything v necked/not short and should be fitted. Any tips?

Thanks!

So a packed tiny floral, fruits or dots one can be as orientation can be random

But an animals or birds one, not unless some of them can be upside down.

"Why is you being in France relevant? Did the OP ask about French fashion, or did you just want to shoehorn in the fact that you're in France because for some reason on this website the French are bummed above all others?"

What does "bummed above all others" mean?

It sounds rather unpleasant.

Love it. I think all sleeveless knits look great over a patterned or plan shirt! I actually prefer them without buttons up the front, it’s a much more modern look. Also crop knitted tanks that tie up at the sides! Also crochet ones.. you can do a really nice artsy or chic look depending on how colourful or plain you like! xo

I have generally done it without thinking much about it, but I guess one of a similar length and weight to the tank top. Like a twinset but not matching.

Yeah that's what I do if I do it but it doesn't look the best. Maybe I am just the wrong shape for it. I look good in just the tank top but weirdly not with the cardigan on top. Whereas it looks good with a suit jacket but I don't like wearing those.

Brogues · 15/01/2026 18:40

Absolutely you can. I wore this exact combo the other day. Top tip - wear a thin vest top under the sweater top if it is fine knit so you don’t see the buttons poking up.

Angelic999 · 15/01/2026 18:45

Only on Mumsnet could there be an argument within the first few posts because another poster dared to mention being in France! Poor OP only wanted a bit of fashion advice! 😆Honestly you can't say anything without being jumped on.

I don't understand this. If it's cold, your arms will be cold, even more so than your core.

You can wear a thin merino jumper or thermal top under your blouse

And what? Your arms are still colder than the rest of your upper half. It makes no sense.

No help whatever to the OP - just here to agree about the arms thing.

I dream of a cord mini pinafore dress. Teal, bottle green or grey. Comes two thirds of the way down my thigh, has two front pockets, comes in at the waist but doesn't have a waist band as such. Nice thick cord, rather than the thin kind. I'd look cracking. But no matter how 'technical' my top, in my dreams I always have cold arms.

And putting a cardi on over it would just make the whole effort pointless - why not just wear a jumper dress?

Good luck in your search OP, and I hope your arms don't hold it against you if you find the right tank top.

pollymere · 15/01/2026 23:55

I think sleeveless tunic might be a better description.

Same principle as a gilet but less bulky..
Depends on your internal thermostat and comfort levels I guess. And it looks great.

Its not for you, fine, no need to get itchy about it.

OllyBJolly · 16/01/2026 07:03

I think they're great for work in the colder months. I do a lot of presentations and find jumpers and cardis too warm, and suit jackets too formal. A nice tank that matches trousers can be very flattering and still keep me warm enough without overheating.

Goodness me, the level of aggression on this site is disturbing. Style and beauty used to be one of the nicest places on this site.

S&B has always been nice IF you follow current fashion and nod along with the masses. Dare to go slightly off piste and you'll see, oh the vitriol and name calling.

APatternGrammar · 16/01/2026 07:52

People might be surprised how warm something sleeveless can keep you in spring/autumn. My sister-in-law gave me a sleeveless cardigan for my birthday and, as I feel the cold, it didn’t appeal, but honestly, it makes a big difference having a warm torso. Obviously wouldn’t work in the depths of winter, but it’s much warmer than I imagined.

faffadoodledo · 16/01/2026 09:14

I thanked the lord that tank tops came back into fashion (first time since the 70s?) when I hit menopause. Been wearing them religiously for the past 7 years! So much better temperature control! I have loads and wear them over bretons, base layers and (horror) a ditsy blouse.

I'm in Cornwall and tanks are a firm favourite with the Cornish Core crowd who love a beanie and workboot too.

Me neither - surely your arms are usually colder than your core? I quite like the look but could not work out the practicalities of being too hot in the body with cold arms.

Any v neck suggestions, or scoop neck? That was my original post!

Would you be interested in buying a handknit one? It will cost more but you can agree with the maker exactly what you’re after and wear it in the knowledge it was ethically made?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/01/2026 10:02

i did have over 10 years ago 2 merino wool tank tops from Jigsaw in navy blue and forest green. I wore them to work as an EA in central government (high level) with my TM Lewin shirts because I felt that cardigans wouldn’t look right. I wouldn’t have worn them by themselves or over a ditsy top because re the latter not sure ditsy tops were in them and I’m also quite booby so they’d look silly worn by themselves.

Am tempted to try this trend this time around though with a ditsy top or not.
