Smartish trainers for 40 something year old

I'm in my 40s and have never really been bothered about clothes etc. As long as they are practical they will do. But I want to start dressing more stylishly. I have started with a pair of Boden girlfriend jeans to replace my many pairs of skinny jeans. Wide legged jeans looked awful on me. But the only footwear I have is some very battered converse and my running trainers. I would like some smart trainers to go with the jeans. I have an upcoming spa weekend in Harrogate and would like to feel nice and smart but comfy. Any ideas?

I like the Nike Field General range. Some of them are all one colour so the logo is camouflaged. (I'm not overly keen on logos).

I wear the adidas court for women. Like in this listing. I have a few different colours.

I like Hoff trainers, but classic Adidas gazelles or perhaps Kurt Geiger trainers?

Loafers.

Yes to Adidas courts and also a fan of Adidas Campus as well I have them in black with a set of black laces as white and it really can change up the look which is great.

Adidas Samba OG rage are popular in my friendships group. I got these recently to go with my dark green, burgundy and white ones.
I also have two pairs of New Balance, navy 327’s and white 480’s.

Battered Converse are great. I used to wear them to work.

I've been wearing Feiyue for years, but replaced my last worn out pair with a pair of red and white Onitsuka Tigers.

I really like these, with bonus marks for being UK ethically made: https://communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-shoes

If you don’t want a gym style sporty look, Vans are great, and won’t feel a million miles from your converse!

Trendier would be on cloud or Hokas - very sporty look but beautiful trainers.

WOMEN'S TRAINERS

Allbirds, they look good, they are sustainable, and some designs are water resistant so can be worn in the rain.

I adore sketchers stand on air trainers and have black doe every day wear and purple for the gym

I wear Hoka for the gym and Nike Cortez in various colours are my go to for the rest of the time. I have quite narrow feet and the shape of Cortez suits that.

Littletreefrog · 11/01/2026 17:15

Thank you everyone. I went for these. I have a pair of Hoka's and New Balance for running so fancied something different for feeling smart.

They all look like they’ve come from the middle aisle at Lidl 😬

Good choice OP those will look great with denim and if you have wide leg trousers as well.

I like the Larroude "Stella." It comes in various colors. larroude.com/collections/sneakers/products/white-stella-sneaker-leather

Hoff is my choice, i have several pairs & love them

SomeOtherUser · 11/01/2026 22:01

I'm also a casual dresser and don't really ever wear uncomfortable shoes, but may I suggest boots as an alternative to trainers? Low-heeled Chelsea boots or lace-up ankle boots can be very comfy and stylish (enough). 😁

omggggggg · 11/01/2026 22:06

Nice choice @Littletreefrog

omggggggg · 11/01/2026 22:07

Christ no to zip on trainers unless you have mobility problems. It’s something I can imagine my 89 year old nan wearing

OyWithThePoodlesAlready84 · 11/01/2026 22:08

Woden! Super comfy and many different colours and styles. From dressy to casual/sporty.
The autumn/winter collection is different from the summer sneakers, so make sure you go for the right ones. (Winter has much thicker lining and summer are often more breathable)

I'm 62 and have always had Superga. Don't get old before your time !! Adidas also good.
