Smartish trainers for 40 something year old

I'm in my 40s and have never really been bothered about clothes etc. As long as they are practical they will do. But I want to start dressing more stylishly. I have started with a pair of Boden girlfriend jeans to replace my many pairs of skinny jeans. Wide legged jeans looked awful on me. But the only footwear I have is some very battered converse and my running trainers. I would like some smart trainers to go with the jeans. I have an upcoming spa weekend in Harrogate and would like to feel nice and smart but comfy. Any ideas?

I like the look of under armour but the grip was terrible and they wore out quick

I will stick with adidas, Nike and Skechers … at least you know there half decent quality

Fitfunfab · 17/01/2026 01:57

I think Skechers are a love hate type or shoe lol
everyone I know loves em all ages, I don’t like all of them but generally find a decent pair, I bought a pair of black high tops, look stylish for work and wear with skinny jeans, my some has a great waterproof paid with a Goodyear sole look quality and stylish

I like Hoff - although not sure on some of the colour combinations, Adidas & Veja.

Woden! Super comfy and many different colours and styles. From dressy to casual/sporty.
The autumn/winter collection is different from the summer sneakers, so make sure you go for the right ones. (Winter has much thicker lining and summer are often more breathable)

Hi! how did you find the sizes and ordering process? It's shipped from Denmark, are there any import taxes or customs issues I would want to know about? Hope you can help, thanks 😊

Allbirds, they look good, they are sustainable, and some designs are water resistant so can be worn in the rain.

These are awful (IMO), sorry.

Mumwithbaggage · 18/01/2026 00:09

It's hard. The trainers my late 20s/early 30s kids can wear look sad on me - Allbirds etc. I do rather like the shiny ones from M and S. That mesh on Allbirds screams old lady. I have friends who wear slip on Skechers at my age )61) and I cannot bring myself to wear them either because they just look so sad and given up on life. While I can still bend over to do up my shoes, I will wear shoes with laces. Guess I'll be carried out in my Converse/Adidas! At least my feet will be comfortable!

I really like these, with bonus marks for being UK ethically made: https://communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-shoes

If you don’t want a gym style sporty look, Vans are great, and won’t feel a million miles from your converse!

Trendier would be on cloud or Hokas - very sporty look but beautiful trainers.

Wow. Those are gawjus 😍. I’m gonna get a pair. Can’t wait to wear them to the office!

Sizes are accurate. It has been a few years since I ordered mine (bought the first pair in a store and the 2nd and 3d online). I am in not in the UK but shipping to my country (NL) was fine. I realize it could be a different experience in UK unless they have a UK branche ... Sorry not of much help!! Maybe there is more useful info on their website?

These replies show how subjective taste is because I wouldn’t wear most of the suggestions if you paid me.

Agree entirely but what trainers grace your feet?

Shiny metallic shoes 😨 that’s definitely something I could imagine my 62 year old mum
wearing, or her 80 something mum. Not for me in my 40s!

GrethaGreen · 08/02/2026 18:03

My favourite are Hoff trainers. So comfortable and stylish, but also not worn by my young adult sons and girlfriends which I like.

I also like the look of some Gola trainers, but worried they won’t be as comfy as Hoff.

LucyLoo1972 · 12/02/2026 15:58

Vivaia are so so comfortable

My reaction to these is similar to how I felt about the mesh ballet pumps that were everywhere last year: just nope.

I've got them in yellow 💛 not shiny gold
