Smartish trainers for 40 something year old

I'm in my 40s and have never really been bothered about clothes etc. As long as they are practical they will do. But I want to start dressing more stylishly. I have started with a pair of Boden girlfriend jeans to replace my many pairs of skinny jeans. Wide legged jeans looked awful on me. But the only footwear I have is some very battered converse and my running trainers. I would like some smart trainers to go with the jeans. I have an upcoming spa weekend in Harrogate and would like to feel nice and smart but comfy. Any ideas?

My sons wears a really good pair of Skechers to uni, bloody decent quality and waterproof he is 20 and stylish he isn’t a follower, same with me we set the trend I don’t give a shit what’s cool but I find some Skechers shoes I’ve owned to be the best, I used to buy Nike and adidas but they look shit the see day and quality doesn’t seem as good as it used to be

’We set the trend’

in…Skechers. 😂

Christ no to zip on trainers unless you have mobility problems. It’s something I can imagine my 89 year old nan wearing

I’m relatively young compared to your elderly nana and I am pretty flexible too .
But I like the zip on trainer for a few reasons .
I have narrow feet so I can do the laces part up nice and firm but still get them on quickly as I’m often in a hurry / in and out of house + we are a shoes off household .
Also I wore them a fair bit in Japan as you often have to remove shoes .
i would wear slip ons but they end up too loose and my feet slip out (narrow foot with a particularly narrow heel 😬)

Chelsea boots or look at a good shoe shop like Jones the boot maker .
Alternatively Clarks have some solid colour trainers

Trainers aren't smart though! Find some nice shoes or boots instead.

Moda in Pelle are good for zips

Mercurial123 · 14/01/2026 17:30

I've been wearing Nike Cortez for the last two years.

They're a bit marmite with regards to comfort. I gave mine away as they were so heavy and uncomfortable.

IdaGlossop · 14/01/2026 17:58

Geox are the most comfortable trainers I have found.

Can I ask re sizing please? Do they come up true to size or need to size up/down? Thanks

Lacoste Carnaby Evo
Sans Martin
Plain white Air Force 1

all look great with jeans and go with pretty much anything, and are all comfortable

TheLette · 14/01/2026 22:58

Love my Hoff trainers. Mine have gold wipeable fabric so have stayed very nice looking and they are so very comfortable.

TheGrinchWasHere · 15/01/2026 05:03

No to zips or pull on sneakers
No to Skechers

And add no to Allbirds (just discovered above)

😂

minnowonthesay · 15/01/2026 05:16

Controversial but I love an M & S trainer, they are just so comfortable! My latest addition are the brown ones

Adidas - gazelle bold, spezial or samba og (personally I think campus are so uncomfortable but my daughter likes them)
new balance - 530, 370 or 327
Nike - cortez
puma - speedcat
basically those of us in our 40’s are back to our teen days!
cons never go out of fashion though.

I like the Nike Field General range. Some of them are all one colour so the logo is camouflaged. (I'm not overly keen on logos).

Same

Florencesndzebedee · 15/01/2026 09:46

I’ve been reading about ‘sneakerinas’ coming into fashion - a cross between trainers and ballet shoes. I think Adidas do them and some other brands. They might fit the bill.
