Hi everyone, as above, can anyone help with possible dress ideas for wedding in a couple of months time. Weather will be mild, I’m size 6-8, short and wear most colours, and would wear heels etc. fancy wedding with long lunch and after party. Excited but a bit daunted!

I’d be very tempted to take a lamp and go as a genie, what a stupid idea to give guests a theme. Adhering to a colour palette is bad enough.

What a horrible dress code. It makes it seem like a competition between guests - who's come up with the best 'polished but playful' costume? Shiny clown outfit, maybe?

How fun! I take pride in dressing well and would love an excuse to wear a more bold outfit. How about a structured dress or asymmetrical dress. https://clubllondon.com/products/perrie-burgundy-asymmetric-neck-maxi-dress-with-ruched-detailing-cl136833069

What's stopping you wearing that dress to a wedding if you want to? It's more evening-y than I'd wear to a wedding but if it's what you would like to then why wouldn't you?

The dress code given for this one is entirely meaningless so you could wear anything.@

Sandysandal · 11/01/2026 07:50

Wear what you would normally wear + entertaining earrings/bag/shoes/clown accessories. Or you could get a mask made of the brides face and dress as her.

i second the wedding dress idea.

bumphousebump · 11/01/2026 08:56

I’d wear something I love and add an amazing hat, love a hat and am a bit gutted they aren’t the thing at weddings anymore….

Thesummer · 11/01/2026 10:27

Just wear a dress you'd normally wear but slightly more colourful/out there, or wear some fun accessories. Everyone looks 'polished' at a wedding anyway as they're dressed up with hair and makeup done!

I don't think it's that bad a theme, better than a strict colour scheme. I think it's quite a nice excuse to wear a bright colour that you might normally feel a bit self conscious wearing. Ask other guests what they're wearing if you know any other people going.

Chillijamtoday · 11/01/2026 11:39

In my experience, people who come out with wanky dress codes like that never really mean it. They mean polished and that’s how most of the other guests will probably take it, maybe with a fun bag or earrings or shoes. I went to one a few weeks ago where the invitation theme was Bohemian/festival looking and the dress code was ‘come ready to party’, but literally all the guests and the wedding party were just dressed perfectly normally in wedding attire. I think people always like to sound more edgy than they actually are.

I'd go as Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast. He is surely both polished and playful?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/01/2026 11:11

I don't like dress 'themes'. It always shouts to me that this is all about the wedding, not the marriage. Surely you just want friends and family to come looking smart and feeling comfortable, not worrying that perhaps they don't look 'polished' enough, or are they giving enough 'playful'? It it too much? Not enough?

For me it's contradictory, polished means dressed up while playful means informal. I'd wear something really smart, a nice fitted dress and maybe a feather in my hair or an enormous brooch or something.

YY to this. Themes are about the weddings and the photos - they're probably the kind of people who post everything on SM.

I wouldn’t go because they sound like twats.

That made me laugh 😂!
True, though.

Hair in bobbles, dungarees from Lucy and Yak, ankle socks and Saltwater sandals.

I don't think that's either polished or playful?
You could wear shoes in a bright colour, and maybe a big bow in your hair?

This one from Hobbs (on sale) - polished but fun colours and a bit of sparkle. I just got the 8 and it’s a gorgeous cut and material.

I really like that dress, and it's a great call for a regular wedding, but doesn't fall into the "playful" category?
Although, to be fair, "polished but playful" is a bit contradictory.

Idk playful is so vague id say the contrast leans into it

I think that's a fair point.

I don't understand what you mean by "leans into it"?
