Warm coat that’s also waterproof

BeenChangedForGood · 04/01/2026 16:51

I’m in desperate need of a coat that’s actually warm! And waterproof. Needs to survive a 40 minute walk from home to nursery to work, on the west coast of Scotland 😅

I have a puffer style from Monsoon which is not particularly warm or waterproof 😅 and I usually live in my dark green Seasalt Plant Hunter which does the job in the rain but is freezing!

To add to the difficulty - I’m a size 22 so needs to be available in larger sizes. I also have a health condition which makes me feel the cold more 😬 so need it to be properly toasty lol

Any suggestions would be welcome ☺️

I’ve got the Seasalt Holywell Bay and it’s waterproof and warm. Have a look on Vinted.

Posted about this loads got this last year and it's brilliant just been away were it got to -7 and snowing and was still warm and more importantly dry.

Black Changing Robe | Black Robe Coat | Delta Roam https://share.google/QvCbC8k6yPphSREtx

It's a more tailored fit than a dry robe.

Another vote for the Seasalt Janelle here! It is the warmest coat I’ve ever owned and still manages to look fairly smart for work etc compared to similar ones I considered.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/01/2026 10:09

You might want to consider the farming/shooting/fishing type coats, OP! You might look a bit odd in muted colours, if they're not your usual thing, but they keep us warm through winter- and dry underneath! They're also usually generous with sizing, to accommodate movement as well as the unlikely need for an extra fleece or something underneath... and you get zip-in maternity extenders, should you not wish to abandon your favourite coat for nine months!

They are expensive, but they're worth their weight in gold, and last, despite the amount of use and abuse that they get! Kaiwaka, Ridgeline and Seeland are all expensive but good.

I bought the Seasalt Janelle this year because the waterproof I had (also Seasalt) wasn't cutting it. It's warm and smart enough for me to wear on the commute, the only problem is that I ordered a size up to the waterproof I have (a 20 instead of an 18) and it was way too small, I ended up in a 22 so if you are thinking about it, order it in the biggest size.

Would highly recommend Mountain Warehouse - they go up to a 24 in almost all coats.

This one is 2 layers so you can take the internal bit out as it warms up, is waterproof and covers your butt:

https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/p/025440/mw/alaskan-womens-3-in-1-long-waterproof-jacket/light-beige/

And you get 15% off sale prices if your have a Blue Light card - I think their membership includes nursery staff now.

I second Mountain Warehouse. I have this in the navy. I bought it for a trip to Norway and then used it on a trip to Iceland. Really handy being able to take the quilted part out for wet but not cold days.

I've got a Seasalt Janelle that I wear for dog walking, it's a really good length (meets the top of my wellies) and completely covers the back of my legs as a result. If you look on the Seasalt Ebay site you can often get old colours at really good prices - I paid about £70 for mine and it's more than paid for itself on cold wet days.

I second this. I've had my Janelle for over 5 years and it's been amazing. Really warm, really waterproof and mud just brushes off it.

The only downside is that every other woman in my town seems to own one, too.

GreatAmberGoose · 05/01/2026 19:02

This is my dog walkIng coat. I love it. It’s in its 5th year. Lots of pockets, it’s waterproof and warm but not overly hot so it’s comfortable when you are on a quick walk. Covers your bum which I hate getting cold. It’s also long enough to
hide the fact I am still in pjs underneath if I need an early walk. Sold in fog outdoors. www.craghoppers.com/womens-rosalind-ii-jacket-black/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%7Bcampaignname%7D_21012710827&utm_content=%7Badgroupname%7D_155561585661&utm_term=&utm_brand=craghoppers&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21012710827&gclid=CjwKCAiA3-3KBhBiEiwA2x7FdDVI7LbPCY2IogebMMLbYfKSYI-PUdn5ObTk8dGGEC82WIMI1NUzghoCi7QQAvD_BwE

if you have a large chest, that rules out Didrikson's I'm afraid. They're beautifully warm, but that's no good if you can't do it up.
The seasalt warm waterproof coats have always been my go to for dog walking coats. I got a Finisterre Skye this year for a change, but it's neither warm enough or waterproof enough for the middle of winter - I'm having to wear a down jacket underneath it at the moment, and I'm in the south of England.

macbethany · 06/01/2026 00:32

my suggestion for warmth --- battery powered gillet. toasty!

Strumpetpumpet · 06/01/2026 07:57

I have a didriksons parka and it’s lovely and toasty and properly waterproof

Southwest12 · 06/01/2026 08:20

I think my dog walking coat is a Seasalt Janelle. Am about to put it on Vinted as it's too big for me now. It was really warm and properly waterproof. Has lovely big pockets too. I think some of them are in the sale at the moment, so maybe a good time to get one. I've washed mine quite a few times, with the proper waterproofing stuff, and it washes well too.

I have this - it’s warmish but for proper cold wrath I jace much thicker coat (although not totally water proof from Mountain warehouse

@umberellaonesie @RandomMess @Purplemoonboots Thank you! Can I ask what the sizing is like on the Landsend coat? I’m a 22 with quite a large chest. Size options are 20-22 or 24-26. Am I better with the bigger one or are they generous?

I am a 12 and wear a small 10/12 it is perfect. They are really good if you contact them and ask for advice. But I would also say get the measuring tape out and compare the measurements

I agree with this, the sizing is small. I bought a 22 last year, which wasn’t a massive difference to my 20 in other tops. This year I wear a 16 in most brands and thought I could downsize to an 18 in the Janelle but that wasn’t the case!

The Landsend plus range is not generous if you have a larger bust. I size up on non-stretchy tops and jackets and down on trousers, which are designed with apple-shaped Americans in mind.

Agreed there. But I’m not sure that the squall coat will be warm enough tbh. I have the squall and would need a gilet underneath for this weather. The expedition down coat is really thick and toasty. https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Hooded_Expedition_Maxi_Long_Down_Coat/pp/P_42439.html They’ve only got a 28-30. I’d chance it. I’m an 18 and I bought a 24-26 to wear over the top of a second coat a few years ago to watch my dd ride outside in winter. One of my Landsend coats has bitten the dust after about 10 years (I rotate 2) so I’m wearing that one now to walk the dogs and it’s actually even warmer on me than the more fitted size.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/01/2026 19:17

Further to my post just above, eBay have the 24-26 and the 20/22 of what looks to be the same coat (they change designs slightly every few years). New with tags. £45.01 plus £7.19 delivery. I am resisting temptation to buy the smaller size as I don’t need it... It’s a bargain. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/236288686390?_trkparms=itmf%3D1%26aid%3D1110006%26rkt%3D4%26mech%3D1%26algv%3DSimplAMLv11WebTrimmedWithMfgPhase2WithCassiniVisualRankerAndBertRecallWithPLXSizeFilterCPCAutoManualCpcRecallsPlus%26pmt%3D1%26amclksrc%3DITM%26sd%3D236288710269%26sid%3DAQAKAAAAEFLGz9KHsXhnLrbYIhym8xQ%3D%26itm%3D236288686390%26noa%3D0%26plcampt%3D0%3A14751067016%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26brand%3DLands%27+End%26asc%3D20240612083109%26ao%3D1%26rk%3D1%26pid%3D101875%26b%3D1%26mehot%3Dnone%26lsid%3D3%26meid%3Db02ea55cd20448eea42ca4f32ffd3592%26pg%3D2332490&_trksid=p2332490.c101875.m1851&itmprp=cksum%3A236288686390b02ea55cd20448eea42ca4f32ffd3592%7Cenc%3AAQAKAAABYBaLpzbeHMGtcPVbIdam4VW2%252FYBzHyA0eRDLd8ZvFNAxKnfYIxZeZ2SRkn%252BbAjw7ESlOnljO3GLHAlQV%252Fy90C0oGGWDfrMyptti%252F4cwG0UauRNImxT02pqUnaHVLOKRkUYCqb72aWWtbN7H1eAY0FamRqV81K6I%252F6%252BWeQnqfYMjRaJeW7E9hfK1K3LfQf7BGZWDEqsQEDdS%252FiRnk%252BY9s3JX5N8cUi9Cfmbcxklmmmvhqe59EBWDcBjtVrLiFQZfFGOLIMq6P24YzvWS6mY3m%252FaThygb2%252Bx6rRMnUtQZ%252BkMXIIHpyL0ma1Uz%252FY2DXJxuCgE2l8nzfI6C8yQno9OUARz1bJ0MoydH%252FRGninBGMi%252FgScfJS%252F052RJM6NyPuqg2vNf3kfa2ygLbCNJiPs82DHLc%252FYIW4jScmW5kEhgCjzzQZXcjTgaT0OypdhtD%252Fj7Uo%252FjBMkcbf8V4jdk5zlGin8wM%253D%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2332490

This! I recently got one after reading reccs on MN and was a bit 😳 at the cost but I got a bit off around Black Friday. I absolutely love it and have already had so much wear out of it. It really is waterproof (I’ve a Border Terrier and when we get home from a soggy walk you can see the rain drops sitting on both our coats) and boy so, so warm, helped I’m sure by it covering the back of my calves

We we have just got DD one in a maroon colour which was about £60 last week on their website. Got decent Cashback and joined SeaSalt rewards and got a few quid that way too!

100% recommend this ..bought to watch my son play Rugby ..wear it all the time now to walk the dog ..used to do winter mountineering so am used to down jackets/gortex jackets but this is better for warmth/windproofness than them all!! Bit of a Vera vibe with it though lol! There's various colours:
