Warm coat that’s also waterproof

BeenChangedForGood · 04/01/2026 16:51

I’m in desperate need of a coat that’s actually warm! And waterproof. Needs to survive a 40 minute walk from home to nursery to work, on the west coast of Scotland 😅

I have a puffer style from Monsoon which is not particularly warm or waterproof 😅 and I usually live in my dark green Seasalt Plant Hunter which does the job in the rain but is freezing!

To add to the difficulty - I’m a size 22 so needs to be available in larger sizes. I also have a health condition which makes me feel the cold more 😬 so need it to be properly toasty lol

Any suggestions would be welcome ☺️

Take care with second hand of the coat has specific waterproof qualities/tech fabric … you won’t know if the seller has washed it in a way that compromises that until you wear in the rain.

Would highly recommend Mountain Warehouse - they go up to a 24 in almost all coats.

This one is 2 layers so you can take the internal bit out as it warms up, is waterproof and covers your butt:

https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/p/025440/mw/alaskan-womens-3-in-1-long-waterproof-jacket/light-beige/

And you get 15% off sale prices if your have a Blue Light card - I think their membership includes nursery staff now.

I bought this one on the back of a recommendation on another thread here a few months ago. Money very well spent.

This is my dog walkIng coat. I love it. It’s in its 5th year. Lots of pockets, it’s waterproof and warm but not overly hot so it’s comfortable when you are on a quick walk. Covers your bum which I hate getting cold. It’s also long enough to
hide the fact I am still in pjs underneath if I need an early walk. Sold in fog outdoors. www.craghoppers.com/womens-rosalind-ii-jacket-black/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%7Bcampaignname%7D_21012710827&utm_content=%7Badgroupname%7D_155561585661&utm_term=&utm_brand=craghoppers&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21012710827&gclid=CjwKCAiA3-3KBhBiEiwA2x7FdDVI7LbPCY2IogebMMLbYfKSYI-PUdn5ObTk8dGGEC82WIMI1NUzghoCi7QQAvD_BwE

I had just bought this and it’s really waterproof and quite warm

I have a Helly Hansen Aden long coat, and have loved it for a few years. It isn't bulky, yet I can fit an extra layers for very cold days. I live on north coast of BC with weather very similar to west coast Scotland.

I do like the look of the Land End Squall, but wonder if it is heavy. I hate for a coat to weigh me down.

I have this one and can recommend it.

I've got a coat like this from Lands, End.

It is super warm, very water resistant and packs away into its only bag.

Honestly it's the best coat ever.

https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Wanderweight_Down_Ultralight_Packable_Hooded_Maxi_Coat/pp/P_43833.html?dwvar_P__43833_sizeVariation=59&dwvar_P__43833_color=HME&cgid=Tab_7&pageType=fp&pageType=search

I have Landsend water resistant coats. The down gets soaked in heavy rain and takes an age to dry so you end up freezing and the coat becomes incredibly heavy.

minskspies · 07/01/2026 07:34

I have had one for a few years from this brand https://www.elvineclothing.com/

I think mine goes down to -15. They categorise their coats as 'winter' 'heavy winter' and 'extreme winter', mine's a 'heavy winter' coat. They are the absolute cat's pyjamas.

Make sure it’s down, look at Patagonia and Nordic brands

Firetreev · 07/01/2026 08:38

Didriksons coats would fit the bill. Most of their coats are waterproof and they have a variety of insulation levels depending on the coat.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 07/01/2026 08:40

Reincoat Pro best coat I have ever had. I work outside in all weathers and this is the only one that has kept me dry all day and it’s incredibly warm and toasty. Very comfortable to wear as not restricting. You need the pro for the winter.

YourKhakiLeader · 07/01/2026 10:19

I’m obsessed with this coat I got from Asda. It’s long, showerproof, and keeps the wind out. I’m an 18 and I got a size L and it’s plenty big with room for a jumper underneath but I can go out with just a thin knit dress and leggings as it’s so warm - Asda sizes are generous. direct.asda.com/george/women/coats-jackets/animal-print-padded-longline-coat/G008227264,default,pd.html?redirectFromInt=1&cmpid=ppc--geor-------_-dskwid-_dm&utm_campaign=pla:Fashion-Womens_BAU-_Performance_Max&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18393605713&gclid=Cj0KCQiApfjKBhC0ARIsAMiR_IsZCknlvII3wA2_uEPFjtZwrG2p_AgjY55e1HpCSWRRWQZkrRro9LIaAt1rEALw_wcB

RampantIvy · 07/01/2026 11:21

I would avoid coats that are just showerproof and buy one that is fully waterproof. I have found out the hard way that there is a lot of difference between the two.

Mountain warehouse aurora extreme now on sale. 63%off . Warm, waterproof and available in a 22

Didriksons were on sale recently.

Problem with this brand is that they come up incredibly small.

I’ve had this Northface one for years. I’m in Scotland so I used it everyday for 5-6 months a year. It’s starting to look pretty tatty now so might get another. It’s expensive but it is my most worn piece of clothing and it really does the job

I think it makes more sense to layer for warmth. It's more flexible. I keep posting it on here but I'm really enjoying my new M&S waxed car coat this winter. It's long and waterproof and fairly warm in itself, and the style means it's easy to wear stuff underneath. I particularly wanted it for work as I sometimes wear jackets and my other coats didn't go over the jackets. Or were too short, not waterproof enough, too hot, too cold. I just came back from Tallinn and it was -10 degrees and snowing. This coat did the job with enough layers underneath. But with lighter layers underneath I dont overheat on the train to work.

I think it depends on the coat. My Didriksons is definitely a generous fit. It's a 38 (12), but fits more like a 40 (14). They also go up to size 26, so the OP could size up if she finds the coat runs small.

I bought a Seasalt Janelle yesterday in the sale, and am dithering about whether it's warm enough. It seems so light...

Lorrymum · 07/01/2026 19:42

Another vote for Seasalt Janelle. It's perfect for walking my dog, great length ( no rain water dripping onto my jeans) and totally waterproof. I have tried many coats over the years and this has been the best buy.

GaladrielHiggins · 07/01/2026 20:37

Agree, mine is the best, Didriksons are brilliant, I’m a 12/14 and wear a 40

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 07/01/2026 20:43

Another vote for Seasalt Janelle. Warm, dry, wind proof. Far better than my old puffer.

ilovesushi · 07/01/2026 23:56

I just got a Didrikson coat in the sale. It is lightweight but really warm. Am loving it. The brand always gets brought up on the dog owner boards. They look pretty boring and a bit drab in the photos but on it looks really good. I ordered the Antje coat.
