Silk dress for daughters wedding

Namechangefor2026 · 02/01/2026 11:41

I am 5ft 4 and 10.5 stone. I am really not very stylish but want something spectacular for my daughter’s wedding in a hot country. I have recently lost weight and will lose more beforehand i will be around 10stone hopefully. I don’t mind what the cost is as I am quite frugal usually. I would love something in bright colours and maybe for example raw silk. But open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Xx

Is the bride going shopping with you? And do you prefer actual shops? I need to see and feel and try on rather than order and send back.
Im 5'4 and need my whole body stretched by 6 inches to be anyway similar to the models. Some things can be altered but some are too complicated.
I hire hats now. And decide on the day. Visiting the hat lady is more fun than mob shopping!

Bride lives very far away in different country. I will be there when she gets her wedding dress but my dress will be ordered online.

Would this be too short, OP? It's actually not from this year's collection, but there may be something very similar in the D&G collection for this summer.

I will be honest. I really don’t like these liberty prints. I am mid 60s but still feel quite young, I’d like something in single colour in nice material and not too long.

Fair enough, I am 40 and would wear these though 😅

I really love this!

Not sure about the material and would prefer short sleeves but it’s gorgeous.

When I read your preferred style, Jasper Conran was my first thought. He does the dresses in really vibrant silks 🙂 Their website's playing sillybuggers at the moment, but here's the link: https://www.jasperconran.com/collections/silk-dresses

Not sure if they've got short sleeves at this time of year. If I were you, I'd ring them up and ask.

Silk Dresses

Soft and refined but also strong and durable, silk is the perfect material for occasion dresses. Our silk dresses at Jasper Conran are designed with you in mind

I found these people. I know nothing about them - try asking on here or in Weddings? They're in Brighton (UK). They only make the one style, which you can have with a halter strap. They offer a good selection of raw silks in strong colours.

I wore this & Other Stories number to a wedding in September and I weighed similar to you. Lovely length (I am 5 ft 6) and there were lots of colours to choose from. I’d see what silk / satin numbers they have in their latest season. I wore big shapewear M&S pants underneath for a smooth tummy and was comfy! https://www.stories.com/en-us/product/sleeveless-satin-midi-dress-pastel-yellow-1257049011/

Unfortunately they’re huge with no petite option. Not sure great for person of average female height 5”4. Beautiful design though.

I'm 5 4 and I have a JC shirt dress - provided you go for the standard length and not the maxi its fine (and taking up a hem or shortening a sleeve is not an expensive job either). I love mine and the obi belt adds to the style. If I were buying one for a wedding in a hot country I'd be very tempted to buy the matching oversized sun hat.

Good to know. Thank you.
My experience was years ago. I do love the look of them. Might try myself for my nephew’s wedding in the summer.

They are really lovely - I have a cotton one (bought for dd's graduation) and it is really comfortable.

I wore a silk dress from Hobbs for my stepson’s wedding and loved it. I felt very special. They don’t have many in right now, it’s not quite time for the new stock to arrive, but worth checking back.
I like the colours and shape of this one, and it’s a fab price just now.

Why don’t you tell us about the length and style you prefer? Fitted all over, fitted only at waist, empire, A line, poofy or sleek?

Victoria Beckham has lots of lovely dresses:

My only concern would be sweat patches from the heat though.

seriously gorgeous. But not me xx

Wedding isn’t until September so I’ve loads of time. I’m in NI so not near any liberty shops.
I hadn’t thought of the sweat issue with silk. I don’t tend to sweat much but mightn’t take that risk. Another thing to think about!
I don’t think I want to go custom made. I’d rather find something premade but maybe get it adjusted if necessary.
Thanks everyone! Xx

How about something in cotton with broderie anglaise - it's usually very airy and perfect in hot weather. There are also some options in Aspiga, like this one https://www.aspiga.com/products/pippa-block-print-dress-garden-jaal-pink-white

Pippa Block Print Dress | Garden Jaal Pink/White

Hand block printed in Jaipur and made from 100% organic cotton, the Pippa is the ultimate summer occasion dress. The cinched-in waist is elasticated for comfort while giving an uber-feminine silhouette, combined with a plunging neckline and cap sleeves...
