Silk dress for daughters wedding

Namechangefor2026 · 02/01/2026 11:41

I am 5ft 4 and 10.5 stone. I am really not very stylish but want something spectacular for my daughter’s wedding in a hot country. I have recently lost weight and will lose more beforehand i will be around 10stone hopefully. I don’t mind what the cost is as I am quite frugal usually. I would love something in bright colours and maybe for example raw silk. But open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Xx

Morning @Namechangefor2026

I did a quick look-did you mention the bridesmaid colours/colour of wedding?

Because although you don't necessarily want to "match" if you are worried about not sticking out then I would def take that into consideration.

Remember photos etc. There are some gorgeous options on here.
So my questions:
Colour of bridesmaids?
Do you want sleeves?
Do you want long?
Will you wear a hat?
What is MOB wearing?
How formal is the wedding?
Because some of these suggestions seem black tie wedding to me whilst some are summer casual with plimsoles.

You will def be able to wear flat sandals-loads of pretty ones so don't worry about wearing flats-summer very forgiving!

I think next step is for us all to go shopping with you 😉

Laurmolonlabe · 03/01/2026 10:24

I know this might sound counter-intuitive but I wouldn't recommend silk for a hot climate- it's a protein fibre like wool and is an excellent insulator. Personally i'd go for a tailored linen suit with a delicate lace or georgette blouse.

Have a look at Dea Kudibal. They do some beautiful colourful prints in good quality silk. I bought a dress by them for my DSis wedding last year. It was a warm day, the dress wasn’t overly structured and hung beautifully so was incredibly comfortable.

I bought another dress from their collection off Vinted because it was so comfortable. The bonus is that they are easily wearable as a comfortable summer dress and can be dressed up with shoes and hat or just worn as a casual summer dress. I’ve also worn them with boots and a long sleeved t shirt underneath in the winter. You could wear them with leggings for extra warmth.

I wore a beautiful red silk dress from Rixo to my son's wedding in Spain. I felt glamorous but comfortable and it's very flattering! They have lots of gorgeous silk dresses!

This? The 12 is sold out but I think Whistles come up big and the 10 is still available. John Lewis has it available to rent in a 12.

Beautiful!!

OP I am begging you not to buy anything yet. You don't know what you want. In the OP you say you want something spectacular but then later on you want to blend in. You acknowledge you have competing priorities, but I think the first step is to really decide what you want. Why would you want to blend in? You're MOB. And why the need to look like you haven't tried? If you're not naturally stylish (by your own admission) you'll need to try, or you'll probably look a bit crap. Effortless style is rarely effortless.

You also seem to be drawn to what are IMO some of the worst suggestions on the thread. The red Saloni dress is stunning, but in the blue it seems to be shorter and frumpier. The Jolie Moi dress - I'm sorry but it's awful. It's also polyester which would be a nightmare at a beach wedding.

You're also shopping at the wrong time of the year for linen/cotton/silk summer occasion dresses. I did find one option that I think would be beautiful, but I think you'd need to come to terms with not blending in.

Harrods and Liberty have beautiful ones.
Also look at Victoria Beckham, they do flatter and some of the styles have a fab range of colours.
Armani do wide trousers that scream elegance, it is the fabrics they use. Go into the shop, the sales staff are extremely helpful.

TheSquareMile · 03/01/2026 17:26

In which country will the wedding be taking place, OP?

Londonmummy66 · 03/01/2026 17:29

I wore this to a summer wedding and got a lot of compliments. It feels amazing on and the quality is great. I'm 5'3.5 and the length was perfect on me. It can also be dressed down as shown by the model so you'd get wear out of it.

I do agree and I am very conflicted and confused on what I want. I adore this red dress. All of the models are very flat chested and I unfortunately am not. It makes it hard to assess how they would look on me. But I totally agree. I need to not rush into anything. I want to be beautiful but understated - a contradiction in terms! My ex will be there with his new wife so I need to feel very in control and definitely comfortable in what I wear.

Is the bride going shopping with you? And do you prefer actual shops? I need to see and feel and try on rather than order and send back.
Im 5'4 and need my whole body stretched by 6 inches to be anyway similar to the models. Some things can be altered but some are too complicated.
I hire hats now. And decide on the day. Visiting the hat lady is more fun than mob shopping!

Namechangefor2026 · 03/01/2026 19:32

I should add i will be 66. I feel quite young and fit though.

Or there’s this one if you’re ok with full length - I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?
