A Longines watch

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 18:26

I was never a watch person, no interest at all, ever. Until today. I found myself looking at Longines watches in a local jewellers. Really loved a few of them, they were just beautiful.

The one I loved is €1900. Is it bonkers? I absolutely have the money in savings. Mid 50s, mortgage paid, no chlldren.DH would not be bothered at all. It just feels frivolous. Are Longines a good buy?

I was with my sister who loves Tag watches but they do nothing for me.

Any Longines lovers here?

Me. I got a Dolce Vita for Christmas. I love it.

tarheelbaby · 27/12/2025 18:46

If you love it and you can afford it, buy it. You will see it every day on your wrist and it will lift you a little. (My Dsis, similar age, no kids, would not hesitate)

These days, because most 'luxury' watches have quartz movement, they are pretty bracelets with a time-telling function, even TAG, Cartier and Dior have quartz movement.

Only a few have 'watchmaking' credentials: e.g. Rolex - actual gears but cleverly engineered to wind themselves on your movements; patek philippe - need winding, even!

Me. I got a Dolce Vita for Christmas. I love it.

I am not a watch or jewellery sorted of person at all but I can absolutely see why you love this, it's beautiful.
OP as you can afford it but the watch you want, it'll hopefully give you pleasure for years.

Sidebeforeself · 27/12/2025 19:12

I’ve had a one for nearly forty years now. I love it and it is still a thing of beauty

Cando6 · 27/12/2025 19:12

I know nothing about watches and that one looks nothing special but with that rather limp set of credentials I say buy it if you love it. Children cost hundreds of thousands. What’s life without pleasure? Can’t take it with you etc etc

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 19:17

@Philandbill I think it would, I am enjoying just looking at it!

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 19:21

@SidebeforeselfWow, I am happy to hear they last so long and that you still enjoy it.

I am away for the next couple of days so will give it some thought while I'm gone. Also, I have a €500 gift card (Christmas bonus) which I would probably just fritter away on Amazon so could put it toward the wstch instead 😆

Go for it. You’ll get a buzz every time you look at it

KrazyboutKillian · 27/12/2025 19:25

Buy the watch you love , you have a voucher and as a pp said you will wear it everyday , everyday a little bit of joy !

I love watches tho and would buy it in a heartbeat

come back and show it off once you have it

OhDear111 · 27/12/2025 19:25

@WishimaywishimightThe best watches are absolutely not battery powered! Rolex are not. I have an automatic Omega constellation. Also a manual Jaeger Le Coultre. I do have a battery Cartier and an Omega Seamaster. The automatics cost more and for good reason.

Longines are ok but not a top manufacturer. More of a fashion watch in many ways - manufacturers that make automatic watches for women are better.

BIossomtoes · 27/12/2025 19:29

The Grande Classique is a lovely watch. I bought Mr B a silver one many years ago, he’s currently into much chunkier watches and wears his Longines with a suit.

tarheelbaby · 27/12/2025 19:30

Go for it!!!
Thank you. :) I have picked up a bit about jewellry over the years.

Mainly, if you like it and you have tried it on and can afford it, buy it and enjoy it as a time-telling bracelet. It also looks easy to read from across the room so may last you many years rather than becoming too small to read ....

the link is helpful:
Your choice seems good quality for its category.
It is plated but all watches, except stainless steel, are unless they have a leather strap/band.
If you know diamonds, you'll know that VS-SI diamonds are a high spec (almost overly) for this sort of thing although there's no mention of cut quality (actually more relelvant since sparkle is mainly about reflection); at that size, I should think it hardly matters since they are too tiny for that to matter.

Amiable · 27/12/2025 19:32

I have a Longines Grande Classique - absolutely love it. Had it over 15 years now and still looks gorgeous.

do be warned though, you’ll need to get a new battery every 3 years or so and you will have to have it sent back to Longines for about 2 months to get this done, and have the watch serviced. It will cost at least £90 each time, depending on the exact style.

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 19:36

Some of you are so knowledgeable and I appreciate your advice very much. I will do a little research first but I do feel I an heading toward making the purchase!! I am not at all looking at an investment piece, just something I will love to wear.

TheGirlattheBack · 27/12/2025 19:36

As someone who didn’t buy the watch I loved 30 years ago and regretted it ever since, I say, buy it now!

Nofksleft2give · 27/12/2025 19:37

I paid £110 for the replacement battery recently. It’s a real pain not having the watch for two months. Hard to believe it has to take that time.

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 19:37

@AmiableThank you for that information, I will definitely bear that in mind. 2 months is a long time!!

OP posts:
isitmytime · 27/12/2025 19:38

Longine are seen as a luxury brand and they do last well. I love watches and has a few decent brands as a PP says you’ll wear it daily and if to look at it on a price per wear then it’s definitely worth it.
im currently coveting a Rolex and im planning getting it for my 50th

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 19:38

@Nofksleft2giveThat does seem like a crazy amount of time!

I love Longines watches - I have an automatic Evidenza which I wear all the time.

Edited to say no idea why I quoted another post!

My husband is a real watch connoisseur and he bought me a Longines when I was pregnant with our first...who is now 20 years old. Beautiful watch and gone up in value over this time. He replaces the battery for me, so no need to wait

Schoolstressed · 27/12/2025 20:43

I bought that model in the silver version in May 2024. I have worn it every day since and there’s been no trouble with it. I love it.
