A Longines watch

Wishimaywishimight · 27/12/2025 18:26

I was never a watch person, no interest at all, ever. Until today. I found myself looking at Longines watches in a local jewellers. Really loved a few of them, they were just beautiful.

The one I loved is €1900. Is it bonkers? I absolutely have the money in savings. Mid 50s, mortgage paid, no chlldren.DH would not be bothered at all. It just feels frivolous. Are Longines a good buy?

I was with my sister who loves Tag watches but they do nothing for me.

Any Longines lovers here?

Can someone explain to a peasant like me ... what is an automatic watch?

MarxistMags · 27/12/2025 21:06

That truly is lovely 😍 About £1500 in GBP ? Go for it 😁

I’ve got a Longines watch - the cheapest model available - that I received for my 21st birthday. I wear it all day everyday and only take it off when I shower or swim.
My local independent jeweller replaces the battery as and when necessary. Mine came with a leather strap and over the years I’ve gone through plenty. I simply buy another top quality strap from the jewellers and she fits it for me retaining the original Longines buckle.
A couple of weeks ago someone posted on here about wanting to buy their son a good quality watch and I responded suggesting Longines, not realising how expensive they now were. Since then adverts regularly appear on my Facebook and instagram and my goodness some of the watches are absolutely beautiful. I wouldn’t hesitate to use savings to buy another if mine stopped working. That said I would still only go for one of their plainer models that has a nice clear clock face and a leather strap. I am not a jewellery wearer so the bracelet style straps hold no appeal for me

i bought a nice watch last year. i was between longines and tudor. i went for a 1926 tudor with a leather strap, it gets worn most days, go with most clothes and is an automatic. really happy with it.
treat yourself! 🙂

I’ve had a Longines Dolcevita for about twenty years. I wear it every day and it still makes me happy to see it on my wrist.

BamberGirl · 27/12/2025 22:45

I’ve had a Luna for 15 years, was a 40th present…I wear it every day and love it

BamberGirl · 27/12/2025 22:48

I have this one…just googled and shocked at price, I think mine was £700 but I guess that’s just inflation.

@DorotheaXYZ An automatic watch has no battery. It’s essentially got a watch movement in it that works whilst you are wearing it. It stops when you are not wearing it. You then wind it up to restart it. The main difference is the watch has a far better quality movement than a battery one. Do consider that Rolex does not make a battery watch at all. All modern Rolex are automatic. These are the collectable watches - especially men’s watches. Other brands like Patek Philippe aren’t powered by batteries either. The best watches in the world with complicated movements are all automatic.

Neither are all gold coloured watches plated. There are gold and white gold watches too. Just depends what you pay.

DorotheaXYZ · 28/12/2025 07:16

Thank you @OhDear111

I remember when watches with batteries first came on the market - we thought they were wonderful because we no longer had to wind them up! I can now see the retro charm in winding up a wrist watch.

Darklane · 28/12/2025 07:41

If you love it & can afford it then buy it.
Personally, if I was looking for a watch I would buy a mechanical or perhaps automatic good make watch from an antique auction house rather than pay the VAT & markup on a new retail battery watch.

Meadowfinch · 28/12/2025 07:43

I bought a jewelled Longines Conquest with my first big bonus, in 1993. It's still going strong and I still love it.
It still feels quietly classy and hasn't dated.

ThisJadeBear · 28/12/2025 07:49

A good quality watch is a fantastic investment. This one is gorgeous think about cost per wear. One like this over 20 years costs about 0.16 Euros a day.
I have had mine for 27 years next year, looked after it, many years to go.
You can afford it, treat yourself!

KnottyKnitting · 28/12/2025 07:59

I have a longines watch that DH bought me for our 20th Wedding anniversary. It’s just lovely- such fabulous quality and looks as good now as the day I got it (16 years ago. )

One that doesn't take a battery or need winding.

There are different methods of achieving this, either through movement of wearer or, in the case of the one around my wrist light powered.

OP If you go ahead then the two months it is being serviced is an opportunity to buy another watch.

If you love it and you can afford it, buy it. You will see it every day on your wrist and it will lift you a little. (My Dsis, similar age, no kids, would not hesitate)

These days, because most 'luxury' watches have quartz movement, they are pretty bracelets with a time-telling function, even TAG, Cartier and Dior have quartz movement.

Only a few have 'watchmaking' credentials: e.g. Rolex - actual gears but cleverly engineered to wind themselves on your movements; patek philippe - need winding, even!

Agreed.
I bought an omega mychoice constellation watch when I was 23 or 24 (it was a months wages) slightly annoyed i didnt spend £500 more and buy a rolex but there we are!

I'm 42 I still love it.
Cost per wear is wellllll under £1 now. 😅

But quartz watches usually keep better time than all those fancy gears on an automatic.

OhDear111 · 28/12/2025 09:27

@sashh An automatic watch only works when you wear it. If you leave it in its box for a week because you are wearing another watch, you need to wind it or restart it.

In watches, there is a hierarchy of makers. No Longines will make serious money by keeping it. A Rolex will appreciate but costs significantly more.

BIossomtoes · 28/12/2025 09:41

Most people don’t see a watch as an investment, they just buy something they like.

whatawalley · 28/12/2025 09:49

Love love love them. I bought one for my husband.

Do it! You only live once and why bother working and saving if you can't enjoy the benefits.

I am not able to buy a Rolex or other top brand watch. I have 3 that run on day light. Once fully 'charged' they work for 2 years even in darkness.

I suppose they are not 'automatic' in the sense of cogs and gears. I think they have a
battery that is charged by daylight.

Just thought I'd update with a couple of photos of my new watch 😁

BIossomtoes · 12/01/2026 18:56

So pleased you bought it. It’s a thing of beauty that will give you a lifetime of pleasure.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/01/2026 19:04

Thanks @DorotheaXYZ I keep looking at it 😁.

@Blossomtoes I went to look at in the jewellers 3 or 4 times! I was set on the gold face then at the last minute went for the mother of pearl - it's so lovely 😍
