A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

Try the Sessun website: they have a good sale on.

Paris in January?? A couple of degrees colder than London on average and almost as wet. You need a proper winter coat!

Pure Cotton Waxed Hooded Longline Car Coat | M&S | M&S
I've been loving this as my go to winter coat this year. It's waterproof and warm but not TOO heavy. Can layer underneath easily. Hood works very well. Seems to bridge smart/casual. Nice and long. I got sick of being damp on my walk to work in wool coats or shorter waterproofs. Didnt get on with big puffa coats as I tended to get too hot.

This longline car coat is made from waxed cotton for a heritage feel. It's cut in a regular fit, with popper fastenings and an adjustable removable hood. The corduroy collar adds a touch of contrast, while two side pockets and an internal pocket keep y...

If you wear a short jacket, no matter how warm, you will still be cold from the middle down. For Paris in January you need something at least knee-length.

Surely that depends what you wear on your legs..? I have thermal lined trousers for cold days. I prefer a short jacket if I'm walking around (fast walker), knee-length coats and jackets only really work for me for short periods of time going from car to inside or standing around outside for a while.

Average January temperatures in Paris are between 2 and 7 degrees C and damp.

I think you are overthinking the looking stylish aspect and need to consider the practicality aspect of a jacket or coat. A dry cold is much easier to bear than a damp cold.

Ah sorry - most people on this site are from the UK. I recommend weatherspark for looking at average weather conditions. But in short - cold and damp!

I'm from the UK and still don't know what London's weather is like in January... I mean, I have a good idea, but it's not a particularly good comparator for me. I suspect OP was being facetious as that's a few London-centric posts we've had.

Seriously? Well OK I guess I could have just said "same as the UK". The variation is not that big! But if someone is thinking about how to dress for a weekend in Paris then a weekend in London is a pretty natural comparison! More so than "a weekend in the British Countryside".

FWIW, Edinburgh is actually a closer comparison to Paris temperature wise. But wetter.

UpMyself · 29/12/2025 15:29

@owlpassport , London in January. Cold but not freezing, probably won't rain, but it might. If it does it will be a drizzle. If you get a downpour you'll be soaked to the skin. If you are somewhere exposed, you will feel the wind. Temperature something between 2' and 9'.

Shops and cafes will be hot. Museums and art galleries will be neither hot or cold. Outside will be cold.

Where do you live op? Any place in the UK at this time if year is cold and possibly wet. You would need a winter coat anywhere you went in the uk between November and at least the end of Feb. There's a good chance of snow. Same applies to Paris. Did you not look at the average temperature for Jan when you booked Paris?

bookmarket · 29/12/2025 17:17

I've a short/hip length charcoal wool coat that can be dressed up or dressed down. It's warm. Loose enough to put a big jumper or scarf under. If it's really cold I wear good thermal long sleeved tops. It goes with jeans or smart clothes. A brown/camel colour might be more versatile though. I think I bought mine from vinted but it is from Land's End (not exactly the height of fashion but it's just a classic coat)

acountrymile · 29/12/2025 17:23

This is really nice in real life and not expensive on Uniqlo... Perhaps not as smart as you need for Paris. I am really pleased with it, buttons instead of zip, warm, boxy but not too short. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E479616-000/00?colorDisplayCode=08&sizeDisplayCode=003

That's a nipping to the offy coat.

I wear long wool coats on city breaks, not this one but if my choice was between a sensible cagoul, hiking trousers & walking boots, i know which i'd prefer to be sightseeing in Paris in (hint, not the hill hiking gear!)

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 18:36

Depends how much your sightseeing is being inside galleries and looking chic in restaurants.

Not in the UK.
And the temperature did not dictate the time of my trip.
But I still need a walking around coat, paris is 3 days. I need it for my every day.

My type of sightseeing 100% includes art galleries, musuems, famous sights (but having been to Paris many times it would not include special visits to Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe etc as i've seen them) but definitely walking to explore various arrondisements, nice cafes, bars & restaurants, perhaps live music at a jazz bar or the opera house depending what's on etc

I don't love too much shopping on trips but will pop into perfume shops & bigger department stores such as Le Bon Marche if in the area

I have zero interest in doing any of these things in hiking gear.

Depending on the weather i wear long wool / cashmere coat, cashmere beanie (can fold into my bag when not needed), scarf & gloves & good trainers (if not raining) or flat leather laced boots if wet - currently have Grenson laced ankle boot.

I take a leather cross body bag for datyime & a smaller bag for evening if needed

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 18:56

Oh, I see! We were at cross purposes. I agree with you no hiking gear and terrible puffer jackets like that RAB one.
