A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

Do people really go sightseeing in coats like this?

No I prefer shopping at Iceland in mine.

Bearlionfalcon · 29/12/2025 21:37

I know what you mean - I usually wear a puffer coat but recently found it just looks wrong if I’m going out for the evening or somewhere smart etc- so I just bought this in the sales for the sort of scenario you’re describing. It comes in grey and black and I went for black. It’s not cheap even with 40/50 per cent off but honestly it looks GREAT on. It’s thick enough, and super comfortable, not at all stiff and heavy like most wool coats are especially through the shoulders (the shoulders on this are dropped/ soft which makes it feel way more up to date in my opinion). I really recommend it!

I wear long wool coats on city breaks, not this one but if my choice was between a sensible cagoul, hiking trousers & walking boots, i know which i'd prefer to be sightseeing in Paris in (hint, not the hill hiking gear!)

It doesn't have to be either or. I don't own hiking trousers and walking boots, not do I look like I am dressed for an evening out during the day. I just hate feeling cold and damp and would dress according to the weather. I would also ban umbrellas for anyone under 5'7" as I hate being poked in the eye by the pesky things.

Hephebe · 29/12/2025 23:02

That's gorgeous, @Northofthebordermum. Does it whiff a bit after years of getting wet? The rose colourway is lovely.

Redwinemaestro · 29/12/2025 23:55

Brands like Barbour should have what you're looking for

I don't like the fur trimmed coat shared by a pp (& i suspect was shared tongue in cheek given the price) but if my choice was that or a raincoat, i'd choose the wool coat.

My wool coats do not have fur trimmings.

I'm curious what you'd wear on a January city break so?

BlazesBoylansHat · 30/12/2025 00:01

I hate Barbour & that whole look so would never wear that & especially not to Paris. Or any other city.

Doteycat · 30/12/2025 00:05

No barbour is out. Not me at all.
I am however thoroughly enjoying the rabbit hole of searching. Ive been on clothes websites ive never heard of.
I soooo need to up my game!

How about this one?

https://www.hobbs.com/product/amalie-puffer-coat/0225-3279-9322L00-BLACK.html

Warm, water resistant, stylish enough not to spoil a nice outfit. And it's on sale!

(The hood is detachable, if you prefer umbrellas, although it gives a nice touch of faux fur.)

Really tempted to get one myself, actually. Just reslised I very much need a decent Walking Around Coat (this should totally be an official category) for cold and possibly wet weather.

Not furry but to me this looks like the perfect jacket, and lots of colours so hopefully one that speaks to you. I don't have one but I've been tempted for a while but no reason to get one really because it's very much like other jackets I've already got! 😂

I have that in navy and it's gorgeous. Casual cut but smarter than a cardigan and great with jeans.

But in no way warm enough for Paris in January. OP would freeze in that.

God forbid that anyone might like to plan outfits or invest in someting new to wear to wear on a trip to a beautiful city.

Just wear any old coat you have knocking around op 🙄

On a serious note - why bother commenting on a style & beauty thread if that's the sum total of the contribution?

Is it a British thing? Or a mumsnet thing?

I have a warm and waterproof coat and a lovely warm wool jacket which looks really smart. If I was 100% certain it wasn't going to rain I would wear my wool jacket.

But as it is January and could potentially be damp, and as pickpockets are a problem in Paris, I would wear my waterproof jacket which has inside pockets and would keep me dry. I hate faffing around with umbrellas.

I'm curious to know just how smart the general public really are in Paris. I expected to see a lot of beautifully dressed people in Rome when I visited, but that was not the case.

NigelForage · 30/12/2025 07:42

As I always say and post about these major European cities, they just rammed with tourists who are all dressed any old clothes
You're not walking down beautiful Boulevard with everyone gasping at your barber jacket. You're just a tourist in a big international city.

It's got great reviews too! Repeat purchasers. And it's 100% cotton. And under £100.
It's bloody perfect I think (I don't need one, I don't I don't...)

It is nice but it won't work if it's freezing cold.

SwaningAroundHereandThere · 30/12/2025 08:02

Most of the young and trendy women in London wear midi length wrap -over or edge to edge wool coats in camel, navy or grey, or down coats. Whistles had a lovely one in grey reduced in the sale.

Jackets are too cold for winter.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/12/2025 08:17

The Hobbs one bores me, but in a more interesting colour it would be a good investment.
