A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

Paris will be COLD in January.

The Harris Tweed coat is fab but not warm enough.

Peacoats are old fashioned and unstylish in my opinion.

I just saw your budget. Honestly I'd buy the Brora. It is really beautiful. Then pop into Superdry and buy a more practical, cold weather jacket, that you can wear.

The Brora?

The Harris Tweed swing posted above!

@Doteycat

My grey Monki coat has arrived!

I flipping love it - although not as much wool blend as they advertise 🤔 But what can you expect for £45x

It’s oversized style which means I can wear loads underneath if needed.

I know puffers etc will be warmer, but I generally run hotter than most.

It's got great reviews too! Repeat purchasers. And it's 100% cotton. And under £100.
It's bloody perfect I think (I don't need one, I don't I don't...)

100% cotton is not a jacket for january.

Plus it looks really really really cheap.

Parisians make an effort, it’s the tourists who usually don’t.

Because when they wake up and its raining, they can open their wardrobe and take their raincoat. When its windy and cold, they can take their wool coat. They can choose whatever footwear they need for the day. They can accessorise whichever jacket they choose.

Tourists have to squash what they can for all weather eventualities into a 10kg carry on case and hope for the best!

I said this earlier and was told that tourists can't be bothered.

My wrists would be freezing in that very pretty coat @soupyspoonposted if I wore it in Paris in January.
Wristwarmers would ruin the stylish effect as would whatever long sleeved garment I would wear underneath.
I need my wrists warm to be warm.

Most of my gloves are long for this very reason, you wouldnt need wrist warmers just nice long suede lined gloves

read the Trustpilot 1 and 2 stars review before not ordering.

This is lovely but, the internal second collar throws me off. How do I wear a jumper or anything with a collar then? A threesome of a collar? That would bring me out in an anxious rash.
Or maybe I haven't a clue.

I did wonder about who they were as Ive never heard of them and was a bit suspicous but when I did a search they came up as being fairly legit? I wonder if its one of those chinese companies masquerading as something else.

It looks like something one of those china dolls that every charity shop has three of would wear.

It’s a lovely coat (apart from the gold buttons) but it’s neither a dressy coat or a casual coat. You could only wear a long sleeved top or a shirt with it or it would look bulky. It is nice though would you wear trainers or boots with it 🤷

"a threesome of a collar" 😂😂😂

You're not wrong

mdinbc · 01/01/2026 21:07

I would go for a quilted coat with a bit of room underneath for a jumper or cardigan. Something like this. I do like a lighter colour rather than the ubiquitous black. You can wrap a lovely scarf for extra style.

I wouldn't go for a long wool coat; they are just so heavy and cumbersome to carry if you are indoors.

I like this one as well.

GlasgowGal2014 · 02/01/2026 10:08

I've been to Paris a couple of times in late January, and it was bitterly, bitterly cold. And this was 20 odd years ago so I suppose the climate may have changed but it was the really dry continental cold, so not at all damp. We covered a lot of ground and I was well wrapped up but still cold (we had to do lots of stops in cafes to warm up and I even remember standing over grates in the pavement where warm air was coming up from underground). I would have been wearing a medium length wool coat, thick tights under my jeans/trousers and multiple warm layers under my coat. I wouldn't recommend a jacket, especially if you are going to be outside for any length of time and would definitely go for something a bit longer!
