A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

What in heavens name has my nationality got to do with a coat?

Paris is Baltic in January! I’m always buying Uniqlo sleeveless gilet things when I go because I keep forgetting how cold it gets. I look awful in puffas too so wear my “city” coat with layers.

This thread is bonkers. Jersey jackets, tweed jackets and cardigans being recommended for Paris in January.

So not just me thinking that !

Absolutely nothing. I was simply curious. There are loads of wee familiar idiosyncrasies in your writing.

alondonerabroad · 30/12/2025 19:08

Also, someone mentioned here that in the tourist areas there might not be much effort made but I found that Parisian women did make an effort, there was something so stylish about what they were wearing, even if it was a puffa style or a high street car coat. The scarves, the hairstyles were so chic.

I think "Dotey" is an Irish term as well (disclaimer: I'm not Irish, so don't really know about this. Also my own usernames tend to be random gibberish, so I'm reluctant to read too much into them!)

Parisians make an effort, it’s the tourists who usually don’t.

Maybe becaaue visitors have a limited luggage and dress for practicality and all eventualities?

Yes, which is why I spotted the words/phrasing etc.!

I can vouch for a car coat btw, I got a gorgeous one recently.
It's definitely not warm enough for winter though!

gotmyknickersinatwist · 30/12/2025 23:42

@Doteycat what do you think of this one?

Doteycat · 30/12/2025 23:52

Warm, not long, good for transitioning to spring, pic shows it in beige which isn't very nice but it's nicer in the green...
M&S jacket

Too short for me!

Doteycat · 31/12/2025 00:16

Pretty but I fear I would be a sweaty Betty in it.
Budget for a good coat, up to 500e I reckon
A jacket id like to come in under 150 ish.

I want the Brora swing one
But it's too expensive and I can't have it .
Loving the thread though!

Same!

God forbid that anyone might like to plan outfits or invest in someting new to wear to wear on a trip to a beautiful city.

Just wear any old coat you have knocking around op 🙄

On a serious note - why bother commenting on a style & beauty thread if that's the sum total of the contribution?

Is it a British thing? Or a mumsnet thing?

It’s a mumsnet thing…you’re not allowed to want to be stylish or follow fashion or mention ‘being on trend’ god forbid 😁
and don’t ever try and ask advice on buying an expensive handbag…only tkmax allowed
But for some reason all those followers are on the style & beauty section

Or maybe because they just can’t be bothered / have zero interest in stylish clothes. I commuted weekly from London to Paris for 6 months pretty much living out of my wheelie case but still managed to look presentable.

I'm not sure I agree. Does a weekly commute mean that you were working rather than doing touristy things?

I like to look stylish, but need to be practical as well. I have a long wool coat, but it just isn't as warm as my waterproof coat, and I really struggle with feeling cold. I also can't bear umbrellas and am risk averse so prefer something that has a zipped inside pocket. Yet I still don't want to look like I haven't thought about my outfit.

Oneforallandallforone · 31/12/2025 14:58

Paris will be COLD in January.

The Harris Tweed coat is fab but not warm enough.

Peacoats are old fashioned and unstylish in my opinion.

I just saw your budget. Honestly I'd buy the Brora. It is really beautiful. Then pop into Superdry and buy a more practical, cold weather jacket, that you can wear.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/12/2025 17:52

We are going to Bologna in January. I plan to wear my long Rohan puffer coat as we will be outside a lot. Scarf and gloves too and my chunky boots. I would rather be warm and dry. Cold and wet doesn't say stylish to me, it says underprepared!
