Keep or return dress - dabs eyes

I bought a dress. The reviews say it can be worn in a few different ways, and they always look more fancy in the pictures. Also, it’s not a very fancy shop.

Anyway, got it home and tried it on. It fits beautifully (could do with an extra 1cm round torso but it’s fine) and it is stunning. However, it’s fancier than I expected and I’m not going anywhere I can really wear it. I’ve a few Christmas things but they’re mainly pub etc. it’s also just a Christmas dress. It’s beautiful green velvet (I bought it before Princess Kate worn hers ;) I’ve a “do” in Feb, but will green velvet work post Christmas?

Keep, or return. I fear it may just languish in my wardrobe.

Send it back.

I think we need a photo or a link.

It's a beautiful dress but if you won't wear it much send it back.

Coffeeishot · 21/11/2025 08:57

Can you not just "own it" and wear it to.the pub ?

Douchey · 21/11/2025 08:57

I disagree. I had a bridesmaid dress pictured in my mind. Its a personal choice but id see myself wearing that hosting (or attending) dinner parties or Christmas, a nice lunch out etc. I dont think green velvet is only for Christmas, any time over winter would be fine. And its quite a classic cut, so I imagine it lasts years to come. I vote 'keep'.

InLoveWithAI · 21/11/2025 08:59

I'd wear that to the pub! But I'm not a jeans kinda person!

40coats · 21/11/2025 09:04

I would wear that dress everywhere!
It doesn't look that fancy in the pictures.
I would wear it christmas day, to the pub and for meals out.
It looks like a winter dress as opposed to a christmas dress.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 21/11/2025 09:04

I think the buttons make it over fancy. IF you love it, you could change the buttons for plainer ones?

LittleMonks11 · 21/11/2025 09:06

Dry your eyes and keep it! I have beautiful occasion dresses and tops I wear over and over - don’t wear them much so they feel like new each time. Wear it to the pub!

TheCurious0range · 21/11/2025 09:08

It's beautiful!

Bruisername · 21/11/2025 09:16

I like that dress and I think you could dress it down or up. If you feel good in it then keep it

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 21/11/2025 09:26

Send it back... Boden is so frumpy...

MarmaladeSandwichUnderMyHat · 21/11/2025 09:29

It’s gorgeous! Please keep

spottyear · 21/11/2025 09:33

It doesn’t strike me as Christmasy.
I don’t actually like it though, it looks like my mothers dressing gown.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 21/11/2025 09:34

Does it suit you? Do you feel good in it? If yes and yes, keep it! It's a beautiful dress and I'd wear it at the drop of a hat on the very flimsiest of excuses. 💚

Freesiapleaser · 21/11/2025 09:34

That's a normal day dress. Wear with everything dress!! Id wear it to work with flats, at the weekend with coloured tights and docs, with black tights / boots, with sparkly tights for Christmas and in spring bare legged or nude!

Literally everything!! (I have good style but it ain't Mumsnet style!)

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 21/11/2025 09:36

Lovely dress that isn't overly dressy, despite the buttons. Definitely keep if you love it, I'd wear that to all sorts of places.

soupmaker · 21/11/2025 09:36

Now I’ve seen it. Still send it back. You’re not sure enough about it to keep it. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Doggymummar · 21/11/2025 09:39

It's quite an ordinary dress, beautiful but doesn't stand out in any way. A classic. I barely go out but I would wear that anywhere, carol concert pub, fancy dinner friends house walk in nature. It's a go anywhere piece.

W0tnow · 21/11/2025 09:42

You say it fits beautifully, and is stunning. Do you love it? Then keep it. If you wear it twice a year in the next 20 years, it’s easily worth it.

tinageta · 21/11/2025 09:46

It is a beautiful and versatile dress. Don't send it back! Change the buttons if you want to tone it down.

Largestlegocollectionever · 21/11/2025 09:49

Love the dress - but the way you describe it thought it would be an evening gown.
id wear this for a smart work day! I’d also wear for events etc - but not for any formal evening event as it’s a day dress.

I don’t think it’s a Christmas dress at all, just a nice winter dress. I also don’t think it’s “fancy” but totally get that if someone is usually a jeans and a t shirt person for example, it might feel fancy,
