Keep or return dress - dabs eyes

I bought a dress. The reviews say it can be worn in a few different ways, and they always look more fancy in the pictures. Also, it’s not a very fancy shop.

Anyway, got it home and tried it on. It fits beautifully (could do with an extra 1cm round torso but it’s fine) and it is stunning. However, it’s fancier than I expected and I’m not going anywhere I can really wear it. I’ve a few Christmas things but they’re mainly pub etc. it’s also just a Christmas dress. It’s beautiful green velvet (I bought it before Princess Kate worn hers ;) I’ve a “do” in Feb, but will green velvet work post Christmas?

Keep, or return. I fear it may just languish in my wardrobe.

Send it back... Boden is so frumpy...

Wow !

EmotionallyWeird · 21/11/2025 09:56

It does look very wintery and I don't think I'd wear it in February. But I do like it! Can you create some opportunities to wear it? I personally think you could wear it in the pub with boots, an interesting scarf and maybe a warm underlayer if you need one. If you go to a carol service, it would be perfect for that (with the same sort of additions). Or arrange to meet a few friends for coffee/lunch/a drink and actively suggest that you all dress up a bit for a change.

I've got a green velvet dress that is much more fitted/obviously party-ish and I usually find excuses to wear it two or three times in the winter!

IsItTheWeekendYet25 · 21/11/2025 09:59

I ordered a green velvet dress a couple of weeks ago too. I don’t have anything planned to wear it to either but I just love it so it’s not going anywhere. Might arrange something suitable just so I have an excuse to wear it or I might just look fabulous on Christmas Day! Either way, it makes me happy so it’s staying. If you love yours, I think you should do the same.

BusterGonad · 21/11/2025 10:01

It's beautiful. Keep it.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/11/2025 10:05

It will be winter in February. You can absolutely wear it anywhere and everywhere, but…
£190 is a lot of you don’t think you’ll wear it everywhere.

And will it be too warm for most indoor public places? I find venues overheated so dress lightly.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 21/11/2025 10:06

Keep. And I say this as someone who hates Boden.

id wear with flat biker style boots and a leather jacket for pub/days out and heels to dress up:

wear the dress

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 21/11/2025 10:06

It’s beautiful! I want one!

I'd wear that to the pub! But I'm not a jeans kinda person!

Exactly this. Never wear jeans only dresses and that would become my go to a going out winter dress for me, theatre, pub restaurant, meal with friends. There’s nothing remotely ‘Christmassy’ about it to me?

Hollieandtheivie · 21/11/2025 10:08

I'm Team Keep

StarlightLady · 21/11/2025 10:09

I love my dresses. I don’t see this one as overly Christmassy. And l’d wear it to the pub. Only exception perhaps would be what l call a “geezer’s boozer”. But l wouldn’t go there anyway.

My bigger concern would be is it washable?

Edited so it makes sense 😀

KateBushAgain · 21/11/2025 10:09

It’s a nice versatile winter dress.
The only slight reservation I have is that the velvet has that shiny quality that looks a little cheap , which is even more irritating when it’s not a cheap dress .

Are you me? 😀

youneverwalkedinmyshoes · 21/11/2025 10:31

I'd keep it, the dress is beautiful and I'd wear it to the pub, at home hosting or visiting friends. Will make you feel feminine and beautiful. But do not ask me I love a good excuse for a nice dress

schoolsoutforever · 21/11/2025 10:42

I'd probably wear that to work on occasion and certainly yes for nights out of whatever type. Lovely dress - if you like it wear if!

The main reason to return it would be that it’s viscose and a bit shiny. Do you essentially want this dress, instead?

Kemi Telford Green frock

The Boden one is far nicer.

notawittyname1954 · 21/11/2025 10:51

I think you could wear that dress any time during the winter. Its lovely. And it is versatile. If you love it and it makes you happy keep it and wear it to the pub.

Namechangerage · 21/11/2025 10:58

I’d wear that to the pub?!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/11/2025 10:59

I’d need to see it outside of the marketing photos. Can you post a photo of you wearing it?

What on earth have they done to that poor model’s legs?

blackfriday1 · 21/11/2025 11:04

Keep! It’s gorgeous and you could wear it for many years to come over winter and the festive season. It’s my favourite colour. If you can afford it then just keep it!

PerishinglyCold · 21/11/2025 11:06

Do you look good in it?
Does it make you feel like a million dollars?
For those reasons alone keep it, treat yourself and ignore the standard attire for the pub. Arrange to go somewhere special in it in the meantime. Now’s your chance!

lohpetite · 21/11/2025 11:06

I really don’t like that shade of green, and the buttons are too fussy. I do however think it would work in February. If you love it you could change the belt and buttons for a fresh look next or in future years. It doesn’t have to sit in the wardrobe :)

heartofsunshine · 21/11/2025 11:11

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast my thoughts too! I have this dress and it is lovely on, much nicer than that photo!

As for Boden being 'frumpy', can the whole concept of frumpy fuck off? Men never have this shit to deal with do they?

LighthouseLED · 21/11/2025 11:12

I agree it could be a winter dress rather than a Christmas one.

I’d keep it but replace the buttons as i think they're horrible - but it’s a lovely dress otherwise.
