Cherry Red velvet skirt

I’ve just bought this skirt from next.
I LOVE it but now realise that at 50 yrs old I have zero idea what to wear on top.
Any suggestions-both dress up and down?

Can I get away with wearing it through the day ‘dressed down’?

i have lost all confidence in knowing what to wear that’s suits my age - menopause has buggered my ability to style myself!

I have a red velvet skirt similar to that and for casual styling I treat it like my jeans- t shirts, long sleeved t shirts, casual shirts and jumpers on top. Pink and red together is having a moment, a shortish boxy pink jumper could look fabulous. Flat boots on my feet (or trainers if it’s the right weather).

For something dressier I would probably want a black evening top of some kind, or another neutral colour like pale gold could also work. And a dressier shoe with a heel, or metallic brogue?

I think white or cream might risk looking a bit overly Christmas!

I find it very hard to dress down velvet. I agree with the jumper idea but the biggest hurdle will be the shoes.

What about with a cherry red camisole top, similar to this. with a cropped cardigan.

I do like that, altho the cherry red is a bad fit on the model. I don’t think cream would work. And the models shirt is too fuss, I agree that pink would be better. For dressing down , suede trainers, for dressing up, the pink skirt has the model in velvet kitten heels.

Cream knit will look too Santa. I would wear it dressed down with a navy gansey style knit with sleeves pushed up - or something like this possibly - and solid but not too chunky boots.

I like velvet for the daytime - I find it a bit heavy for the evening.

I’d order the top worn with it for a start, and some strappy low sandals it’s a nice look.

dressing down may be tricky without looking like you’ve nipped to the shops midway through getting ready for your Christmas do.

the chocolate brown has a model wearing a T-shirt and boots so I suppose it’s possible to not too Christmassy but ultimately I’d have such a statement colour for special occasions

Hmmm That colour is way off though plus it looks like you’d risk getting electrocuted from static. Cropped cardigans leave them in the yesteryear pile….

I’d wear DMs or similarly industrial/ workwear/ biker type boots. With a dressier fabric I think you can go properly informal if you want to, because the contrast creates interest.

I think a red velvet skirt would be very difficult to pull off as casual wear. That’s being sold now as it’s Christmas season.

it doesn’t look good on the model, it’s ill fitting on her and makes it look thin and cheap, hopefully it’s better in real life and fits you better, I would not wear it with white, you will look like Santa Claus. I would wear it with a black silk top, or a deep burgandy to contrast.

I love it too. I would dress down with docs and a long sleeved Tshirt or fine knit jumper, probably in black.
To dress up I would wear a top in satin, lace or sequins, maybe a gold or champagne colour and heels or sandals. There’s another thread about a sequin jumper, I think that would work with this skirt.

I would go with a fine knit black jumper, like the white one above but I'm not sure about that colour combo. Or a black t-shirt. Maybe a navy silk shirt for going out. Shoes I would go for boots, preferably knee high or at least past the hem of the skirt. Not sure DMs would work because it's so straight, you need something neater.

I love it but agree, but hard to wear. I've just sent back a velvet top because it felt too much.

I’d go with leopard as a neutral and wear day and night.

I have a skirt similar colour but in corduroy. I often wear navy on the top half which works well 🙂

I’d go with a white/cream long sleeve top and a longline waistcoat, or a leopard top of some variety. Personally do not love black with red.

I have a soft spot for the chocolate brown version of this.

I don’t love black with red either, but at Xmas it is way better than white with red velvet, which is Mrs Santa Claus and not what anyone should be aiming for.

True I was trying to daytime. I wouldn’t do Mrs Santa impressions too close to Christmas in an evening. Daytime maybe with a grey scarf/shoes/something might tone it down. It is a gorgeous colour and skirt but have to work hard to dechristmas/daytime it.

Personally I don’t think you could dress that down. It looks like evening wear to me.

there are plenty of velvet things you can, and velvet is making a huge resurgence now. I literally just bought a lovely sort of tan colour velvet blazer. I think the issue with this item is it’s red, and a long red velvet skirt is basically crimbo. The other colours are easier to dress down.

Sorry that's really not a nice skirt. I agree with others it looks cheap & nasty. It's not quite a slip skirt & not quite a nicely fitting tailored skirt. If it was a satin or a black velvet it could be dressed down with say a cashmere jumper & even trainers. But red velvet is really tricky.
