Cherry Red velvet skirt

LunaDeBallona · 18/11/2025 22:03

I’ve just bought this skirt from next.
I LOVE it but now realise that at 50 yrs old I have zero idea what to wear on top.
Any suggestions-both dress up and down?

You came on here asking for advice saying you're confused about what to wear these days & people have told you what they think. There are many of us saying the same thing, that the skirt isn't the right thing to wear. I'm 61 & I've been through that stage of feeling not quite right in anything. It wasn't my intention to upset you so I'm sorry, but telling you the truth is not a bad thing .

LunaDeBallona · 20/11/2025 01:19

Nobody else has said it looks ‘cheap and nasty’.
Just you.
Ive had a shitty shitty year, red is my favourite colour and you have utterly spoilt this for me with your horrible comment.
There was no need for you to comment at all.
I hope you are proud of yourself.
I think you are cheap and nasty.

Thank you so so much to everybody else who commented.
I’ll be sending it back so no need to think about what to pair it with.

Gosh, that’s a bit ott op.

There are not ‘many of you’. Thats a lie.

Gosh, that’s a bit ott op.

Not really. I asked for advice for what to wear with it in the style and beauty section.
I didn’t ask anybody if they liked it, or what they thought of it.
For someone to come on and say it’s ’cheap and nasty’ is really horrible and utterly unnecessary.
It was the first thing I have bought this year that wasn’t practical- it’s a bit frivolous and bright.
But it’s going back now as I wont be able to wear it without wondering if everyone thinks it’s ’cheap and nasty’.
Ive spent the year battling demons and just wanted something pretty that wasn’t black for Christmas.

That’s a shame @LunaDeBallona as I said I love my red velvet skirt and actually I disagree about being able to dress it down. As I said above. I think it will look great with a nice jumper and boots, or a gold top and dressy shoes. Really versatile and if it makes you happy, wear it and be happy 🙂

Op, this is an anonymous forum, no one could guess you’ve had a crap year or this was the first thing you’d bought for fun. People were just responding on the skirt itself, no one could guess just how important it was to you. I also said it looked cheap on the model as it looked thin and Ill fitting on her and hoped it looked not like that in real life.

if you just wanted something nice to wear for Xmas, then this skirt fits the brief, but you also asked how to dress it down, which indicated you wanted more use out of it than just Xmas. If it’s just something pretty for Xmas, it’s perfect, and you’ve had lots of suggestions.

Honestly though, someone not liking the skirt and thinking it looks cheap etc isn’t a personal attack on you, they were just talking about a skirt with no context.

Also if money is tight, habe a look at vinted. I don’t know your size, but here for example is someone selling the same skirt brand new for half the price.

There are several saying the skirt looked ill fitting on the model & hoping it looked better in real life.
Again, it isn't my intention to upset you & I'm sorry you've had a bad year 😞

@LunaDeBallona This isn’t my skirt- I can’t find that because it’s a couple of years old- and mine is a darker red and in velvet. But it’s this kind of shape, with a tall waistband (like yoga trousers) and a flared skirt. As I said, treat yours like jeans- try it on with t shirts, jumpers, shirts, boots… see what you like it with. Your skirt will be great with a chunky jumper, an untucked brushed-cotton checked shirt, a band t shirt, a simple vest top in summer.

I have a skirt very similar to this. I haven't dressed it up yet, but have worn it with a band t-shirt and chunky black boots.

I agree.
This is an anonymous forum and nobody knows who they are replying to and what sort of life they lead.
But I asked for suggestions of what to wear with it- not opinions on what people thought of it.
It doesn’t look great on the model -I can’t even find that horrible looking seam on my skirt- but again, I simply wanted some tips of what to wear with it, I didn’t ask for opinions of it.
When a woman says she’s struggling to style herself -which surely indicates a bit of a confidence issue -to say the item she has chosen is ‘cheap and nasty’ is cruel and incredibly insensitive.

I love the shape of that.
I bet it’s really comfy and very flattering.
I think when I said ‘dress down’ I meant not glittery/sequins, not ‘wear to Tesco’ dress down!
I’ve had some great suggestions but it’s going back I’m sad to say as I’ll never feel anything but anxious in it now.
Years ago my friend said to me “It doesn’t matter if people say you look nice, if you don’t feel nice then don’t wear it. You will be uncomfortable all night”.
It will never feel nice now because I will be constantly wondering if people think I look cheap and nasty.

EDIT -I love the ‘treat it like jeans’ suggestion. If I find something else I like I’m going to do just that. It’s a great tip. Thank you

I think we just need to agree to disagree op, I didn’t read it as so catastrophic. For all we knew you’d bought 100 new items rhis year, and were simply struggling with styling a red velvet skirt. The poster has also apologised twice now, and I’d recommend graciously accepting as they clearly didn’t mean any harm never mind to be cruel. For me cruel would be a personal insult. Not about a skirt.

i think everyone now understands rhe importance of this skirt to you.

I think if you're 'struggling to style yourself' then the very worse thing anyone can do is tell you something looks nice when it doesn't. Plus if you're not sure how to dress it up or down you have to question whether it's a right skirt for you?
You're now totally overreacting ... as people have said it wasn't a personal attack.

AlertCat · 20/11/2025 10:05

@Cantonet leave it now, eh?

Findingmypurposeinlife · 20/11/2025 10:08

As a dress down, I'd actually wear it with a nice fitted denim jacket/shirt and a fitted top underneath. You could even get away with trainers as a whole combo. That red would look striking against the denim blue. As a dress up, I'd probably swap the denim for black. Just because it doesn't look great on a model, doesn't mean it won't look fantastic on you!
But anyways, if you like, it don't send it back. Have fun trying on different bits with it! It feels so good when it finally falls into place and the outfit comes together! Squirt a bit of your fav perfume when you are happy with the finished result and own it!! Go strut your stuff and don't care about the haters 🌸

Mumwithbaggage · 20/11/2025 11:25

Bit late if you're sending it back but I'll be wearing a very old velvet skirt from Monsoon way before youngest (nearly 22) was born with a biker jacket and T shirt/fine v neck sweater. Maybe trainers. I'm 61.

Well, I say I'll wear it like that. Being me, I'll try it on, decide I look daft and change into something more safe and boring. It's really tough OP to be confident in creating your own style. I'm working on it and I hope you are too.

Calliopespa · 20/11/2025 11:37

LunaDeBallona · 18/11/2025 22:27

Can I get away with wearing it through the day ‘dressed down’?
Would the jumper have to be white @MiddleChildX
i have lost all confidence in knowing what to wear that’s suits my age - menopause has buggered my ability to style myself!

No it wouldn't - and in fact I am not a fan of red and white as an outfit. It's too Father Christmas.

I'd probably go for a print with it.

Calliopespa · 20/11/2025 11:41

Fevre · 19/11/2025 13:09

Cream knit will look too Santa. I would wear it dressed down with a navy gansey style knit with sleeves pushed up - or something like this possibly - and solid but not too chunky boots.

I like velvet for the daytime - I find it a bit heavy for the evening.

This sort of sleeveless knit would look lovely with it op.

It isn't cheap and nasty op.

Nasty was a totally unnecessary word.

It's a rather nice red and velvet always looks cosy.

ContentedAlpaca · 20/11/2025 17:57

Op it's a lovely colour and I think it looks lovely. I've got things that I've loved but struggled to find things to pair them with. Some items of clothing can have just about anything thrown on when them and look great and some are really finicky to accompany in terms of colour, fit, dimensions, fabric and style. This may be one of those items.

I've had a look at the same skirt in other colours on the website for ideas and I don't think next have managed to team any of them up very well.

drhf · 21/11/2025 06:17

I wear my cherry velvet skirt (which I’ve had for donkeys years) with an oversize beige jumper for casual, a contrasting velvet tee (pink or gold) for dopamine dressing, a satin blouse for work and a sequin trim shirt for Xmas. I might wear it today in fact.

Thanks OP!

TheKeatingFive · 21/11/2025 14:02

Christ, why are posters such pr*cks?

I think it's lovely OP. To dress down I'd do a black polo and long black boots. Personally I'd find that a lot easier than dressing up. I struggle with more formal tops. I'm not a blouse person.
