I’ve just bought this skirt from next.
I LOVE it but now realise that at 50 yrs old I have zero idea what to wear on top.
Any suggestions-both dress up and down?

The thing is...you like it. It doesn't matter what anonymous arseholes on Mumsnet think. And if it does, then don't ask for advice. Social media is often pretty unkind. Protect yourself.

I hope you keep the skirt you love. The colour is gorgeous. I'd wear a black top with it. And maybe black boots. But I know sweet fanny adams about fashion. At my age I just wear what's comfortable...and camouflages my (numerous) flaws. 😂

Christ, why are posters such pr*cks?

I think it's lovely OP. To dress down I'd do a black polo and long black boots. Personally I'd find that a lot easier than dressing up. I struggle with more formal tops. I'm not a blouse person.

I said a black top and black boots too. I'm surprised anyone else thought the same. My fashion choices always feel suspect. Though no one has ever called me on them. As yet! Maybe they say it behind my back...in which case good luck to them. 😁

I would wear something gloriously bright pink - some sort of beautiful camisole-type top, or gold

Isabelle70 · 22/11/2025 08:42

I like the red but for me I would feel too Christmas in it at any other time of year. How about one of the other colours? The chocolate looks gorgeous and might be easier to style as a
more neutral colour?
in fact makes me what it in the chocolate and I never wear brown!

Don’t send it back @LunaDeBallona , don’t let the opinion of a random unknown and condescending PP making ignorant twattish comments put you off something which is bringing you joy. You don’t know how that person dresses, you could be 🤨 and 😂 at their clothes taste- luckily we all have different styles. Loads of PPs have said how lovely it is, and frankly Next wouldn’t be selling skirts unless they had good appeal! Ie to many people- and others have similar too. The dress down styling through a caramel or camel jumper, chunky and slouchy, with a bright white high neck crew t shirt underneath with chunky boots is inspired. I can totally see that, great suggestion upthread. I have a Christmas market next weekend, and I think I’m going to go for that look for it and would wear in autumn the same too, maybe late summer outside events too

Thebigonesgetaway · 22/11/2025 10:20

I think I would send it back if you want to get more wear out of it rather than just Xmas. It’s not a skirt you can wear year round.

if your happy to just wear it Xmas season, then keep, but I think you can buy a lovely red skirt you can wear year round, and you’d get more use out of. Or buy similar on vinted for a few quid and then buy something else nice to wear with it.

I was going to suggest caramelly/ oatmeal-ly/ marly sorts of browns with this too - especially in a knit, which could be bulky or more fine merino and fitted sort of look.

I think the distinctness of the red can sometimes work well with something a little more muted, and those colours still have a Christmassy/cosy feel without screaming Mrs Christmas or Elf.

I'm am quite a conservative dresser op, but even I can understand it is nice to have something a little joyful at Christmastime. I usually do this with a hint of sparkle because that's my limited colour style, but this is a nice cherry shade of red and I think you should keep it and enjoy it. Some reds CAN look cheap but to me this one doesn't.

I think it’s a lovely skirt, OP. It’s a shame you’re sending it back. I think it would look lovely at Xmas with a chunky black high neck knitted jumper and some ankle boots.

FranticFrankie · 22/11/2025 14:42

What about the sparkly Whistles 'Annie' jumper that was recommended on here recently OP? In different colours; it looked lovely. Quite fancied one myself.
I think a PP bought one from Vinted?
Enjoy your skirt 😘

FranticFrankie · 22/11/2025 14:46

Just to add- a few years ago I bought a green lacy a-line dress from MnS.
I loved it and thought it looked great. Wore it for a Christmas do and was happy until someone said 'Oh Frankie - have you come as a Christmas tree?'
Wish I'd worn bauble earrings!!! 😂😂 They would have set it off nicely

Sherlockgirl · 29/11/2025 20:03

Hi just to say I came on to look at the suggestions. I read your post, looked at the skirt and thought that’s lovely, I’ll buy that. It’s comfy, a gorgeous colour and I’ve kept it. Sorry you sent it back, I’ve got some lovely nice jumpers to go with it, and may even try pink as someone has suggested. Sorry the post wasn’t great for you but just wanted to say you do have good taste. It fits lovely and a gorgeous colour. Hope you find something you are happy with. Xx
