The tiara in our local auction house (I linked above) sold today for £23000.

I went to the viewing on Monday (and we bid on a few things - not the tiara!). The woman in charge of the jewellery was very friendly and helpful. She says it's most likely it will be broken up and sold separately as brooches, which seems a shame.

That is a shame, however, there's not many opportunities to wear tiaras nowadays, sadly.

I've probably said this before, but back in the Dark Ages (80s) when I was at college, I had a friend who used to put on a ballgown (look, it was the 80s, it was Cambridge, it was normal to have one) whenever she felt a bit moopy. So you might go round to her rooms to find her weepily doing the washing up in Marigolds and fuchsia taffeta. Or, as on one memorable occasion, she turned up for a group supervision that we shared in black, floorlength satin, with opera gloves. I always admired that approach.

It was before the days of Claire's Accessories, but if she could have got hold of a cheapo tiara, she DEFINITELY would have.

What are you talking about?! There’s going to Sainsburys, walking around the library, taking the bins out…the opportunities are endless!

I like her style, although I'm sorry to hear she felt so low. It sounds like she had a good strategy, though.

I would prefer Catherine’s dress to be about three or four inches shorter. If I had her fabulous legs I’d show them a bit more. I got married in an exact replica of her shoes in 1982! On second thoughts that makes her shoes a replica of mine. 😂

For some reason the image you conjured up was Paula Yates, if I remember correctly she had a pink short ballgown maternity dress.

Camilla, Sophie and the Duchess of Gloucester all attended a dinner for the Rifles last night - and dressed up properly for the occasion. Camilla wore a gorgeous red velvet gown, ruby earrings and a serpent pendant. Sophie went for midnight blue velvet with a glittery belt (I'm surprised by how much I like her look - I'm rarely keen on outfits that depend on a belt for their effect) and the Duchess of Gloucester was in green (can't see much of her outfit, but green gemstone jewellery to complement it). Camilla also had an embroidered black jacket covering her shoulders when she made her entrance - you can't see it properly in the street lights, but from what I can see, I like it - decorative but not gaudy and the embroidered detail is offset by the simple design of the jacket itself.

I love the colours - ruby red, dark blue and emerald green. Very striking. I can't see any details of Birgitte's dress, but it's a lovely colour.

I thought all three of them wore glorious gem colours in sumptuous fabrics at this event. I do love Christmas type colours.

Cassiope · 28/11/2025 16:54

They really did the Rifles proud, I thought.

Maireas · 28/11/2025 16:57

Now that would have been a perfect tiara occasion!

Oh lovely dresses, I love Sophie's dark blue and sparkles.
Sleeves on Cams red velvet look interesting too and Birgette's looks like a lovely colour pity we can't see more.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 28/11/2025 18:42

I think Camilla’s lovely coat may be a gift to CIII from somewhere like Pakistan years ago. It’s too big for her of course, but looks great over her shoulders like that. I think she’s worn it before.

What lovely outfits for the Rifles event - all of them look very elegant.

Some lovely images of Edwina - she had some beautiful pieces of jewellery. Also, some lovely evening gowns.

It was indeed

SqueakyDinosaur · 29/11/2025 22:02

There were several - I don't know if they were all EM's. There were a pair of bracelets and I think a necklace too.

It was oddly shocking, because you sort of don't expect precious stones and big setpieces to be fun - overwhelming, yes, glamorous, yes, impressive, yes, but not fun. And they are!
