How old is too old...

... for short skirts? I'm 46 and over the last year I've lost almost 7 stone. For the first time in my life, I "have the legs" for shorter skirts, but I worry that I've missed the boat as far as that goes now. I'm not especially young-looking because I'm growing out some ill-advised permanent hair colour at the moment and have a lot of grey roots! Does grey hair go with minis, even if the legs are sort of ok?

I’m 40 and wore shorts on holiday.
back at home though I’d probably not have worn those particularly shorts.
My legs are nice, I’m not worried about what they look like, but I just dress a lot more modestly at home than I do on holiday 😂

Mooploop · 31/10/2025 19:28

No such thing as too old. Wear whatever you want and enjoy it!
And screw anyone judging based on age. Their problem, not yours!

Femalefootyfan · 31/10/2025 19:34

Well done on losing 7 stone Op, such a great achievement,

I’m just over 60 and I wear skirts that are an inch or so above the knee, I think if your legs are decent, why not if you feel like you want to. I particularly like wearing a shorter skirt with thick tights and boots in the winter.

I’m not bothered if others think I shouldn’t, I feel comfortable wearing such skirts but then I’m very short so I rarely wear skirts or dresses that are a few inches below the knee as I feel they make me look even shorter, although I could be wrong. I lost 3 stone so that gave me the confidence to wear short skirts.

DonaldJohnTrump · 31/10/2025 19:37

Weeelll, I'm 79 years old and still wear 'em!
But only round the house (the bigly White one) of course!

CrackingOn50 · 31/10/2025 19:38

I’m a year older than you and wear short skirts sometimes. Fuck it! I’ve got a cracking pair of legs and quite glam plus a resting bitch face that challenges anyone who dares disagree

Well done on your weight loss btw

Thelankyone · 31/10/2025 19:39

Well Claudia winkleman at 53 was wearing a mini on traitors last night and rocking it, but she wore with am over sized jumper, thick tights and chunky flat boots, so I think it depends on how you style it. Avoid anything just above the knee, wear with thick tights, don’t try to be sexy in it ie heels or tight fitting jumpers etc,

on th4 grey hair, I’m afraid I don’t think half grown out colour is a good look on anyone, so I’d have my hair fully coloured grey if that’s the look you wish, or recolour to the colour you wish. But big roots is never a good look

PanderBare · 31/10/2025 19:40

Look on the label for an age range.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/10/2025 19:41

I’m 51 and I wear skirts an inch or so above the knee, love the look with thick tights. Happily wore shorts this summer too. I’m a size 10-12 after losing 4 stone and I’m definitely making the most of my new figure.

I don’t care what anyone thinks, I’m happy.

Primulanimbula · 31/10/2025 19:41

47?
Really, 47?
At 74 I might consider it.
Go for it!

How short?

Same age as you.

I’m 45 and wear short skirts still. But there are certain rules I go by. In the winter I wear black tights with miniskirts, but in the summer I would wear bare legs (but always fake tan) but I wouldn’t wear tight skirts with bare legs, it would be a short loose or floaty dress. I’m a size 10.

Zebracat · 31/10/2025 19:51

I had a baby at 23, and afterwards needed new clothes. I worried for months that jeans would be inappropriate for a mother to wear. That was 1982. Times have changed and thank fuck for that. I’m thinking about buying a cord mini skirt . I’m 66 now. It’s not age that’s holding me back, just not sure I’ll wear one enough. Please please don’t let other peoples possible reactions hold you back. We get one life.

willowstar · 31/10/2025 19:53

I am 51 and wear really short skirts. I have fantastic legs. I recently lost 3 stone and got really fit. For the first time in MY LIFE I feel good about myself and am enjoying clothes. I wear anything I like. I spent my 30s and 40s absolutely miserable trapped in a body that didn't feel right and a marriage that wasn't good. Life is short. Wear the skirt.

Chinsupmeloves · 31/10/2025 19:53

I'm in my 50s and wear short skirts or dresses sometimes with black tights and boots. It's just my style and I like it! Not mini short but couple of inches above knee. Xxx

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 31/10/2025 20:41

I wouldn't wear it with bare legs because I have loose skin around the tops of my thighs, nor go any shorter than about three inches above the knee, so it would definitely be a winter look only. I look nothing like @EssenBee for example! Way too pale and untoned for that!

@Thelankyone yeah, I'm very conscious my hair looks terrible. Unfortunately I had a red colour put in and it just will not be covered up or stripped, so I'm having to grow it out. I'm planning to get it cut short as soon as the grey bit is long enough to take a style by itself. Hopefully not too much longer to wait, and colourful hair scarves are doing a lot of heavy lifting for me at the moment.

@ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop , mine's at the stage where my hair looks dirty. I'm going to wear a beanie everywhere, I think.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 31/10/2025 21:11

I’m happy to wear short skirts with opaque tights. Wouldn’t wear bare legs though 🙈

PanderBare · 31/10/2025 21:18

Me neither. my legs are too crinkly.

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2025 21:22

I'm 61, tall with good legs. Today I've been wearing a cord skirt that sits a couple of inches above the knee, with tights, ankle boots and a chunky jumper. I've been collecting compliments all day at work, so I reckon it's a good look for me. I wouldn't do bare legs though.

JaneOfGaunt · 31/10/2025 21:53

Wow. Im 50 and wear short skirts a lot, sometimes with fairly tight jumpers, and with bare legs in summer. Also wear short shorts all summer for working out in. Didn’t occur to me that that wasn’t allowed at my age!

MYOB12 · 31/10/2025 21:57

49 and got loads of short skirts. Got short shorts for my Christmas do. Never too old!

Yeah, when I was 47 it had already been too late for miniskirts some years ago.
Of course OP can do what she likes, but she did ask for opinions.

I think midi skirts are much more current right now, But you need to be taller to really pull them off. Knee length or just above is really dated and a bit eighties. Really short skirts I think can be worn in hot weather say on holiday, with bare legs, and I do think Claudia rocked hers with thick tights last night on traitors and looked v current and quire elegant.

I personally think the issue comes in when you try to make is sexy or don’t make the whole outfit work, then it can move to tacky, but you really don’t see many women in mini skirts now a days, I actually can’t remember the last time I saw someone in one, well other than the whole love island wannabe clubbing vibes of late teens early twenties. It’s all wide leg trousers, and midi skirts.

knee length or just above is the most dated look, but I suspect it’s difficult if you’re not very tall or your body shape doesn’t favour current styles.

If I wear a short skirt it will be just above the knee because I'm short
and too old for minis (imho). I don't care that much if it's fashionable. Midi is also difficult when you're short because they go almost to the floor.

I want to buy one of these plastic/faux leather midi skirts to protect me from the rain. As mentioned in another thread, choosing your clothes for practical reasons makes you 'frumpy'...

Gwenhwyfar · 31/10/2025 22:26

And Claudia goes around with her fringe in her eyes so I don't much care what she wears (no offence to her).
