Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

Fuck off with your ‘old ladyish’ and ‘will I look like a granny on a school pick up?’
You'd hate me as I’m both.

And me.
And I happily wear Seasalt, the quality is far better than M&S, the sizing is consistent and many of the patterns are striking and different.

Uniqlo is so utilitarian. I was in there last week and didn't buy a thing.

This!! There is a large one near my office but sadly nothing in it I’d ever actually wear.

Q2C4 · 26/10/2025 08:22

Sea Salt socks are very good.

Sadza · 26/10/2025 08:33

The quality is really good but I think you need to be careful. A couple of well chosen items mixed with other brands can work. Their prints aren’t great and the dresses do have a granny style, just the wrong length or cut.

Giggorata · 26/10/2025 08:45

On a good day, Seasalt prints can approach Gudrun, but you have to pick carefully..
I have a couple of tops and a dress which I wear when I'm volunteering in the community shop, as I think they have the Archers vibe, rather than the granny.

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 09:10

Ha! I buy their socks! Larissa blouse has its uses in a non granny (silly!) print! I’m old enough to be a granny and I find the prints mostly too staid for me. I can recognise them a mile off - like Boden. Their rain coats work though!

HistoricGeek · 26/10/2025 09:13

Excellent quality, lasts for years.

PrissyGalore · 26/10/2025 09:18

Some things are nice-a plain olive skirt gets compliments. I always get compliments on the Larissa shirts as the style suits me-I often wear with my Soeur cardigans. I’d never dress head to toe Seasalt and steer clear of a lot of the prints. Dawson Pick cardigans are lovely cut but wouldn’t buy another as they bobble a lot. I would’ve loved to have bought a cool parka for Winter but ended up buying a Janelle as they do petite sizes which more on trend manufacturers don’t. So just visit one and be judicious in what you pick and wear and you’ll look great.

Meadowfinch · 26/10/2025 09:22

I've bought one sundress from SS which was lovely & well made. Most of their things, I think are fairly shapeless.

It's worth checking their site for the occasional nice thing.

Doggymummar · 26/10/2025 09:27

I was surprised recently to find how size inclusive they are. When I was as size 25 26 it was one of the places I could get nice quality clothes in good fabrics ( not much choice when you are larger) then I found they do all the regular sizes too, and I have three pairs of their jumbo cord culottes which are so comfy in a size 10/12. I sell Preloved on eBay and I've not sourced any tops smaller than a 14 but I do find the cotton to be very stiff. I have some saying back 20 years and they are still beautiful. It always surprises me when I sell them they go to people in Cornwall and Devon and the Scottish Highlands, I think it's a coastal vibe. I'm in Brighton so it fits with me too.

LoisGriffinskitchen · 26/10/2025 09:29

I love prints and patterns and even sometimes the twee floral ones so I quite like SeaSalt. I only ever buy from their outlet though.

I also like Popsy for some of their prints. Got a gorgeous print recently from them. Retro looking almost Orla Kiely type pattern,

Great for work.

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 09:29

@Doggymummar ? Seasalt are a Cornish brand! The coastal vibe is their thing and always has been.

Jollyjoy · 26/10/2025 09:33

I’ve had a few nice stripe tops, but I bought a Janelle raincoat a couple of years ago on the strength of recommendations here, but felt it really aged me and the only other people I saw wearing it were a lot older than me. I do think it’s for more mature ladies.

Floisme · 26/10/2025 09:42

Why?

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 09:44

@Jollyjoy Absolutely! My 30 something DDs wouldn’t go within a country mile of Seasalt! Us older mums do but I wouldn’t wear Seasalt in London.

And my 25 year old DD has a Seasalt skirt and rocks it.

I’m fascinated why you wouldn’t wear perfectly normal clothes “in London”. London isn’t anything special or unique in terms of fashion or style.

Try a Plant Hunter instead. There was a thread about waterproof coats a while back and quite a number on there (including me) had tried Janelle & Plant Hunter and found PH far more flattering. On paper they look similar but in reality they're not.

notacooldad · 26/10/2025 10:23

I've heard that Uniqlo sizing is difficult though. in what way.
Im a size16 and can buy Uniglo in the UK no problem- not so much in Japan, where I felt and probably looked absolutely huge!!

OK im old! However I feel ok in the Janelle, especially with boyfriend jeans and Lanx boots. Its quite a flattering look on me. My niece us 31 and has the same ciat and it hasnt 'aged' her at all.

The Plant Hunter is great, I have 2.

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 11:09

@CrocusVase Well I usually go to the theatre or Royal Opera House in Mondin or I meet DDs for a very decent meal out. I’m an age to be mumsy but I don’t like that look at the Royal Opera House! I don’t really see anyone else wearing Seasalt at Michelin starred restaurants either. If we’re helping to move furniture and going down the pub in London - possibly! I just prefer to dress for my destination and not wear my old dog walking Seasalt. In Cornwall I might!

RestlessSparrow · 26/10/2025 11:19

Are you tall or short OP? Personally I have never found anything that looks good on my 5'2" frame from places like Cos etc and the drab colours don't work on me, so I have to shop (carefully) at places like Seasalt if I want to wear dresses. Mostly I have given up on them in winter and wear skirts/trousers instead.

RoostingHens · 26/10/2025 11:48

The problem with most shops is they go with whatever colour that has been determined should be ‘fashionable’ that season. You can then tour shop after shop and they all have the same limited range of colours which invariably make me look washed out. One of the good things about Seasalt is they have a proper range of colours so I am much more likely to find something to suit from a colour perspective.

Nitgel · 26/10/2025 11:58

I like their knitwear and linen. It's a nice brand imo. Not mad on Some of their prints but it's a shop I look in. Socks are ace.
