Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

I got a lovely flattering dress from there. It is like most shops - a few pieces that will flatter and look lovely and others that won’t/will look frumpy. I do like the colours.

Bettine · 25/10/2025 16:32

It's okay. Some pieces are okay. I always lump FatFace and Seasalt together because of the prints/cut/fabrics. My sister is 55 and LIVES in FF and SS. I've got a brilliant Seasalt coat that I've had for about 15 years, but otherwise I never see anything I love there.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 25/10/2025 16:37

I am an outlier then as the prints are what I love about Seasalt, generally not the floral small patterns but the abstract, geometric ones.
Prefer to buy in the sales though!

Alltheburpees · 25/10/2025 16:38

Fuck off with your ‘old ladyish’ and ‘will I look like a granny on a school pick up?’
You'd hate me as I’m both.

RoostingHens · 25/10/2025 16:40

There is nothing intrinsically frumpy about their patterns. If young people wore them you would complain the pattern are too young for older women!

I think lots of people put those two in the same bracket, but I think they're quite different. I have quite a few Seasalt pieces but have never found anything I like in Fat Face.

Purplebunnie · 25/10/2025 16:52

I bought a beautiful dress from Seasalt blue/green pattern and although I am guessing I was older than you when I bought it I had quite a few compliments on the dress from complete strangers because it hangs well and was very flattering.

I eventually started wearing it to work and it wore well despite the constant use

Souredgrapes · 25/10/2025 17:03

I’ve worn sea salt since I was in my 20s ( they had their earliest shop in Penzance where I lived ) , I remember walking in and feeling I could buy and wear every piece in the shop but stopped buying it in my 50s (even with the fantastic blue light discount ) . I love the coats and jackets which I do still wear but everything else just seems to age me sadly .

StressedandAngry1 · 25/10/2025 17:07

Some things are nice but if you're not confident about your style you could easily make mistakes. Uniqlo however is pretty much idiot-proof (my brilliantly honest friend told me I was dressing like a granny and should switch to Uniqlo - she was right).

Happyjoe · 25/10/2025 17:08

I have a couple of their tunics from a few years ago as well as a deep pink raincoat. Nice quality and fit well and do seem to wash well. I find their sizes a little hit and miss though and their more floral stuff a little bit too much for me.

I’m a granny, as in above post, and I wear Uniqlo. Sorry.

RavenT · 25/10/2025 17:09

I buy occasionally from SS, and as with others, only buy plain stuff (tops, not dresses). Quality is always very good. I agree re sizing, it is not as generous as it used to be. I'm busty and always have to size up to be comfortable.

Themaghag · 25/10/2025 17:11

It's a nay from me - it's all a bit 'pottery teacher' for my taste. Having said that though, some of the plain tops, jumpers and trousers are okayish, but the dresses are dire - they look like they are made for women who never want to have sex again under any circumstances whatsoever! Why not just swap the leggings for jersey or ponte trousers, which everyone sells, and which look a lot smarter and more flattering on most grown-up girls?

But the question is, do you look like one? I'm also a granny too and wear Uniqlo - love the jersey barrel trousers and the merino and cashmere sweaters - but I do my absolute damndest never to look like one!

I'm actually a granny too, my friend just didn't think I needed to dress like one.

What’s a granny supposed to look like?
So much casual ageism here.

Floisme · 25/10/2025 17:24

I’m on the cusp of old age but not yet a granny so I’m not sure if you want my opinion or not but here it is anyway: Some of their knitwear, T shirts and linen tops can be quite good. I dislike their dresses and all their prints and I don’t know what they do to their trousers but I don’t even bother trying them on any more. You’re welcome.

WeaselsRising · 25/10/2025 17:24

I am over 60, and a granny, and I love Seasalt. So does my 86 year old mother AND my 18 yo DD.

Like someone who dresses at Uniqlo it seems.

StripedPillowcase · 25/10/2025 17:25

I like Seasalt, have a blue denim dress that gets compliments all the time, and the same dress in dark green cord.

Quite a lot of their tops and dresses have round necks, which can make bigger boobs into a rather matronly bust, so I have to pick and choose quite carefully.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 25/10/2025 17:25

I love Seasalt, but there is an awful lot of snobbery about the brand on mn.
In agreement with others here - as with other brands, like Fat Face, White Stuff and Boden, you need to cherry pick. Personally I find their flowery frocks are frumpy and I wouldn't ever wear one, they'd make me feel like Miriam Margolyes's slimmer sister.
But their Sailor shirts and Easel t-shirts are great, the waterproof coats are amazing and I have a couple of Seasalt pinafore dresses that get me endless compliments. Their linen dresses are also lovely and wash well.
My style is arty and I'm definitely not old ladyish!

They also do proper sales - I picked up a Plant Hunter coat for £32 in their outlet recently, so I think the people who are blinkered and proclaim it all to be frumpy are really missing out!

Chewbecca · 25/10/2025 17:30

I think they have some good materials and they do a lot of trousers in their Short range which is unusual these days.
Not a fan of the floral dresses though.

SeaAndStars · 25/10/2025 17:31

Seasalt is always such a lovely shopping experience. I love their denim stuff and Tshirts. The quality is really good and I love the natural fabrics rather than oil based material which I'm trying to avoid.

I live in their Ashphodel cords and jumpers in the winter.

Yeah actually on reflection you're right, my bad. I should have said that Seasalt mostly reads as not stylish or modern whereas Uniqlo is the opposite. I shouldn't have brought age/granny into it.

Owly11 · 25/10/2025 17:36

Nay. Generally awful quality and bad styling.
