Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

I like their knitwear and linen. It's a nice brand imo. Not mad on Some of their prints but it's a shop I look in. Socks are ace.

Yes. That pretty much sums it up for me. I'm currently wearing one of their striped tops. I have three of their less loudly patterned dresses as well.

The problem with most shops is they go with whatever colour that has been determined should be ‘fashionable’ that season.

I agree @RoostingHens especially at this time of year. I walked into and straight out of Mango the other day as it was just a sea of various shades of brown. I suit jewel colours and autumn is the worst time of year for me to shop for clothes.

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 12:16

@RoostingHens I never find that at all. There’s a vast choice at M&S or John Lewis for example. Most colours in most things!

I often spot a style of something I really like in M and S and then find that it only comes in lime green, brown or orange. Some of their items do come in a wide range of colours, but most don't.

I suspect that is because you suit the colours that are generally deemed fashionable. I don’t. Eg. It is not just red, it is the tone of red.

@RampantIvy Yes some one colour options but no one can make everything in all colours of the rainbow. I always find great clothes in M&S now. They’ve totally turned a corner and you have the other brands too. I absolutely love their wide jeans and cords, merino pullovers, cashmere and classic trousers. No lime green or orange as far as I can see. I think you are looking at a very narrow selection of clothes @RampantIvy It’s certainly not what I see. I’ve bought a great double breasted maroon coat this winter and much of their knitwear is great and on trend with Argyle and Fairisle knits. I suggest you filter out colours you don’t like. I tend to filter in ones I do like. I can get quite a lot from M&S at the moment and just got great bronze silky trousers for festive season plus a grey scarf cardigan (not to wear together) but the cardi goes well with black cords or my pinstripe wide wool trousers. I tend to like classic looks though with a nod to what’s in this season - the preppy looks suit me so I’m happy this year.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/10/2025 12:30

Hmm, just looked at the website to remind me what their pieces are like. Not for me, is my considered opinion, lol. Some of the knit wear looks ok, but the prints, and dress lengths are twee-central. The pic of a tunic and leggings sealed the deal for me, just no. Clearly this thread is full of people who do like the brand, we are all different after all, so go for it op, if you are one of them.

As with any brand, you cherry pick. I never wear anything printed, nor am I a tunic and leggings wearer, but their long sleeved t-shirts and knitwear pieces come in gorgeous classy colours like sloe, mahogany, olive that I never seem to find elsewhere.

Maroon, bronze and grey don't suit me.

I do have a lot of M and S clothes BTW because I buy when my colours are in stock. I expect they will get the jewel winter colours in soon, then I will find more things that suit me. I have their wide leg jeans, a bright red cashmere jumper and various brightly coloured supersoft jumpers.

I also tend to wear classic clothes that don't date, with a nod to what's in as well.

LessOfThis · 26/10/2025 12:46

The cuts are flattering, but the patterns are annoying. I wish they would do more plain things. I do buy the less offensive items in the sale. I’m just 40, but have some items that must be coming on for 10 years old.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/10/2025 12:48

I used to like it until I realized my (not very fashionable) 82 yo MiL was wearing it too.

sorry MIL. It’s put me right off unfortunately.

@Jollyjoy Absolutely! My 30 something DDs wouldn’t go within a country mile of Seasalt! Us older mums do but I wouldn’t wear Seasalt in London.

What?

Newmeagain · 26/10/2025 12:56

chipsticksmammy · 25/10/2025 14:05

No, it’s all old lady.

Try Cos, Arket or &Other Stories and go with natural fabrics. I have loads of comfy dresses and outfits from all three for working from home.

Can we please cut out the ageist crap please?!

Seasalt are not exactly cutting edge in their designs, similar to Boden and other brands. But they appeal to some people and it’s nothing to do with their age.

suburburban · 26/10/2025 13:22

I used to wear Boden and when it existed Racing Green. I also liked Laura Ashley and Principles when it stood alone

I agree some of the patterns are too much but good basics and some more subtle patterns or plain tops. I like the less muted colours

don’t like the trousers as they don’t fit

footwear was good and accessories

Jollyjoy · 26/10/2025 13:24

Floisme · 26/10/2025 09:42

I do think it’s for more mature ladies.
Why?

I think it’s their main clientele and their target demographic. Of course anyone can wear what they want! But op asked if sea salt is aimed at older women and I think it is. For me, wearing my coat out and finding all my bedfellows to be decades older than me, led me to not feel good in it.

suburburban · 26/10/2025 13:26

My dd who is 30 likes Seasalt and she buys some tops in the sale and she had a dress which looked great on her. Also both dds wore the trellis jumpsuit

suburburban · 26/10/2025 13:29

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 26/10/2025 07:56

This is true. I find their dresses are usually cut for the short waisted apple shape, whereas I'm very long waisted with hips. I have the same problem with Weird Fish and White Stuff - the waistlines are under my bust and everything is too short.

Edited

Yes I’m the same and tbh most manufacturers cut their dresses high on the waist,

I’d love to know some who don’t

I kind of agree but I’m almost 60, however if prints etc are your vibe then it’s fine: I’ve seen younger women absolutely rocking print dresses.

i do feel like I’m the target age but not sure why when I see younger folk in SeaSalt, Joanie or Popsy looking great.

I've tended to get on better with Fat Face and Toast for dresses, but it could just be because they tend to offer more generous A line shapes than Seasalt do and those are the ones that suit me best.
Belted dresses or coats are a nightmare from anywhere though, because the belt always hits the widest part of my ribcage not my waist. I'm not even particularly tall so it is annoying that everything is so short bodied these days.

I'm in my 40's and may have once been horrified to see someone decades older wearing the same thing. But recently I was in a shop and two older women, maybe in their 60s/70s, picked up something I'd just been looking at - and I'm ashamed to say I bristled a little.

But then I overheard them talking and they were so knowledgable about design, cut, quality, colour and then I noticed how stylish and unique they were. I looked out of the shop window and saw a group of young people all identically dressed in sludgey coloured lycra. And I thought "I am bloody flattered that these stylish women looked at the same thing as me".

stclementine · 26/10/2025 14:05

As someone of Cornish heritage I desperately want to love seasalt…..but I can’t. It’s not so much for older women because I’m 51, but because it’s so frumpy and dull. That said, most of my stuff comes from M&S so I guess I’m not as cool and stylish as I think I am 🤣

Yes fair point - I think others have covered it though. It’s the cuts, the prints, the shapes. Other brands like toast are probably worn by mature women but a range of ages because they are just cut and designed more stylishly? Although others have said that fat face are in the same bracket demographic wise as SS - I don’t see them that way, it’s all subjective.

I'm 68 and I love Seasalt - I only buy the 96% cotton/4% elastane dresses. Fabric feels great and doesn't crease for some reason! They do have an ebay outlet where you can save a lot of money, especially on the jewellery. Enjoy!

Thanks for the eBay heads up I didn’t know that.

Some of their items are really good. I love their Larissa shirts.

Gutted there are no jute bags in their collection at the moment as they made fantastic presents.
