Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

Again, will somebody please tell me, as a granny, what should I look like?

suburburban · 25/10/2025 20:13

I’m a granny anyway so I’ll carry on with Seasalt

love the tops, crinkle Larrisa shirts are fab

the fabrics are good quality

I loved the linen skirts for the Summer

I also like the bags and the socks

i buy my ds the men’s socks

lemonraspberry · 25/10/2025 20:16

Their socks are great, some of their larissa shirts are very nice. Just pick and choose but, like white stuff, some of their patterns are a bit marmite. Quality is really good.

Yeah actually on reflection you're right, my bad. I should have said that Seasalt mostly reads as not stylish or modern whereas Uniqlo is the opposite. I shouldn't have brought age/granny into it.

It's so rare for anyone on MN to reflect and say, '...you know, I got that wrong - you're right, sorry.' I wish more posters did, it would improve countless threads.

Respect! Grin

I’m a granny and I love Seasalt (20% off atm!). I hope the mums just think that’s a well dressed granny picking up her grandchildren but I’ve seen their clothes on a range of age groups.
Great quality and lovely colours, raincoats are comfortable and breathable, horses for courses as far as colours and patterns go. Surely it’s a question of its appeal to you as an individual?
Staff are lovely and helpful, well staffed, assist on the shop floor and in the fitting room, a refreshing change to the lack of interest in many other shops.

Also have seats for the accompanying spouses who are often in tow😀

mamagogo1 · 25/10/2025 20:20

Just buy things you like. I mostly have Seasalt dresses for work because they are smart enough for customers arriving unexpectedly but still comfy. They vary quite a lot so buy prints you like

CrocusVase · 25/10/2025 20:24

I liked it about 10 years ago but since then their sizing has gone weird (it used to be massive, but predictably massive IYSWIM?) and I don’t like their most recent patterns.

I have a couple of coats from there I really like. I also liked their footwear but think they’ve stopped doing them.

In general I think they’re a shop where it’s better to have the odd thing from and mix and match with other brands rather than dress head to toe in them.

Umbilicat · 25/10/2025 20:26

I will ever appeal to you – I hate this idea that certain styles are “grannysh” - grannies can look any way they want these days. There’s also a fashion police idea that cool clothes are only monochrome Danish architect wear from Cos, Arket, Uniqlo Just had a look at Seasalt‘s website. There are some things I wouldn’t be seen dead in, but other things that are really nice and it doesn’t matter what I think anyway, you do you !

distinctpossibility · 25/10/2025 20:29

I am 37 and I like Seasalt because of the good quality and petite lengths. Disclaimer: Maybe I am channelling my inner granny 🙄since I've known some awesome grannies and would love to be one in future. Best items are the Hushing gown, the culottes, the Janelle and the rose trellis jumpsuit. I have a couple of the dresses but found the jersey ones a bit shapeless, their new range has some jersey dresses described as "waisted" which might be more fitted if you prefer that.

NotMeNoNo · 25/10/2025 16:07

It's not so much age as lifestyle. On average it suits people who like comfortable, colourful, good quality clothes, probably more country or suburbs than urban, not particularly trend led but they do have some items that are influenced by current shapes. Maybe for people who like the Toast or Gudrun Sjoden look but want more wearable everyday clothes.

Having said that I was talking to a relative last weekend and she described the town she lives in as having the "holy trinity" of Seasalt, Fat face and White Stuff, so perhaps that's where they fit in!

Add Weird Fish to the list and make it fab 4. I'm afraid I'm a more colour the better person and despair of the odd drab stuff at other places

Salome61 · 25/10/2025 21:20

I'm 68 and I love Seasalt - I only buy the 96% cotton/4% elastane dresses. Fabric feels great and doesn't crease for some reason! They do have an ebay outlet where you can save a lot of money, especially on the jewellery. Enjoy!

Alltheburpees · 25/10/2025 17:09

I’m a granny, as in above post, and I wear Uniqlo. Sorry.

I've heard that Uniqlo sizing is difficult though.

Have you found that to be the case? I do like a lot of the plain dresses I've seen of theirs.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/10/2025 22:02

Half my wardrobe is Seasalt. I have stripy tops from them that are ten years old and not showing any signs of wear. I do tend to steer clear of their flowery prints because I'm a size 20 and they make me look as though I've been wallpapered, but I like the abstract prints and their plain linens are wonderful and iron beautifully.

TheOGCCL · 25/10/2025 23:59

Seasalt is at odds with modern trends towards minimalism and coords tracksuits. Often as people get older they don't look their best in current trends, tend to have developed more of a sense of what they do and don't like and can look better in brighter colours (grey/white hair). Seasalt are plugging a definite market and I like the fact there is a lot of natural materials and durability.

TeaRoseTallulah · 26/10/2025 00:01

Such a lot of ageist shite 🙄

Quality is really good, as with any shop you pick and choose what you like.

BankfieldForever · 26/10/2025 00:04

Not for me. I’m 55 and wear my pyjamas all day sometimes but I’ve asked DH to have a word with me if I ever start wearing Seasalt (or fatface or white stuff). shudders .

That's a bit sad and rather ironic, given that Seasalt make beautiful pyjamas and robes. It is very much your loss.

Philandbill · 26/10/2025 04:10

Tagliateriroa · 25/10/2025 19:04

I don’t like it at all. It’s just not very stylish or classy. It’s very much comfy school teacher who doesn’t really care about clothes

That'll be me then. Lots of Seasalt bought second hand on Vinted so -shock - not even this season's 😮In my fifties and working with children with significant need. I have to have clothes that stand up to me spending some of my day sitting on the floor and around children who can't be careful with paint/ sensory tray contents but are also respectable for meetings. Why are people so judged by their clothing when they're clean but busy? Feels a bit shallow....

RampantIvy · 25/10/2025 18:19

Such weird attitudes as to what Old Ladies choose to wear. How dehumanising and ageist!

This happens all the time on Style and Beauty.
The fashion police on MN hate Seasalt, M and S, Skechers, Pavers, Rieker, White Stuff and FatFace. I'm not even sure if they approve of Uniqlo. They always recommend clothes that cost £££

And they use the term frumpy all the time.

…or dresses you could hold the circus in.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 26/10/2025 06:47

Thing is with regard to frumpy, that most of us don't only wear one brand, so it makes no sense. I wear Seasalt with Disturbia, which definitely isn't regarded as a "grannyish" label. So I think a lot of the anti-Seasalt is just reverse snobbery, because their basic tops, knitwear and waterproof coats are no more frumpy than those from any other brand, even if you don't like the print dresses.

muddyford · 26/10/2025 06:47

I don’t wear their dresses but their tops, trousers and knitwear are good quality, natural fibres, lovely colours and not too outrageously priced . Their eBay outlet is excellent value.

BreatheAndFocus · 26/10/2025 06:48

Yay. Seasalt is very popular round here and the majority of people wearing it are in their 30s and 40s, which I don’t consider old. The colourful coats are great, and some of the patterned shirts are fabulous. The patterns on them certainly aren’t aimed at older people or dated! They have some nice dresses and skirts too.

One of the good things about Seasalt is that their items are true to size. Once you’ve found your size, you can order online knowing it will fit. The quality of the material is excellent for the price too. Personally, I like the way they use a variety of models to model their clothes: different ages, different ethnicities, etc. I’d say their age range was maybe 30+, but having said that I saw a stunning young woman wearing a pair of black jeans and one of their striking shirts who must have been in her early 20s.

DesperateScran · 26/10/2025 07:45

Not a fan and I am in my fifties. Very ageing. I also feel the same about Jules, Fatface etc for the same reason. Give me Cos and Uniqlo over those.

NormasArse · 26/10/2025 07:49

I find their fit a bit boxy, which makes the clothes look frumpy on me. I recently bought a satin dress in the sale as a back up dress for a wedding. It looked gorgeous on the model- I looked like a man in drag with massive shoulders…

This is true. I find their dresses are usually cut for the short waisted apple shape, whereas I'm very long waisted with hips. I have the same problem with Weird Fish and White Stuff - the waistlines are under my bust and everything is too short.
