Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

I think lots of people put those two in the same bracket, but I think they're quite different. I have quite a few Seasalt pieces but have never found anything I like in Fat Face.

Edited

Fat Face do fabulous A-line linen pinafore dresses. I live in them teamed with a Seasalt stripey Sailor shirt and Oxygen Taff boots. Arty and stylish. FF cord shirts are also lovely, good quality and warm - I mostly wear them unbuttoned over a Seasalt checked dress. So yes, FF do have some wonderful stuff that teams well with Seasalt.

I have lots of cardigans from there that get many compliments and some lovely knitted dresses. I recently bought a really flattering rust-coloured dress from there. I'm in my mid-40s but have shopped there for a good ten years.

Vinted is great for Seasalt.

I’m a granny and I love Seasalt (20% off atm!). I hope the mums just think that’s a well dressed granny picking up her grandchildren but I’ve seen their clothes on a range of age groups.
Great quality and lovely colours, raincoats are comfortable and breathable, horses for courses as far as colours and patterns go. Surely it’s a question of its appeal to you as an individual?
Staff are lovely and helpful, well staffed, assist on the shop floor and in the fitting room, a refreshing change to the lack of interest in many other shops.

But the question is, do you look like one? I'm also a granny too and wear Uniqlo - love the jersey barrel trousers and the merino and cashmere sweaters - but I do my absolute damndest never to look like one!

What do Grannies look like? Perhaps like you and @Alltheburpees .
That is, individual women with different tastes.

both yay and nay . Some lovely pieces some awful pieces and patterns . I’d say middle class women not an age brand per say although I think the appeal would be 30+

I agree. I have found some absolute gems there, but not every time I go in.

I find the dresses usually too patterned for me, but sometimes they pull it out of the bag.

The quality, however, is excellent.

Seasalt def has a granny vibe. If you are a "bright young thing", this wouldn't matter, because bright young things look good whatever they wear. If you are a granny, it wouldn't matter, because the style is "granny-ish" if you are in between - avoid at all costs! You won't look like a bright young thing, and you might be mistaken for a granny!

Kleptronic · 25/10/2025 18:18

Uniqlo is so utilitarian. I was in there last week and didn't buy a thing.

So... I'm confused. What is "granny-ish"?

RampantIvy · 25/10/2025 18:19

Such weird attitudes as to what Old Ladies choose to wear. How dehumanising and ageist!

This happens all the time on Style and Beauty.
The fashion police on MN hate Seasalt, M and S, Skechers, Pavers, Rieker, White Stuff and FatFace. I'm not even sure if they approve of Uniqlo. They always recommend clothes that cost £££

And they use the term frumpy all the time.

Using the term "bright young things" makes you sound like Barbara Cartland 😂 You're most definitely a granny!

I think some of the stuff I nice, I like their knitwear. I wore a lot of it in my mid 20s when I was young enough to pull off grandma chic now I’m older I’m more careful in what I buy from them.

Tagliateriroa · 25/10/2025 19:04

I don’t like it at all. It’s just not very stylish or classy. It’s very much comfy school teacher who doesn’t really care about clothes

RedRiverShore5 · 25/10/2025 19:06

I like Seasalt, I especially like the Crackington trousers which look a bit like cords. I used to like the boots but they stopped doing them

School teachers need to be comfy. In an airless classroom with 30 teenagers, on their feet all day and up and down stairs for duties etc.
Don't knock them!

lifeonmars100 · 25/10/2025 19:29

Oh dear I bought a SeaSalt dress the other day it is an abstract print and I like it but what do I know.! I got it because I have had a couple of their dresses in the past (not overly floral print as that is not me) and was very pleased with the quality. I would not wear some of their stuff but I feel like that about many clothes sellers.

TeddySchnauzer · 25/10/2025 19:30

I recommend Weird Fish for comfy cotton dresses. Much nicer prints than Seasalt

Motnight · 25/10/2025 19:41

Alltheburpees · 25/10/2025 16:38

Fuck off with your ‘old ladyish’ and ‘will I look like a granny on a school pick up?’
You'd hate me as I’m both.

@Alltheburpees but don't you know that it is a heinous crime to be an old lady or granny?

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 25/10/2025 19:43

The dresses are like a mature popsy and that is not a good thing.

RaraRachael · 25/10/2025 19:49

I'm 63 and wouldn't bug their stuff as I find it a bit frumpy

Paaseitjes · 25/10/2025 19:52

Nay. They're the dress equivalent of leggings.

Boudy · 25/10/2025 19:53

I have been wearing Seasalt dresses for about 8 years. I like their fine needle cord ones that are lined. They make often have them in one colour and also patterns. I like the fit and the softness and the pockets. I also have a couple of denim and linen dresses by them. I am now 56..I don't think that is 'old lady'.

henlake7 · 25/10/2025 19:54

TBF you can usually find one or two nice pieces in nearly any brand.
But Seasalt really isn't my vibe, I do find it abit dated and boring.

Boudy · 25/10/2025 19:54

Oh and they wash really well and last for yonks!

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/10/2025 19:55

Granny chic, I dipped my toe and decided I’m too young.

CocteauTwin · 25/10/2025 20:02

I find Seasalt hit and miss - I don't like the word frumpy but some of their styles can look quite dated. However they also have amazing things, I love the plain linen dresses and trousers, raincoats and their barrel and wide leg jeans, all in petite sizes so I don't have to get them altered. They are a bit pricey but their quality is better than just about every shop on the high street and it's not full of overpriced polyester like so many other places these days. I like Uniqlo as well, but their quality doesn't come close. I'm 61, not a granny but I don't care if I look like one.
