Is this dress office appropriate ?

Mumsnet hive mind! I'm deliberating on whether to get this dress, but I would want to get a lot of wear out of it so has to be office friendly. I like it but there's some gold detailing which is making me wonder if it's too fancy for office wear. Would you wear gold in clothing in an office environment. I think i have the confidence to pull it off but it's a fine line between 'isn't she stylish' and 'god what's she come in today' and I don't want to cross it!

Rua Midi Jersey Shirt Dress in RED MULTI

Shop the Rua Midi Jersey Shirt Dress in RED MULTI. We've brought it back again. Love it for its super soft fabric, flattering midi length and the charming, muted floral pattern. A style that's always in bloom.

I feel like that's a "piece of string" question. What is your office environment like? High powered corporate - probably not. More laid back creative, SME - probably yes. Sorry - not much help!

Goldpanther · 22/10/2025 16:47

I really like it!

I think it could be very versatile too, would be great with a jumper over, or a tailored jacket, or styled with different belts/shoes.

I get that - it's quite informal - I have internal customers who I'm on familiar/friendly terms with, no external customers. Most people are on the casual side of smart casual, but no one would bat an eyelid if someone was dressed a bit more smart.

I just have a bee in my bonnet over the gold bits - and I've seen this dress in person and it is quite 'gold leaf' looking. Although I know that kind of gold can fade over time.

Well we're a fairly casual office and I'd wear it to work. When the weather gets colder, pop a jumper over the top and some boots... I think you'd get plenty of wear out of it.

mamagogo1 · 22/10/2025 16:54

I’d wear it with brown knee high boots

IDontHateRainbows · 22/10/2025 16:54

You guys!!! I just ordered it from next with next day delivery, so I can wear it at home and see if it grows on me. Maybe chance a teams call with it on before venturing into the office.

Yes, very nice, I’d wear that to the office. Can always pop a plain blazer on over the top too

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 22/10/2025 16:57

Perfectly appropriate. Might give your colleagues a bit of a migraine though. There's a lot going on, isn't there?

RampantIvy · 22/10/2025 16:58

You could wear that to where I work.

I work somewhere very boring and could definitely get away with it.
Our clothing standards are more "not too much skin on show". Ie, no vests, flip flops, very short skirts, cleavage, no exposed midriffs.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/10/2025 17:15

I would absolutely wear that to the office.

YourFairCyanReader · 22/10/2025 17:16

I wouldn't have even thought about it. Definitely office wear.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/10/2025 17:17

It would be over the top in my office - smart casual.

UnintentionalArcher · 22/10/2025 17:28

@IDontHateRainbows It’s fine for the office.

Irritatedandsad · 22/10/2025 17:30

Would be fine in any offices I have worked in and I have worked in quite a few.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 22/10/2025 17:31

You’re overthinking the gold detailing! It’s perfect for casual office wear.

Thunderytoday · 22/10/2025 17:36

I could wear it in my workplace.

MoominMai · 22/10/2025 17:54

It’s definitely office appropriate but I’ll be honest and say I’ve never seen anyone wear anything so colourful. Any office I’ve ever worked in are all quite causal wear and muted colours bar the occasional burst of colour of a bright top or jumper. I think if you wore it you’d get a lot of compliments though!

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 22/10/2025 18:15

Absolutely fine in mine [law]

Cougarintown · 22/10/2025 18:27

Yes. I saw it in next last week and thought about buying it for work.

GoldenPineapple15 · 22/10/2025 18:28

I have that dress and wear it to work . I am a teacher in a rather traditional grammar school . I wear it with knee high boots .

Owlcat42 · 22/10/2025 18:28

Would be fine anywhere I've worked (marketing, tech). Sometimes I wear a black wool tank top over something like that if I feel like toning it down a bit.

SirChenjins · 22/10/2025 18:29

It's the kind of thing I wear on my office days, so yes - absolutely fine imo
