Mumsnet hive mind! I'm deliberating on whether to get this dress, but I would want to get a lot of wear out of it so has to be office friendly. I like it but there's some gold detailing which is making me wonder if it's too fancy for office wear. Would you wear gold in clothing in an office environment. I think i have the confidence to pull it off but it's a fine line between 'isn't she stylish' and 'god what's she come in today' and I don't want to cross it!

Rua Midi Jersey Shirt Dress in RED MULTI

Shop the Rua Midi Jersey Shirt Dress in RED MULTI. We've brought it back again. Love it for its super soft fabric, flattering midi length and the charming, muted floral pattern. A style that's always in bloom.

Oh you tease, I was expecting something much more dramatic! It’s a middle aged mum dress from white stuff 😂 🤷🏼‍♀️

MaJoady · 22/10/2025 18:35

Would be absolutely fine in my corporate engineering company. We get everything from leggings and baggy jumpers, to bright pink power suits (as well as 80% of the employees in the man uniform of chinos and check shirt). I like it!

Comtesse · 22/10/2025 18:36

What gold bits?? They are tiny. I wear a dress to the office with some matt sequins - that’s fine. I work in a very big, very boring professional services firm. If they don’t mind sequins, this dress is A-OK!

GCAcademic · 22/10/2025 18:42

I tried it on as a potential work dress and liked it apart from the gold bits (they looked like they wouldn’t last more than a couple of washes and made the dress look a bit cheap).

Sagaciously · 22/10/2025 18:45

It’s very er, loud. You’d stick out like a sore thumb in my office wearing that.

henlake7 · 22/10/2025 19:17

The pattern isn't for me (i love patterns but for some reason I'm abit 'meh' about places like White Stuff or Boden).
But I love the style. It looks comfortable and you could dress it up or down.

MrsPinkCock · 22/10/2025 19:25

I am a lawyer - I’d stick a navy blazer over the top and 100% would wear that to work. It’s lovely.

I love bright colours and cannot stand stuffy grey/black suits.

TalkToTheHand123 · 22/10/2025 19:28

It depends on your figure. If you are slim it's ok.

WingBingo · 22/10/2025 19:29

Love it and I absolutely would wear that to work.

Focusispower · 22/10/2025 19:30

Could definitely wear it in an office. It’s a bit Kirsty Allsop for me but I’d not bat an eyelid if someone came in wearing it in my corporate office.

PaquitaSalas · 22/10/2025 19:45

Definitely fine in my workplace (secondary school). But you say you want to ‘see if it grows on you.’ I would recommend not buying if you feel lukewarm about it. Go for something you genuinely love. Hope you love it when it arrives.

With gold bits!

This be my fear....

It's lovely and I hope when you wear it it makes you smile!

I wouldn't ever wear it!. The print design is very large and overwhelming, it doesn't match where the buttons meet, and is a design you'd get very tired of soon.

Oh what nonsense. It's made up to a size 24.

It's a pleasant, smart casual day dress. It wouldn't raise any eyebrows in any office I've worked in.

goldenautumnleaves25 · 22/10/2025 21:00

It would be fine for us, dress code wise. only know your team and see if it fits jn - and if you want to fit in!
I work in a team where most people wear black, occasionally white. So this dress would stand out - not a bad thing, and nobody would mind the slightest thing, but you would need to be confident with it :)

playstupidgameswinstupidprizes · 22/10/2025 22:32

Looks like something a middle aged frump would wear, tbh. But it's certainly not inappropriate, it's fine, wear it if you want to. Maybe if you're young and hot you will be able to pull it off.

TheOGCCL · 22/10/2025 22:37

You’d look a bit OTT in my office and I also think as it’s so distinctive people would notice how often you wore it - oh Denise has got that dress on again. Though I guess it depends how bold the rest of your wardrobe is as to how much it stood out.

YehaaYessir · 22/10/2025 22:46

I think the dress looks lovely. If you like it you should wear it, I bet you'll get compliments.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/10/2025 22:50

You could definitely wear that in my office. Very versatile too. Go for it

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2025 22:53

It’s not my cup of tea, but I would think it appropriate in most office environments unless they were either very formal or particularly casual.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2025 22:56

IDontHateRainbows · 22/10/2025 17:05

They have the same style in this colour but I think the headache factor would be worse with the bright blue swirls . not as nice white stuff dress (IMHO)

Much prefer this one - it’s mainly black and white with a small amount of blue. I would wear this.

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2025 23:24

lovely.

Grammarnut · 23/10/2025 00:07

Nice dress. I wouldn't wear it with those boots - but that's a matter of taste. Office friendly? Depends on the office. If it's a laid back arty sort of place, then probably ok. Corporate style or a small business with a trad image? Not so much.
