What would you wear to travel to canaries in December ?

I’m flying to the Canaries in mid December and don’t want suffer in the heat travelling from the airport to our destination. I also want to be comfortable during the flight. We’re leaving the car in airport parking and getting the shuttle to the airport.

I was thinking a knee length sundress in black (sleeveless) with leggings under, cardigan or jumper and longish gilet with trainers.

What would you wear?

@NConthe , OP is travelling to the Canaries in mid-December.

OP - just a comfortable dress and trainers with a light jacket or cardigan is not suitable in the UK that time of year, and there's a lot of standing around when you get back to the airport. If you are coming back from somewhere warm, you will notice the cold.

I disagree. But then I don’t feel the cold. I also don’t stand around in the airport on my return! Regularly travel in winter

UpMyself · 22/10/2025 11:58

In what part of the UK are you and which airport do you fly from? When I fly there's usually a long queue.

The only time I have not felt cold coming back to the UK is when I've been to somewhere colder.

NConthe · 22/10/2025 13:09

Edinburgh last time, Manchester the time before. But as I said, I don’t feel the cold and so a dress and a cardigan is fine for me!

Just found it amusing that someone commented they don’t feel the cold and then went on to describe how they’re wrapped up in a pashmina, trench coat and socks and crocs 🤪

UpMyself · 22/10/2025 14:00

@NConthe , you're weird.Smile I don't really feel the cold, but I do if I'm not moving.
Queues at Gatwick or Heathrow tend to be horrendous.

wherewillwegoto · 23/10/2025 12:57

Flying from Manchester at 6 a.m. I think it'll be cold. Thanks for all the suggestions, very helpful.

Layers and comfy/stretchy.

im flying in dec also, long haul and if will be hot when we land, i am likely going to wear a wide skirt sleeveless midi sun dress with a slouchy over sized cashmere jumper on top, or I shall wear a pair of wide leg trousers, a cami top and the same sort of jumper, but I will be straight out a taxi into th4 airport.

canaries average temp in dec is 22 degrees, so not very hot. So I’d just layer up really,
by the way dress and leggings is seldom a good look.

Goatblu · 23/10/2025 14:03

When I go during the winter I wear the same as at other times of year but add socks and a thicker hoodie. Usually linen trousers, a vest top with built in bra, Birkenstock Arizonas. Maybe I should feel embarrassed about wearing socks and sandals through the airport but I don't. I put them in my bag when I've cleared security.

Could you wear a jersey lounge set and then put a faux suede unlined trench or shacket over it? Faux suede is great for travelling as it doesn’t crease

Hamiltonfan · 24/10/2025 07:23

I'm at the airport now flying to the canaries. Have a jumper and wearing a coat too. Freezing here.

UpMyself · 24/10/2025 07:24

Have a nice holiday @Hamiltonfan !

dizzydizzydizzy · 24/10/2025 07:30

I think you will be cold on the flight wearing a sundress. I would wear a lightweight pair of trousers, a t shirt and a fleece You can put your fleece in your bag if you are too warm at your destination. You will probably need a fleece in the evenings on holiday.

dudsville · 24/10/2025 07:31

I would be cold until the end of the flight if I just wore light layers, and anyway you'll also need the warmer clothes for the flight back and getting home. I think I would just have to accept that I needed, say, a backpack to carry a wool jumper, coat, socks and anything else. I would wear birkenstock Bostons so that I could wear thick wool socks until landing. I have a long fitted denim dress that's and I find it comfortable, very presentable, and a good crossover fabric re weather.

Edited

lol, hit a nerve? It just looks like a jumper and skirt . However a dress and leggings looks like a dress and leggings.😂

UpMyself · 24/10/2025 07:53

Not at all, it's just that neither outfit sounded great. I know people who look great in a dress and leggings. You might look great in your outfit.
I'd not wear them.

smileymileysmiley · 24/10/2025 08:07

just got back from tenerife and it was up to 29/30 in the day and 23-25 at night
I flew in loose fitting, light weight trousers a t-shirt, trainers and hoodie. Fine at both ends of the airport!
could not be faffing with a long trench coat! 🤣

And that’s fine, but your previous comment was incredibly snippy. I’m tall and slim and there is nothing odd about a jumper and skirt. If you’d not wear a jumper and skirt, fair enough.

UpMyself · 24/10/2025 08:22

@Wildgoat , my reply was a retort to your post. Your posts look incredibly snippy.

cinnamonbunlover · 24/10/2025 10:27

I’d wear wide leg jersey trousers, a thick strap vest top, cardigan, coat and scarf, crocs or Birkenstocks clogs or maybe trainers.

JackieGoodman · 24/10/2025 18:38

Layers, so jersey tapered trousers (no trouser bottoms on skanky toilet floors) trainers, t-shirt, hoody, light rain jacket, scarf. Rain jacket and scarf in bag on arrival in warm country, hoody tied around waist.

Focusispower · 24/10/2025 18:47

We go to the Canary Islands every winter. I just wear comfortable trousers like leggings or jeans etc and just make sure I layer. I’d rather be a bit warm there than cold here without a doubt! It’s also not boiling there - low 20s on average and plenty of locals will be in jeans etc. and you’ll be fine if you have a t-shirt as a layer.

janamo · 24/10/2025 19:20

I can't believe I'm reading grown women discussing what's best to wear going and coming from a holiday. I know it's going to be in December but honestly, it's very easy and the choices really depend on how you feel about different items.

I go away for Christmas too, and I don't even think about it. Loose elastic waisted trousers, T shirt, and either cardigan or fleece + a warm scarf. Rainjacket on top of all that (at departure) if I'm cold and off I go. The layers are the key. Pull on, peel off!

Rina66 · 24/10/2025 19:44

This is Style & Beauty @janamo we can get even more vacuous over any number of things, but we love it 😂 I don’t want to discuss high brow things, I’ve done all that, I’m only here for the flim flam now

Ah I know. I'm in a mood because I have an ingrown toenail that's flipping killing me, and have to find shoes that have a humungous toe box until I can get it fixed.

Truce?

TheChosenTwo · 24/10/2025 21:31

I’m going to the Caribbean in a few weeks, will wear leggings, vest and a sweatshirt to the airport with a massive blanket scarf/pashmina to double up as a plane pillow.
for the amount of time I’ll be freezing if I wore less clothes (or a long dress or floaty trousers) compared to being a bit warm the other end but with mostly aircon in the airport and then the hotel we will check in at, I decided I can handle being warm for a few minutes while going to get our transfer (also air conned!). Pashmina thing will be thrown in my bag along with the sweatshirt if I’m too warm.
