What would you wear to travel to canaries in December ?

I’m flying to the Canaries in mid December and don’t want suffer in the heat travelling from the airport to our destination. I also want to be comfortable during the flight. We’re leaving the car in airport parking and getting the shuttle to the airport.

I was thinking a knee length sundress in black (sleeveless) with leggings under, cardigan or jumper and longish gilet with trainers.

What would you wear?

Linen pants and a blouse/shirt and a waterproof for if its raining

wherewillwegoto · 22/10/2025 01:34

Thanks. I'll be freezing in this country though.

I would wear uniqlo (other brands are available) elastic waist trousers, cotton l/s t-shirt, crocs and socks, pashmina, all topped with a long trench, to the airport. I don't feel the cold and find even the airport too hot.
Ditch the trench and pashmina when you land.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/10/2025 05:25

I would be taking layers and def a jacket to the canaries in December as its often windy and can get down to low teens after dark. So for airport I would be wearing lightweight trousers, tshirt, light fleece then waterproof jacket. Pack the sundress for daytime on holiday.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/10/2025 07:28

End Nov for me, jersey wide leg trousers, fitted t shirt, hoodie, chunky Adidas. I'm always cold on the plane so hoodie will ge kept on and taken off on arrival

Funderthighs · 22/10/2025 07:37

I usually have shorts & t shirt in my hand luggage & change in the toilets at baggage reclaim. We flew to Tenerife in February this year and had to wait for a bus to the aircraft, in a freezing windy corridor with the door open. It was then pouring with rain as we waited to go up the aeroplane steps. I was pleased I was wrapped up warmly with my raincoat on. Lots of people were in summer clothes and sandals and were freezing cold and soaking wet by the time we got on board. The weather at the other end was lovely though. Enjoy your holiday.

Mumofteenandtween · 22/10/2025 07:38

What time of day are you leaving and arriving?

chalkyc2 · 22/10/2025 07:59

I’m in the canaries right now - it’s max around 25 degrees so not intense heat at any point. I just travelled in jeans/t- shirt and a sweatshirt and took the sweatshirt off when we arrived.

MorningFresh · 22/10/2025 08:05

A warm scarf in a neutral colour is always good in these situations. And easy to remove layers.

You don’t feel the cold but wear socks, a trench coat and pashmina to the canaries?!

OP - just a comfortable dress and trainers with a light jacket or cardigan 🤷🏽‍♀️

You’re not in south Tenerife then!

MiddleAgedDread · 22/10/2025 08:28

you've only got to get from the car to a bus in the UK. the airport will be roasting, they always are! I'd wear lightweight cotton trousers, tshirt, hoodie and trainers.

mamagogo1 · 22/10/2025 08:29

I wore cropped jeans when I went, it wasn’t overly hot, just pleasantly warm at 6pm when we landed

CheeseWisely · 22/10/2025 08:30

My hot>cold (or vice versa) travel outfit is a jersey maxi skirt, t-shirt and denim jacket, with a light jumper and a pair of tights in my carry-on to add for the ‘cold’ bit. And usually a wrap or pashmina as it has a million uses.

Lordofmyflies · 22/10/2025 08:31

I'd wear comfy yoga pants, a cami and my soft oversized woolly cardigan which acts as a blanket or removed if hot.

mamagogo1 · 22/10/2025 08:31

@botheredandbewilderedagain

crocs and socks??? Really? Tell me that’s not a fashion, ick, as bad as sliders and socks which make me cringe

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2025 08:37

What time’s your flight ?
Assuming you will be landing in daylight, I would wear joggers, T shirt, hoody, light puffa jacket and trainers. I would have some sandals and lighter/crop trousers in my hand luggage. I would also have light waterproof on hand in case needed.

Plenty of layers to allow for differing temperatures. Whether or not you’ll have to change at the other end depends on time of day and the length of your transfer. You may just need to remove the jacket/hoody.
I normally have a check in case and a rucksack on the plane with a change of clothes and emergency toiletries/medication (including sun cream!)

UpMyself · 22/10/2025 08:45

Fleece, sweatshirt, t-shirt and jeans, trainers type outfit. You'll be cold when you get back to the UK.
In December., the Canaries are like a UK cool summer day. It is unlikely to rain, but take a pac-a-mac.

DappledThings · 22/10/2025 08:47

How are you getting from the airport to the hotel? Unless you're walking it won't be a problem to be a little bit overdressed for that short time. Most likely on some form of air-conditioned transport I would have thought.

TheTwenties · 22/10/2025 09:00

I travelled regularly between hot & cold until recently. I found in the last few years the best option was an over the knee, long or 3/4 length sleeve dress with tights, Heat tech top under & cardi over. All the extras to the dress can be added or removed on the plane or airport bathroom. A not too long length dress is also practical for plane toilets so it’s not dragging on the ground like trousers.

Did you miss the part where those are for travelling to the airport? Good luck in returning to the UK, dressed in just your suggestions, to travel home.

Since you think you NEED an explanation of not feeling the cold, I live in the far north, my house is currently 13C and I haven't turned on the central heating yet. You're welcome!

UpMyself · 22/10/2025 09:44

@NConthe , OP is travelling to the Canaries in mid-December.

OP - just a comfortable dress and trainers with a light jacket or cardigan is not suitable in the UK that time of year, and there's a lot of standing around when you get back to the airport. If you are coming back from somewhere warm, you will notice the cold.

roastchestnut · 22/10/2025 10:07

I go to a v hot country every December flying from UK and it's always linen trousers, a linen top and a jumper for the UK end / on the flight.

FrenchandSaunders · 22/10/2025 10:26

I went last New Year and wore warm clothes here and on the plane, jeans/hoodie/trainers/coat. I packed shorts/sandals etc in my hand luggage and changed in the loo whilst DH waited for our luggage.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 22/10/2025 10:37

We go to the canaries most Decembers.
we travel in Jeans, T’shirt and a hoodie with trainers. It’s not too hot to be in jeans and T just for the airport and taxi to resort at that time of year then change once we get to the hotel.
