WTF is with all the Nylon jumpers

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:34

Can't find a jumper. So many seem to be nylon blends. What is going on?? I don't want a nylon jumper, and I don't want to pay £100 for it, recycled or not. Sea Salt, Fat Face, White Stuff, M&S, Oliver Bonas etc etc

See also Mohair blends, all the rage this year, but soooo itchy.

Wool is sustainable, recyclable, degradable, and farmers are literally burning it because they can't sell it. Make it make sense.

Also, as I am having a grumble, they are all cut short, and round neck or funnel neck, and I want v neck and longer, not tunic, just not cut at my belly button!

I have bought a couple from Uniqlo, in Merino, lovely, but my favourite V Neck they have changed the style to a really high V like a mans jumper. Why? Are we scared of a bit of boob now??

Agree. Tried on a couple in Whistles this week - thin and synthetic yet £100 each. Would be very scared to wash. Starting to feel that cotton jumpers are the best way forward.

MidnightPatrol · 13/10/2025 10:37

I think the issue is that wool is expensive - so to make things at the right price point they’re using other fabrics.

But - I agree re: why is wool expensive, presumably the processing of it.

Id expect to be paying £200+ for a decent wool jumper now.

Agree I expect wool to be expensive. I don't expect synthetic jumpers to be. Literally see no difference between a Whistles £100 jumper and a supermarket equivalent. It's an absolute con.

Lanva · 13/10/2025 10:43

And yet the Wool Board are paying 75p a fleece to British farmers. Why is wool so expensive when it's running all over the place? Maybe it wasn't such a great idea closing down all those mills.

Lennonjingles · 13/10/2025 10:43

I recently got a brochure in the post from Woolover, they have some V neck wool jumpers, not purchased any myself so can’t give feedback, but they do look good, prices around £60 to £80.

Sidebeforeself · 13/10/2025 10:44

God yes re the short cut. Im only 5 foot 4, so if they are short on me what chance do most women have?!

Ihateboris · 13/10/2025 10:45

I completely agree...I never buy new stuff anymore. Vinted or Vestiaire are my go to shops.

Wool has one of the lower processing costs. There is no reason why it should be expensive.

Ineedanewsofa · 13/10/2025 10:47

You need to switch from high street to more heritage (old lady 🤣) brands as what you want isn’t fashionable at the moment. House of Bruar will have 100% wool v neck jumpers and often have a good sale on. Had a couple of things from there and very happy with composition and quality

The thing is - the clothes manufacturers will be prioritising price / profit over quality. If they don’t think their consumers will pay an even slight premium for wool… they won’t sell it.

Given all of this high street stuff will be manufactured in Bangladesh, Vietnam etc - wool might actually not be that cheap to use.

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:49

I have been receiving Woolover brochures, but they look quite "old lady". I mean, I'm 59, but the cuts seem a bit meh. Maybe I just need to massively size up there??

House of Bruar I also saw, but the prices, eeek

We have a Brora in town too, fabulous, but again the prices.....

I bought two lovely sweaters in wool/cotton in John Lewis on Saturday. Their own brands. There is sooooo much polyester and acrylic in the other brands. And no v necks to be found, I am large of nork and do not suit high round necklines.

Autumn1990 · 13/10/2025 10:51

Wool processing costs are high in the uk. There is also limited processing capability

grapesstrawberriespleass · 13/10/2025 11:08

I actually agree with this so much, everything is bloody polyester or nylon or viscose. I’m a vegan and have been for years and I would so much rather buy a second hand wool jumper that will last me years as opposed to a jumper made of plastic that’s going to bobble and will be binned in a few months.

Most of my clothes are second hand and I knit and crochet to make my own, but even that is tricky as all easily available yarn is acrylic! I buy wool yarn from brands that source from farms that don’t practice mulesing, and I use a lot of cotton yarn too. It might make me a terrible vegan lol but I figure the meat trade is unlikely to stop in my lifetime and as long as I’m not driving demand I feel okay about it. Plus, by avoiding man made fibres I’m saving so much rubbish from landfill.

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 11:12

According to Google, recycling nylon is expensive, but consumers are prepared to pay the premium for sustainability. Bollocks.

And they wonder why we all shopping on Vinted.

I think I might write to all these companies and express my annoyance. I add White Stuff and Crew to my original list. Sigh.

I feel exactly the same. it’s really disapping. All I want is a 100% wool jumper. I’m going to email some brands to let them know why I am not buying their stuff.

A 100% wool jumper would be insanely itchy!

Why is it cruel? Sheep have to be shorn. To leave them inshore would be crueler.

What? No it’s not!
If you are sensitive to wool, don’t wear it next to the skin and wear breeds like merino that have finer fibres. But mixing in artificial fibres doesn’t stop it being itchy; if you are sensitive or allergic 50% wool instead of 100% isn’t going to magically avoid the problem.

JoeTheDrummer · 13/10/2025 11:24

It’s also hard searching for wool/cashmere on Vinted, as so many sellers categorise things incorrectly. Often clicking on something which says wool only to find it’s acrylic.

Absolutely nothing to do with wool but House of Bruar is my very favourite toilet stop in the world 😀

Yes, I am part of a collective trying to arrange and crowdfund for the year’s clip to be spun from a farm we are involved with, and even though we are willing to pay premium prices for knitting yarn and are getting the fleece for very little it’s not clear we’re going to be able to make it work.

SingingSands · 13/10/2025 11:29

TK Maxx have their own label of 100% lambs wool jumpers under the label Mercer & Madison. I bought a gorgeous navy one last week for £34.99. You do have to hunt through the racks though.

I had been specifically looking for pure wool as the static in M&S from all the plastic jumpers was ridiculous!
