WTF is with all the Nylon jumpers

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:34

Can't find a jumper. So many seem to be nylon blends. What is going on?? I don't want a nylon jumper, and I don't want to pay £100 for it, recycled or not. Sea Salt, Fat Face, White Stuff, M&S, Oliver Bonas etc etc

See also Mohair blends, all the rage this year, but soooo itchy.

Wool is sustainable, recyclable, degradable, and farmers are literally burning it because they can't sell it. Make it make sense.

Also, as I am having a grumble, they are all cut short, and round neck or funnel neck, and I want v neck and longer, not tunic, just not cut at my belly button!

I have bought a couple from Uniqlo, in Merino, lovely, but my favourite V Neck they have changed the style to a really high V like a mans jumper. Why? Are we scared of a bit of boob now??

A 100% wool jumper would be insanely itchy!

Not at all - good quality wool should not be itchy.

Unfortunately most clothing manufactured these days is terrible quality - low quality fibres/fabrics and badly put together.

Imbrocator · 13/10/2025 13:50

I agree wholeheartedly: so many nice clothes I see and they’re all 50% recycled nylon. Infuriating!

Mulledjuice · 13/10/2025 13:51

Happyjoe · 13/10/2025 11:15

And there are people like me who don't wish to buy wool because if it being a cruel industry. Can't please everyone!

How cruel compared with microplastucs making their way into seas and rivers?

Happyjoe · 13/10/2025 13:54

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/10/2025 11:18

Why is it cruel? Sheep have to be shorn. To leave them inshore would be crueler.

It's very easy to find out yourself, via google!

Ever head the expression two wrongs don't make a right?

And bravo with the whataboutery! If it were just down to jumpers you'd have had a point...

Roz446 · 13/10/2025 13:56

Agree, have the same problem finding cotton clothes nowadays

It's all about profit, I agree. Sadly same thing goes for the animal side of it.

PrissyGalore · 13/10/2025 13:58

actually agree with this so much, everything is bloody polyester or nylon or viscose. I’m a vegan and have been for years and I would so much rather buy a second hand wool jumper that will last me years as opposed to a jumper made of plastic that’s going to bobble and will be binned in a few months.

How can someone be vegan yet wear wool?

No.
Vegan is a lifestyle isn't it, not just diet.

NotInMyyName · 13/10/2025 14:02

I have a few of these. They are v neck and long and they wash and wear well.

PS decent fabric quality. Usually money off offers.

MrsEMR · 13/10/2025 14:03

I hate polyester and all petroleum based fabrics. They are a sustainability nightmare. The recycling process uses toxic chemicals so that option is no better. Even worse they make me sweaty and uncomfortable. The search for wool or cotton alternatives is difficult. However, I got a lovely fine knit merino wool jumper in M&S last year. Product Code
T388624 Looks like it is still available.

I've bought wool jumpers and cardigans from Uniqlo in recent years - haven't looked at this year's offerings.

My review is ‘nice but they are very short’ 😂

ElleintheWoods · 13/10/2025 14:13

What's going on is simply profit margins. It's cheaper to make from these materials and still charge the same, many consumers aren't that savvy, they just see a pretty jumper.

Everything is artificial materials these days, even 'designer' dresses in the 100s.

I would recommend to go on Vinted/ other and just buy vintage, you get a nicer item from good materials for a better price, and reduce fashion waist. More choice and colours also.

Real quality soft cashmere or similar from somewhere like Joseph, Reiss or Hobbs is over 200 these days. I don't think it's worth it - though I love the Joseph ones. I can get proper vintage Italian wool items from designer brands at sample sales for a better price.

RRP vs the aftermarket price really shows you the true value of an item, and 100 quid for nylon it ain't.

Edited

I’m a great fan of these too. I’m long backed so normal length jumpers are always too short.

Dontfencemein · 13/10/2025 14:14

Try Woolovers. Their stuff lasts ages if you wash it carefully (as you would any pure wool).

Lanva · 13/10/2025 14:19

The sheep on our hills are having a brilliant life. I walk past them every day and I can tell you they are contented little beings: playing, eating grass, randomly rushing up little hillocks to stand about confusedly and then wander back down again. There's nowt cruel about it. I've seen them being shorn too, and they are glad of it as they get too hot.

I'm not saying no sheep is ever mistreated, but I can't say no child is ever mistreated either. It's not inherently a cruel industry.

You can see how sheep live with your own eyes as they live outside all around us in England. Chickens, on the other hand... those poor things are being horrifically tortured in those battery farms.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 13/10/2025 14:31

I saw these in store and thought they looked pretty good for the price. Apologies for linking to the Spanish site. Massimo Dutti usually have a good selection of pure wool too, or wool and cashmere blend.

WhatterySquash · 13/10/2025 14:50

Agree OP it puts me right off, I hate synthetic jumpers. Even worse when it says wool and then you check and it's blimmin 5% wool and a load of polyester, acrylic and nylon. Ugh. And while some cheaper clothes are reasonable quality, synthetic knitwear is a false economy as it always bobbles and looks horrible in a few washes.

Another vote for Arket, lovely for 100% wool, cashmere and fine-knit merino tops. Also Celtic&Co - but this year I've been jumper shopping on Ebay as older things are better quality. VV happy with bargain Zadig & Voltaire cashmere jumper and an Arket wool one.

Superwash treated wool has had the scales removed. Obviously anything you are allergic to will make you itchy!

But it’s not very environmentally friendly. And some scales remain.

I like this Seasalt cardigan but it’s 50% nylon! For £120 - I wouldn’t buy it even if it was within my budget out of principle!

https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/sand-thistle-mohair-blend-knitted-cardigan

Yes I don’t understand these high end retailers switching to synthetic fabrics, when I had my previous babies I was able to buy beautiful maternity cotton dresses and tops from sepharine and jojo, then last baby they’d switched to nylon/polyester but the prices were even higher? Sorry I was off to Asda and just bought larger size cotton dresses at a fraction of the price

Ah, it's a lovely, fluffy picture you paint. Such a shame it's not a true reflection of most of the wool industry.

...... and let's not forget all the wool we import.

But it’s not very environmentally friendly. And some scales remain.

If you want 1. environmentally friendly (no cotton, leather, plastic, viscose, super wash wool, acid dyed colours etc) and 2. hypoallergenic non scratchy (no standard sheep wool) you're pretty much left with alpaca or just be naked. Not that Alpaca farming will be Greta approved either and a lot of people are allergic to it.

I'll stick to buying decent quality yarn, both untreated and treated for my jumpers and hope that environmentally that is better than Primark acrylic.
