WTF is with all the Nylon jumpers

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:34

Can't find a jumper. So many seem to be nylon blends. What is going on?? I don't want a nylon jumper, and I don't want to pay £100 for it, recycled or not. Sea Salt, Fat Face, White Stuff, M&S, Oliver Bonas etc etc

See also Mohair blends, all the rage this year, but soooo itchy.

Wool is sustainable, recyclable, degradable, and farmers are literally burning it because they can't sell it. Make it make sense.

Also, as I am having a grumble, they are all cut short, and round neck or funnel neck, and I want v neck and longer, not tunic, just not cut at my belly button!

I have bought a couple from Uniqlo, in Merino, lovely, but my favourite V Neck they have changed the style to a really high V like a mans jumper. Why? Are we scared of a bit of boob now??

Ah, it's a lovely, fluffy picture you paint. Such a shame it's not a true reflection of most of the wool industry.

...... and let's not forget all the wool we import.

Edited

Which bit is not true? Because it sounds pretty accurate to me.
You can argue that it doesn’t account for traumatic moments in the sheep’s life and their eventual end, but it is a fair reflection of the majority of their life in this country. There aren’t vast indoor sheep feedlots where they are kept in cages.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/10/2025 16:33

Celtic (Cornwall) has pure wool jumpers, certainly for under£200. I have a lovely one made from
pure undyed British wool and certainly paid well under £200.

Have a google about the sheep & wool industry here and abroad.
Have a google about how much wool we import (for clothing & textile industry), from China, India, Italy... then wonder about how they treat the animal. Have a look at how many finished items of wool clothing that we import.

There is your answer.

A massive proportion of the food/skin industry is cruel world wide - because it's profit based. To think that it's not true to the fact you see some sheep out in the fields is am afraid, a bit fluffy.

I never seem to see nylon jumpers for sale anywhere, viscose or polyester...yes. Nylon? nope!
Im quite happy with my viscose/polyester blends though, they all seem to be lasting very well (Im another one who doesnt do animal products).

Agree, nylon - no. It's really staticky, so it's not something I'd buy anyway.

Screamingabdabz · 13/10/2025 16:51

Yep - same boat. So sick of high weird unflattering necklines. Who do they suit? Even on evening dresses! I’d love the designers to give one flying crap about busty bloaty menopausal women who still need to go out and look half decent when the weather is cold! V necks are so elegant.

I haven’t just seen a few sheep out in a field thanks, I have a number of farming friends (live in a rural area) who have their own flocks or work as shepherds, and your PETA link is muddling up the overseas and domestic industries and presenting some extreme abuses as typical.

I’m not interested in ‘having a google’ about how much wool we import because I am well aware it’s too much; the domination of the industry by merino, which doesn’t thrive in the UK, helps to push out native breeds.

But I don’t think PETA is doing animal welfare any favours by treating the wool industry everywhere as an undifferentiated mass. British wool is relatively high welfare. It’s not all pretty as no kind of animal farming is. It is, however, far far more sustainable than all the plastic based substitutes.

Whichhandbag · 13/10/2025 17:12

Very curious about how those who like synthetic fibres like viscose wash them? Everything I have ever bought in viscose has shrunk even on a cold wash, not to mention stinking of sweat within about 10 minutes!

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 17:43

Thanks everyone, I don't feel so alone now!

Yes, I do have big boobs, hence the need for v neck, or slouchy boat neck.

Why is it that mens jumpers and tops, and suits etc are all pure wool, or pure cotton. That really pisses me off too.

I have no issue with pure wool from the UK. As noted above, I too am surrounded by happy sheep. Step away from Google, and take anything PETA says with a huge grain of salt. Most of it is bollocks, and heavily skewed to international states, not the UK. We have some of the best animal protections in the world.

I have 100% British wool blankets, and they are fabulous.

Cloths moths are, sadly, an issue..... I have had some holes in my carpets, but not in my clothes. I keep moth repellents in my wardrobes and drawers.

I love a high neckline (as an athletic build menopausal woman!).
But I do agree it's a shame that v necks are out of fashion at the moment. It is a flattering look on most figures.

Apologies if this has already been said but my understanding (from speaking to the owner of a woollen mills recently) is that the vast majority of sheep are now being bred for meat, so they will get as big as possibly as cheaply/quickly as possible. But the breeds that are good for meat do not produce good-quality wool. Which is why the fleeces are virtually worthless and why good quality wool clothing is so expensive. I feel the same as the OP about jumpers and about all high street clothing at the moment - fabrics have deteriorated so rapidly in the past few years.

Yes that’s correct.
But there are also some meat breeds with perfectly usable wool (speaking as a spinner/knitter) that there’s no market for because everyone wants the softness of merino.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/10/2025 18:11

I'm allergic to wool (and cashmere, angora and alpaca), and I'm struggling to find jumpers that they haven't shoved 5% wool into. They makes it unwearable for me, and it's not enough wool for the wool enthusiasts 😔

RedRiverShore5 · 13/10/2025 18:18

Next Premium has a navy one for £59, there are also a few branded ones on there

Tigerthatcametobrunch · 13/10/2025 18:23

House of Bruar have loads starting at about £50 for pure lambwool

Yes, I wash them. They don't shrink, nor stink 🤷🏻‍♀️

Viscose I was on a totally cold wash and it's fine for shrinking. I remember Fatface turning to ecovero viscose and everything I bought tops and dress wise shrunk. They say 30oC but cold cold wash works.

You need to switch from high street to more heritage (old lady 🤣) brands as what you want isn’t fashionable at the moment. House of Bruar will have 100% wool v neck jumpers and often have a good sale on. Had a couple of things from there and very happy with composition and quality

I totally agree. I’ve often suggested House of Bruar to OPs on here as the obvious product they’re looking for, but am usually shouted down or studiously ignored for bringing up such old fashioned stuff!

is what came to mind on reading this thread.

Ever head the expression two wrongs don't make a right?

And bravo with the whataboutery! If it were just down to jumpers you'd have had a point...

Edited

It was a genuine question!

Whataboutery is where you pull in something totally unrelated. Surely if everyone moves from wool to polyester then that's a shift from land animal to sea/river animal impact.

I'm not vegan and wasnt aware that wool was an especially cruel industry? Unless you have a general objection to the rearing of any animals for human benefit however they're treated?

CountryMouse22 · 13/10/2025 18:47

On the strength of your response, I have bought a cardi from TK Maxx for £29.99, it looks lovely!

Paetina · 13/10/2025 18:51

I'm a big fan of H&M Cashmere - I'm wearing a 3 year old jumper from there right now. It has been frequently worn, shoved into a washing maching (wool wash) and generally abused - looks like new. Not super cheap but long lasting (and so comfortable/warm).

Ddakji · 13/10/2025 18:57

I never wear wool because it’s itchy and makes my skin flare up. So I’m happy with synthetic knitwear options.

Pliudev · 13/10/2025 19:36

Agree OP. I bought a Seasalt jumper last year, not realising it was 20% nylon. After a couple of wears it looked like I'd got it from a jumble sale and it had a nasty sheen. Even Poetry are adding nylon to the mix and they are certainly not cheap. I also bought a jumper from Sahara, described as cashmere that turned out to be 10% cashmere. I complained about the wording and they changed it.
