WTF is with all the Nylon jumpers

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:34

Can't find a jumper. So many seem to be nylon blends. What is going on?? I don't want a nylon jumper, and I don't want to pay £100 for it, recycled or not. Sea Salt, Fat Face, White Stuff, M&S, Oliver Bonas etc etc

See also Mohair blends, all the rage this year, but soooo itchy.

Wool is sustainable, recyclable, degradable, and farmers are literally burning it because they can't sell it. Make it make sense.

Also, as I am having a grumble, they are all cut short, and round neck or funnel neck, and I want v neck and longer, not tunic, just not cut at my belly button!

I have bought a couple from Uniqlo, in Merino, lovely, but my favourite V Neck they have changed the style to a really high V like a mans jumper. Why? Are we scared of a bit of boob now??

Other Stories, Cos, Arket IME will all routinely carry 100% options, occasionally M&S (several cashmere and merino options, less for pure ‘normal’ wool) - just need to carefully dig in the the composition info.

CrystalShoe · 13/10/2025 11:31

For ages now, there have been MANY more crew neck jumpers than V-neck. Drives me mad. I checked on the Marks website and they have 3.25 x the amount of crew necks as V-necks. I don't know why the high street prefers crew necks. Many women, including me, have big boobs and look much better in V necks.

And there are people like me who don't wish to buy wool because if it being a cruel industry. Can't please everyone!

You know that wool and sheepskin are not the same things, right ... ?

I'm with you OP, particularly with the 'polyamide' which seems to be included just to make things that bit scratchy.

M&S have loads of merino and cashmere jumpers. Palome have cashmere and cotton well under £100.

spoonbillstretford · 13/10/2025 11:34

I prefer a blend, 100% wool can be difficult to wash and is as itchy as fuck. Yes it does make a difference whether it's a blend or 100%. And I don't like V-neck sweaters generally, they remind me of school uniform.

Wexone · 13/10/2025 11:35

You need to change where you shop, have a look in your local boutiques, they sell more unique brands that are less mass manufactured then high street brands, Just bought a wool and alpaca blend jumper by MOS MOSH. Yes it has cost me over 100 but its beautiful and so cosy
@Happyjoe please go educate your self, wool shearing is not a cruel industry, Sheep need their wool sheared for their quality of life - not shearing is CRUEL

Because v necks aren’t in fashion, and haven’t been for some time.

DrNo007 · 13/10/2025 11:36

Couldn't agree more OP. As a PP said, farmers are burning fleeces as there is no call for them. Presumably all our mills have closed due to the public buying so much acrylic. Woolovers (agree their designs are very frumpy) points out that even small amounts of synthetic fibre in a jumper will create microplastics when it's washed. Just ugh.

Wool is most certainly not intrinsically expensive - I am old enough to remember regularly buying thick wool jumpers for only 30 quid and it wasn't that much money even then. But the rarer something becomes and the less processing capacity is available, I guess it becomes more expensive. It is ludicrous that we now have to pay 2-300 pounds for a pure wool jumper of decent thickness.

One suggestion: last time I wanted a proper thick wool jumper, I ended up buying it online from Norway. It was a right hassle so I won't do it again. But good to see the Norwegians haven't entirely gone the same way as England and done away with their wool industry.

You can buy cotton though Happyjoe. It’s readily available. There’s more organic cotton than ever thank goodness. Quite a bit of linen too now.

Many more brands now certify that their wool is mulesing-free now which I look for so its easier to buy cruelty free wool.

I don’t find 100% wool unbearably itchy. If I did I would try a cotton layer underneath. Or live with it.

Its frankly bizarre to me that anyone claiming to love animals supports polyurethane ‘vegan shoes’ and nylon, polyester etc when you consider the damage that the production causes and their persistence in the environment which harms animals and habitats.

Even if you want to avoid wool and leather, surely the alternative must be at least biodegradable.

spoonbillstretford · 13/10/2025 11:37

You need somewhere like Woolovers for 100% wool, not the general fashion brands on the high street.

Rosesarere · 13/10/2025 11:38

Arket do lovely 100% wool jumpers.

Try TK Max. I never have and never will spend what some other posters are suggesting you spend on a jumper.

chipsticksmammy · 13/10/2025 11:45

I tried a lot of Uniqlo wool jumpers last week in store, I am petite and they were too short on me. There was no shrinkage allowance and if I raised my hands up my belly was out....

No thanks 😂

Teaforthetotal · 13/10/2025 11:47

This has been on my mind too, just about to collect a merino wool cardigan from mark's.Seemed like one of the only 100 per cent wool offerings on their site so I really hope it fits okay .
I bought two blended cardigans from marks last year which washes well and are reasonably comfortable but if prefer to graduate to wool for comfort and ecological reasons.
I've been recommended Community clothing on here when I asked about this last year but the fits and colours never look right for me.

JoeTheDrummer · 13/10/2025 11:24

It’s also hard searching for wool/cashmere on Vinted, as so many sellers categorise things incorrectly. Often clicking on something which says wool only to find it’s acrylic.

same on ebay, even if the search is for ‘100%’ or ‘pure’!
& if by some miracle the labels are photographed they manage to only show brand &/or washing instructions???!

MidnightMeltdown · 13/10/2025 11:47

I don’t know about wool, but I’ve noticed that the price of cashmere has gone up this year. I bought a cashmere cardigan from Cos and it was £185, which is definitely more than I’ve paid in previous years.

Really? I thought V-necks were a staple that were impervious to fashion, like socks. How weird!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/10/2025 11:18

Why is it cruel? Sheep have to be shorn. To leave them inshore would be crueler.

It’s more about the fact sheep have been genetically engineered over the years to grow such heavy fleeces. So it isn’t particularly natural for them to grow so woolly and need such frequent clipping. There’s also the awful practice of mulesing which gives many of them horrible infections etc.

Yeah but crew necks often only suit flat chested women. People want choice.

LoveSandbanks · 13/10/2025 11:55

Happyjoe · 13/10/2025 11:16

A 100% wool jumper would be insanely itchy!

It really won’t be. It depends on the type of wool used and the way it’s finished. Merino next to the skin is not at all itchy.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/10/2025 12:08

M&S usually do cheap 100% merino wool jumpers. I ordered some last year based on good reviews, but personally I thought that the quality was shocking so they went back. In my experience, you get what you pay for with wool, and quality jumpers are worth spending on.

puffyisgood · 13/10/2025 12:11

Usually cheap[er], easy to wash, feels & looks usually not great but better than it used to,...

I have a wool one from Toast and agree it is itchy. It is warm though. On the plus side it suggests not to wash it much, but when you do cold hand wash and then you have to lie it flat so it’s quite a long process.

op they all seem to be real wool at Toast.

But there is clearly a lot of demand for v-necks so these clothing retailers are missing out here.

Selectively bred but not genetically engineered!
Mulesing is horrible but an easy way to avoid it is to buy British wool rather than imported merino.

Hahahaha yes sorry that’s what I meant - thought I suppose by selectively breeding we have sort of engineered their genetics 😔

Yes I always do lots of research before I buy - there’s a good website called knitting for olive who do great cruelty free yarn.
