WTF is with all the Nylon jumpers

HostaCentral · 13/10/2025 10:34

Can't find a jumper. So many seem to be nylon blends. What is going on?? I don't want a nylon jumper, and I don't want to pay £100 for it, recycled or not. Sea Salt, Fat Face, White Stuff, M&S, Oliver Bonas etc etc

See also Mohair blends, all the rage this year, but soooo itchy.

Wool is sustainable, recyclable, degradable, and farmers are literally burning it because they can't sell it. Make it make sense.

Also, as I am having a grumble, they are all cut short, and round neck or funnel neck, and I want v neck and longer, not tunic, just not cut at my belly button!

I have bought a couple from Uniqlo, in Merino, lovely, but my favourite V Neck they have changed the style to a really high V like a mans jumper. Why? Are we scared of a bit of boob now??

polyester is made by fossils
fake fleece is plastic
the man that originated in Massachusetts in 1979 when Malden Mills and Patagonia developed Synchilla (synthetic chinchilla).[3] It was a new, light, strong pile fabric meant to mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool. Malden Mills CEO Aaron Feuerstein intentionally declined to patent polar fleece, allowing the material to be produced cheaply and widely by many vendors, leading to the material's quick and wide acceptance.[4][5][6] Malden Mills registered PolarFleece as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 6, 1981.[7

It was a genuine question!

Whataboutery is where you pull in something totally unrelated. Surely if everyone moves from wool to polyester then that's a shift from land animal to sea/river animal impact.

I'm not vegan and wasnt aware that wool was an especially cruel industry? Unless you have a general objection to the rearing of any animals for human benefit however they're treated?

Apologies, and yes, am not keen on animals used for humans, be it food or clothing. We are so cruel and destructive as a race, it's disgusting.

Plastics, including the microplastics in our sea is caused by our use of plastic - it's not just washing synthetic fibres. Sure, go back to natural wood, cotton fabrics, even wool if needed but we don't need to carry out the cruelty aspect that is involved in a high percentage. Merino is especially cruel - huge proportion comes from Oz, who practice live cutting, basically cutting sheep without painkillers or anything. Even in the UK has been proven to be cruel too often with obtaining wool because profit always comes before welfare.

Sure, stick fingers in ears by all means.

Which is exactly what you’re doing about damage to the environment from all the plastics.
If you can tell me you only wear homegrown linen, hemp, nettle fibre you might have the right to lecture wool wearers. Can you?

You forgot cotton, viscose, modal. And actually, yes, I didn't realise but yes, nearly all my wardrobe is made of the above.

I do hope that you don't use any plastic? As so concerned about the ocean? None at all, no plastic beads in your scrubs or toothpaste? No bottles of water? Good.

At least I do my very best not to take part in known cruelty for the sake of fashion where I can. There is also no way to tell in our high streets where the wool actually comes from in majority of shops and are indeed, wearing outrageous cruelty.

And, lecture? Nah, inform yes. Sorry if facing the truth feels like a lecture.

I bought four jumpers today from TK max. All 100% merino or cashmere. I had to really sort through but there were various options in amongst all the polyester

You haven’t told me anything I didn’t know. Your posts on this thread have been self righteous but wholly uninformative. You’ll have to do better than that if you want to have any impact other than making yourself feel more virtuous than everyone else, which is all you’re doing right now.
Of course I don’t use toothpastes or scrubs with plastic beads or disposable plastic water bottles ffs, those are such easy wins when it comes to cutting down plastic usage. I’m not lecturing other people about what they use though, you are the one who has come to this thread to do that.

I didn’t forget cotton, viscose and modal; while they’re not plastics they do tend to be worse for the environment in processing due to higher usage of harmful chemicals and excessive amounts of water. Nothing equals wool in that respect.

It's very easy to ignore me you know. Same as what goes on in the wool industry. Cheers!

I recently got a brochure in the post from Woolover, they have some V neck wool jumpers, not purchased any myself so can’t give feedback, but they do look good, prices around £60 to £80.

I’ve bought a few jumpers & cardis from Woolovers over the years (because I wanted pure wool items too), and they are nice.

TheBookShelf · 13/10/2025 20:08

Another vote for Woolovers and House of Bruar. I've had lots of 100% wool knitwear from both and it is good quality and lasts a long time if cared for properly. They both do a classic v neck wool jumper in lots of colours. Definitely heritage rather than fashion - parts of both their catalogues remind me of the models in 1970s My Weekly -but good durable basics.

Up a notch from that in budget terms are companies such as Celtic, and many small Scottish knitwear companies all offering pure wool. Google 'scottish knitwear' for lots of options.

I used to be able to get wool jumpers from Sea Salt, Fatface, White Stuff, M&S etc - not any more. Their current jumpers nearly all seem to contain lots of acrylic and many look nasty before they even leave the shop.

Whereas my 35 year old Laura Ashley wool jumper is indestructible and still looks like new. No wonder people are shopping on Vinted.

And you, have fun!

CuddlesKovinsky · 13/10/2025 22:29

@TheBookShelf Thank you for that apt description of the models! 😄 They're all lovely, but very much styled that '1970s ladies' magazines' way!

I'm thinking about a House of Bruar Aran cable v-neck cardigan - how do you find their sizing?

I ended up getting a couple of men's wool cardis from Marks and Spencer last year, and they're so warm and a classic design, but not quite right around the shoulders and looong arms...

Yes, I wear a lot of cardigans... post-meno, Anita Brookner chic... 😁

FightingFish · 14/10/2025 00:15

I’m totally with you on the short length, I’m finding this with a lot of tops but especially jumpers. I want total tummy coverage and hate the short boxy shapes that are in the shops. I’ve looked in the more middle aged type shops like Marks & Spencers and even Bon Marche but none are a decent length. I will scour TKMaxx next time I’m in town….

TeaRoseTallulah · 14/10/2025 00:18

I tried the Erin cardi form White Stuff on last week, really cheap and nasty looking. Recycled polyester indeed 🙄

And there are people like me who don't wish to buy wool because if it being a cruel industry. Can't please everyone!

How is wool a cruel industry? Have you ever seen a sheep which hasn't been shorn for several years?

SouthernNights59 · 14/10/2025 00:46

Happyjoe · 13/10/2025 18:30

Sure, stick fingers in ears by all means.

Anyone who gets all their "facts" from Google and PETA doesn't have a leg to stand on. Some of us are far more connected to actual rural life and I take the views of those with lived knowledge far more seriously than those who spend their time "researching".

VenusClapTrap · 14/10/2025 08:49

I nearly treated myself to a lovely cardigan from Farm Rio the other day, very expensive, but then checked composition and was shocked to discover it was 100% acrylic. At that price! Outrageous.

I’m a big fan of Woolovers. Ignore the styling, and some of the more garish colours/patterns. The quality is excellent, and the prices reasonable. Even my 15yo dd is a fan.

HostaCentral · 14/10/2025 08:54

Ok. I'm going to give Woolovers a punt and size up for a more contemporary look.

Just check the size guide as they come up pretty roomy.

Lol, you have issues over google and peta, laughable to be frank! I have issues with animal cruelty. Still, we chose our battles eh?

Sizing is true and quality is good I've had their V neck jumpers which last for ages. I also like that it is still a family owned uk company. You can order online of course, but as an added bonus the optional printed catalogues always include a personalised letter commenting on seasonal weather and the joys of wool and tweed - in the nicest way it is like shopping in the 1970s!

Ladyymuck · 14/10/2025 10:15

I was looking at jumpers this morning and saw the fairy-tale of New York jumper by Bella Freud on sale for £385 - it’s 76% polyester and 24% metallic!

Wow that is horrendous. I’ve never spent that much on a jumper but if I did I’d assume it was quality wool or cashmere. I know cheap fast fashion is throwaway and that’s bad in itself, but when high-end things are polyester and the price is solely for the fashion cred, that’s just as bad. It wouldn’t even be nice to wear.

And agree about “recycled polyester” oh look at us being super eco! If it’s shedding micro plastics it’s not eco.

No it wouldn't. You want merino. It's fabulous.

Mens at M & S are good for a classic wool or wool mix v neck.
I did get a fully woolly from Toast a few years ago. It cost a lot, even with 25% off but it has lasted so beautifully. I have worn it tons. I recently washed it for the first time, I went for a 15 minute cold machine wash with a tiny bit of spin and it survived hurrah!
I also have a wool duvet and I love it.
Is like to buy some farmers wool, wonder if I could make my own pillows!
