Holy grail of warm waterproof winter coat

Claymoreiron · 11/10/2025 09:14

I looked but can’t find a recent thread on this. I need to replace my aged and not very waterproof puffa coat.

Needs To be mid thigh at least, waterproof and insulated. Can’t afford NF and I’m not a huge fan of things that are waisted, what are all the school run mums and dog walkers buying in preparation for the winter?

My Didrikson coat is incredible. It is expensive but you wont ever be cold again. Husband got as a Christmas present years ago.. I should be on commission as two or three friends have got coats from here now. Invest in yourself! I never have nice stuff but so glad I have this when winter kicks in.

Wincher · 12/10/2025 23:36

I’ve just bought the lands end stadium squall this year. I thought it didn’t seem that warm but wore it out on one of the chillier days we’ve had and I was boiling! Now almost looking forward to it getting colder and wet so I can see how it performs.

Gallusoldbesom · 13/10/2025 00:06

I bought a
Reiner Womens Waterproof Down Parka last winter £130 from Tog24 and it’s amazing, completely waterproof and I live in Wester Ross so not exactly the driest place in Scotland!

FlourSugarButter · 13/10/2025 00:11

I bought this a couple of years ago, still as good as new and would absolutely recommend. Amazing quality for the price and totally windproof and waterproof.

I’m was looking at a dry robe. Cliche I know but warm. I just don’t care on the school run. Comfort is everything.

But just looking at skiing now and thinking actually a ski jacket might not be a bad shout.

Another vote for Seasalt - I have had this one for a few years. It's warm and waterproof, great for school run. https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/plant-hunter-womens-waterproof-coat

Not sure how it would hold up somewhere extremely cold though (I'm in London). Not sure id rely on it for a winter trip to e.g. Iceland!

I love this one!

BlueYazoo · 13/10/2025 07:13

I’ve got this one (or very similar as bought a few years ago) and I live in it all winter - I do feel the cold though. If something happened to it I would order another one the same day. Don’t usually order much from New Look but I have been very impressed with this

There is a website called sport pursuit which sell good outdoor gear at lower prices. Otherwise look at mountain warehouse.

Puffer jackets generally aren’t fully waterproof (as I constantly tell the kids at school when telling them about D of E suitable kit as the pretty much all own NF puffers!) so something like a three in one with a fleece inside might be better.

RedRiverShore5 · 13/10/2025 07:20

I find the Seasalt ones are best for everyday wear, they also do tall so I find they fit well. Anyone looking at Seasalt, they have a store on eBay which has some coats, they come from the outlet in Cornwall and free returns. It's like buying from the Seasalt shop but cheaper

Easterchicken · 13/10/2025 07:26

Id pop to go outdoors or decathlon and have a try on

Alongthetowpath · 13/10/2025 07:58

Ooh, I didn’t realise Seasalt did tall! I literally just came on to post that my MIL absolutely loves her Seasalt Janelle - she’s had it at least 10 years. I’ve borrowed it and it’s beautifully warm but the body and sleeve length is a bit short for me.
Lands End is another that I feel come up a little shorter.

I think the Scandi brands are better if you are taller, though Mountain Warehouse are also often cut a little longer.

If you want properly waterproof, I think ideally you want it to be waterproof to 20,000 mm. A technical coat should say this on the label. Water resistant coats are usually just to 5,000 mm. You will get wet through in a heavy downpour in one of those, or if you’re out in the rain a long time.

Puffer coats are unlikely to be as waterproof because the stitching that makes the “puffs” would mean there are little holes that let the water in.

I have a Mountain Warehouse Extreme waterproof down-lined coat, but I save it for extreme conditions when it is both freezing cold and pouring with rain. Most of the time I just wear a lightweight puffer which is warm enough for most of winter with a scarf added, as long as I’m not standing around for extended periods, or when it rains I have a technical waterproof with mesh lining and no padding.

RadiatorDrying · 13/10/2025 08:03

I wore Seasalt coats for for years but then moved to Finisterre which I've found to be far warmer. I've bought a few coats in their sale for around £125-150. I think they offer a discount for first time orders on full price items.

I'm now saving up for Aigle, my OH wears their coats and I went into the Paris branch recently and was very impressed.

GrumpySparkler · 11/10/2025 10:51

I have this from mountain warehouse. It's been great and I'm outdoors quite a bit with dogs and kids. I have worn it on the school run and even had some compliments on how nice it is!

I have this exact coat and think it is excellent @GrumpySparkler

It ticks the boxes of being warm (warm enough for a snowy Pennine winter) and waterproof as opposed to shower resistant.

It is also lightweight. The only slight negative was the lack of inside pockets, but nothing that using a needle and thread couldn't rectify.

BerryTwister · 13/10/2025 08:26

I got mine from Sports Direct, £25, comes down to my knees, warmest coat I’ve ever had, nothing is getting through it!!

sweetgingercat · 13/10/2025 08:56

Another vote for seasalt planthunters coat. I have two in different colours and love them. They come in different lengths too.

ColdLittleHeart · 13/10/2025 09:44

Arket do a longline puffer coat. I searched forever to find something warm, waterproof but still stylish so it can double up for the dog walks and nice days out (up north so very cold and wet) So pleased I found it!

henlake7 · 13/10/2025 09:58

OP says 'cant afford NF'....what does that mean? (probably super unimportant but its driving me nuts and doesnt seem to stand for anything according to Google!LOL)😆

Also I bought a Regatta changing robe cheap off Vinted for this winter. I shall look like a twat Im sure, but a dry and warm twat!😊

North Face is what I took it to mean.

Justanothermum42 · 13/10/2025 12:14

Didrikson! They are super warm, and just lovely. £££ but so worth it.
any dryrobe would do the job too. Two bare feet is mine - I love it when I’m watching my kids play sport all weekend.

ThatMiddleClassFood · 13/10/2025 12:14

I've just bought this one after looking for months. I can't have down because of allergies and I didn't like the style of a lot of the more popular brands on here. It's shower resistant which is fine as dry robe for downpours.

I’ve got a mountain warehouse one that separates into a puffer and raincoat. Warm, waterproof, didn’t cost the earth - and I’m tall and it’s nice and long in the sleeve.

Mine does that as well. I wonder if it is the same one that someone else posted upthread?

My son lent me his dry robe while he did a tough mudder. 2 minutes convinced I looked like a twat 2 hours of dryness, warmth and envious “you look really snug” comments 😛
