Holy grail of warm waterproof winter coat

I looked but can’t find a recent thread on this. I need to replace my aged and not very waterproof puffa coat.

Needs To be mid thigh at least, waterproof and insulated. Can’t afford NF and I’m not a huge fan of things that are waisted, what are all the school run mums and dog walkers buying in preparation for the winter?

I found a beautiful waterproof down NF coat for dog walking on Vinted for £70 that looks like it’s never been worn. Otherwise, Uniqlo usually has down/ puffa coats that are reasonably priced. May be water ‘resistant’ rather than water ‘proof’, though.

Have a look at Seasalt

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/10/2025 10:11

Didrikson is my go to. Mine is great and my adult ds followed my lead and got one too.

Dozer · 11/10/2025 10:11

Following with interest!

Don’t like Seasalt

Wiennetta · 11/10/2025 10:12

Elvine do warm and waterproof puffers! Mine has been great for me and I live in Scotland.

I have a waterproof puffer from Uniqlo which is water resistant. Technically its not water proof but it holds up well and I wore it all last winter. I think it was about £100

Meadowfinch · 11/10/2025 10:19

I have a Schoffel shooting jacket which is now on its 6th year and still looks like new. Warm, windproof, waterproof, removable hood. Not cheap but worth the money so far.

Devilsmommy · 11/10/2025 10:19

Trespass Audrina. £40 on M&M. The absolute best winter puffa coat ever. And it's not a horrible bulky puffa either

declutteringmymind · 11/10/2025 10:20

My north face parka is indestructible and keeps me lovely and warm. I’ve had it 6 years and it’s as good as new despite hours being a football mum and everything else.

NapoleonsToe · 11/10/2025 10:21

I've got a Didrikson and a Seasalt Janelle. Both would work for what you need.

TheLette · 11/10/2025 10:38

Another vote for Seasalt - I have had this one for a few years. It's warm and waterproof, great for school run. https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/plant-hunter-womens-waterproof-coat

Not sure how it would hold up somewhere extremely cold though (I'm in London). Not sure id rely on it for a winter trip to e.g. Iceland!

borntobequiet · 11/10/2025 10:43

In TKMAXX yesterday the rails were stuffed with such coats in a huge range of styles and sizes and with a huge range of prices. I fail to see how anyone couldn’t find something in there. A few years ago I actually found a Didrikson’s parka for £49.99. It’s brilliant.
Trespass coats are very good too, and nicely cut.

Buenovistasc · 11/10/2025 10:45

M&S thermowarmth or their stormwear jackets, I thought great value for money and useful pockets!

LittleBitofBread · 11/10/2025 10:47

Scandi brands are the best; they don't mess about when it comes to practicality, but are a bit more stylish than some. Didrikson's, Ilse Jacobsen... Pricey but there are usually a fair few on Vinted. I also got a good Ilse Jacobsen one online from an outdoors shop nowhere near me; just google your chosen brands + sale.

GrumpySparkler · 11/10/2025 10:51

I have this from mountain warehouse. It's been great and I'm outdoors quite a bit with dogs and kids. I have worn it on the school run and even had some compliments on how nice it is!

Orla Kiely’s waterproof longline jacket is half price at the moment and ticks all your boxes. (Size down though). It’s really good quality.

Lands End makes fabulous waterproof winter coats with brilliant pockets. I live in an area with harsh winters (upstate New York), and their Squall Parka is my go-to. They also last forever, and the customer service is excellent.

Didrikson - bought mine 2nd hand. Warm. Waterproof. Love it. Washes well too.

or
Baleno Kensington with the zip in fleece or gilet. Loved my dog walking coat so much I bought another one for smart!!

7inchesFromTheMiddaySun · 11/10/2025 22:30

Another vote for mountain warehouse!

QueenAnnesHat · 11/10/2025 23:12

Another vote for Didrikson. I took mine to the Norwegian coast in February and was toasty.
i also have a Seasalt Janelle for those slightly warmer/less cold days.

MySweetGeorgina · 11/10/2025 23:26

But which particular Ilse Jacobsen coat?

which Didrikson coat?

I have the Seasalt Janelle and it does the job but it is quite heavy and ugly and plasticky but maybe thst is unavoidable. Keeps me warm and dry though so should not be do bitchy about it 😁
