Holy grail of warm waterproof winter coat

Claymoreiron · 11/10/2025 09:14

I looked but can’t find a recent thread on this. I need to replace my aged and not very waterproof puffa coat.

Needs To be mid thigh at least, waterproof and insulated. Can’t afford NF and I’m not a huge fan of things that are waisted, what are all the school run mums and dog walkers buying in preparation for the winter?

I mean I wasn’t a seasalt lover either but the seasalt Janelle is hard to beat for a shit weather dog walking coat!

https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/janelle-knee-length-waterproof-raincoat

My Seasalt coat leaked at the seams after a couple of years. My Joules waterproof coat is still waterproof after 5 years.

I would not go with a wadded or fleece lined coat personally. The last couple of winters have been too mild. I find the standard Joules waterproof coat with a jumper or fleece under on cold days is much more usable.

I have a heavy, long Tog24 coat that is waterproof and a good coat, but far too hot for 50 weeks of the year.

I bought a changing robe from beach bum for dog walks. It is very warm, waterproof and has plenty of pockets. It is handy for when I need to walk the dog before work as it is quite loose. Bought a smaller size so it does not drown me.

merrymelody · 12/10/2025 09:01

@OhDear111I have a Gloverall duffle coat which I wear in the rain. Not a downpour certainly (but then I also have an umbrella) but for chilly winds and drizzly conditions, it’s my go-to coat. I live in Vancouver, so I’m very familiar with rain.

OhDear111 · 12/10/2025 09:03

@merrymelody The op wanted waterproof. They aren’t a technical fabric and are not waterproof. Most folk walking the dog don’t take a brolly. Certainly not in the countryside.

FrothyCothy · 12/10/2025 09:09

I got this one last year though it has presumably been discontinued as very limited sizes. It is a bargain though.

I spend a lot of time of the sidelines of sports pitches in winter and it hasn’t let me down yet.

Rains - warm, waterproof and breathable.

Poobs2022 · 12/10/2025 09:53

I replaced my Uniqlo one with a Gant one but I have to say, the Uniqlo one was really warm. I only switched because it was really worn out. The first winter I had it I wore it in Germany for Xmas markets and I wore it all day with just a t shirt under. Reasonably priced for a winter coat too.

Ohtheplaces · 12/10/2025 09:55

When you start to look at technical spec,
it is surprising how many aren’t actually waterproof or wind proof . That Regatta one up thread is ‘water repellent’. I had. White Stuff one similar and it was soaked in seconds and took ages to dry out.

I find it really hard to buy online and get the size right. I was replacing an Esprit coat I’ve had over ten years. Waterproof, warm; it took me three returns to get the right size when I got that. For this reason I just couldn’t be bothered with Vinted - too risky.

OhDear111 · 12/10/2025 03:02

@MarxistMagsYou cannot get windproof and waterproof for peanuts. The fabrics are technical fabrics and seams must be sealed and the fastenings such that rain cannot drive in - at wrists and front.

M&S often do a waterproof one via their Goodmove range. I’ve got the long line waterproof parka - and it is! I’ve a Seasalt Janelle - it’s water proof. I don’t agree is “plasticy”. Mine is quite soft. Cheap end manufacturers won’t use expensive waterproof fabrics so of course the coats cost money but I’ve had my Janelle for over 10 years. I’ve a waterproof Musto from the dark ages. Pay once and buy well.

I mean not peanuts but I paid £60 for this the other day. It’s waterproof and windproof

That’s a great spec for the price. Heck, it’s a great spec full stop!

Roundthebend45 · 12/10/2025 15:35

i also like Didriksons - I bought mine from Sport Pursuit though (you have to sign up with your email but it’s free) - so much cheaper! They have some in at the moment that might work for you. https://www.sportpursuit.com/products?bid=1741&src_search=Didriksons

I also bought one that’s just waterproof and windproof but no insulation, and a not waterproof padded one that’s like wearing a duvet
think it was £124 for all 3

I've been wearing Lands End Squall coats for years. Nothing has got through them and I have working dogs, out in all weathers. One long wet day on a shoot, I was the only person left dry by the end of the day.

Anjelika · 12/10/2025 17:25

I've got a Didrikson's which looks just like the Antje on Blacks website. It is very waterproof! This will be my 3rd winter in it. Love that Regatta plum one posted upthread. I'm an 8/10 and only size 8 left. Not sure it would fit over jumpers etc.

umberellaonesie · 12/10/2025 17:32

Landsend stadium squall jacket is my favourite dog walking jacket. It is so warm , long (to mid calf)and waterproof. I m in Scotland so warmth and waterproof is essential.
I look forward to the temperature dropping so I can put it on.
I wear a sea salt jacket in the spring and summer but reallyove my landsend coat

Have a look at Seasalt

This.

My Seasalt Janelle coat is the best coat I've ever owned. It's warm, windproof, waterproof, has sensible pockets and still looks like new after 5+ years.

The only downside to it is that 50% of the women in my town appear to own one, so it looks like some sort of local uniform on cold days.

MissConductUS · 12/10/2025 17:38

Here's a quick Lands End story. When My husband and I met in 1995 he had a Lands End Squall Parka. In 2018, the zipper on it broke when it was in the tumble dryer. He called to order a new one, and mentioned what had happened to the old one. He had bought it so long ago that the record of him purchasing it was no longer in their system, but since the zipper failed, they gave him a 50% discount on the new one and a purchase credit of $40. so the new one cost him almost nothing.

It's that kind of company.

WhyDoesItAlways · 12/10/2025 18:07

I have a Helly Hansen down coat which is waterproof. I found they're one of the few brands that so waterproof rather than resistant as they specialise in sailing wear. Had it about 5 years now, washes well and still going strong.

It's the aden down parka

MarxistMags · 12/10/2025 02:49

@Wiennetta No wonder the models all look miserable - they have just seen the prices of the coats and jackets !

Great contribution to the thread 👏

Autisticburnouthell · 12/10/2025 08:43

Sea salt just doesn’t look warm enough to me. Is it warm?

The Janelle has a quilted lining and I find mine very warm, and I say that as someone who has to have the heating on indoors the minute the temperature drops below 20. And it's really windproof.

I also like the way that mud just seems to drop off it once it's dry.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 12/10/2025 19:48

Dodrikson Erika Parka. Hands down the best coat I’ve ever owned. Properly waterproof and windproof

Ilse Jacobsen without question..

I have three I different colours.. love them..lovely colours, fit, wash well..and coat warm within ugh feeling bulky

https://www.ilsejacobsen.com

second this used every single day for walking dogs. I don't like puffa they big and bulky and for proper heat you need layers not bulk. so I wear my thermals long sleeve jumpers or sweaters and then coat and scarf. that works for me on long dog walks by the sea. also look for wool blend coats wool os a natural water repplent aswell as being warm

Threegirlsonemum · 12/10/2025 22:37

Honestly my zavetti winter coat is the warmest coat ive ever had. Third year with it and still in perfect condition
