Holy grail of warm waterproof winter coat

I looked but can’t find a recent thread on this. I need to replace my aged and not very waterproof puffa coat.

Needs To be mid thigh at least, waterproof and insulated. Can’t afford NF and I’m not a huge fan of things that are waisted, what are all the school run mums and dog walkers buying in preparation for the winter?

Will be sporting my DryRobe once again. It’s waterproof, windproof, pretty warm but I can put huge jumpers or even a puffer jacket underneath if I need to. I don’t care if it’s a wankerish thing to wear it every day it’s a brilliant coat for bad weather.

In TKMAXX yesterday the rails were stuffed with such coats in a huge range of styles and sizes and with a huge range of prices. I fail to see how anyone couldn’t find something in there. A few years ago I actually found a Didrikson’s parka for £49.99. It’s brilliant.
Trespass coats are very good too, and nicely cut.

I always say I never find anything in TK Maxx but I ate my words when I tried their online site. I bought a DKNY winter jacket and debated a French Connection one. Both were good quality, wind proof, rain proof, and there were several more I could have chosen. Prices were good too. My budget was £400
and I spent £59. Would have spent more but couldn’t find anything that met the bill.

i bought a regatta one recently and was pleasantly surprised and went back to buy another in a different style

But which particular Ilse Jacobsen coat?

which Didrikson coat?

I have the Seasalt Janelle and it does the job but it is quite heavy and ugly and plasticky but maybe thst is unavoidable. Keeps me warm and dry though so should not be do bitchy about it 😁

I got this Didrikson in 2017. Got it to watch DD in year 7 and it’s just about to come back out for year 13. It also faired well in Iceland. It’s barely aged. Unlike me!

I love the thumb holes and inside pocket. I need a slightly smarter black coat as well but nothing measures up to mine!

This is similar to one I found on eBay. It is waterproof and warm

I got one I really like from Boden. it had an inner part that is fleece lined and cosy and can be removed and nice fake fur in the pockets.

MarxistMags · 12/10/2025 02:49

@Wiennetta No wonder the models all look miserable - they have just seen the prices of the coats and jackets !

OhDear111 · 12/10/2025 03:02

@MarxistMagsYou cannot get windproof and waterproof for peanuts. The fabrics are technical fabrics and seams must be sealed and the fastenings such that rain cannot drive in - at wrists and front.

M&S often do a waterproof one via their Goodmove range. I’ve got the long line waterproof parka - and it is! I’ve a Seasalt Janelle - it’s water proof. I don’t agree is “plasticy”. Mine is quite soft. Cheap end manufacturers won’t use expensive waterproof fabrics so of course the coats cost money but I’ve had my Janelle for over 10 years. I’ve a waterproof Musto from the dark ages. Pay once and buy well.

PuzzledWatermelon · 12/10/2025 03:11

Seasalt Janelle here 👋

merrymelody · 12/10/2025 03:43

Gloverall duffle coat!

Dippythedino · 12/10/2025 04:18

I need to replace my Tresspass winter coat after 10 years so place marking.

OhDear111 · 12/10/2025 04:20

@merrymelodyAre they waterproof? Soggy mess in a downpour I think.

Bjorkdidit · 12/10/2025 06:23

I wouldn't go too insulated as it's rarely cold enough to need it in the UK if you need it for walking. Better to go unpadded or only very lightly padded and then layer up if it's colder otherwise half the time it will be too warm to wear.

If you want a Didriksons they've got some good reductions at Cotswold Outdoors

What is your budget op?

Bigpinksweater · 12/10/2025 07:05

Passenger has great non waisted knee length parkas. Very waterproof and weather insulated

Tiddlersfish · 12/10/2025 07:15

I really like my passenger dry robe-esque for the school run and wood walks - I know it’s a bit wankery but it does the job and I got it in the sale and it fits over me and the toddler in the sling when he gets bored of walking

I'm just about to buy this one in hazel to replace by two year old seasalt coat which is a bit faded. I live in Scotland and just need to be warm and waterproof. I love the fleece lined hood and shoulders.

I like them. They did a great Alaska parka with a fleece lined hood. The newer version not as nice I don’t think,

I’m looking at this one too. Would mind posting a review for us when it arrives? Thank you 🙏

Autisticburnouthell · 12/10/2025 08:43

Sea salt just doesn’t look warm enough to me. Is it warm?

PruthePrune · 12/10/2025 08:44

Another vote for Didrikson's. They are not cheap but they last forever. I 've got one that is over 15 years old and is still going strong.
