Most versatile autumn jacket

If your style is a bit Toast, a bit Scandi architect, a bit cliché Parisien and a teeeeny bit Claudia in the castle, what transitional/autumn jacket do you find most useful??

I have very light shacket that gets a lot of wear but I'm sat here in it bloody freezing!! I have a long cashmere/wool blend wrap coat, and Didriksons for walking etc, but I'm after something casual, I think a fairly boxy and maybe collarless shape, that will keep me warm and work with cords, jeans, barrel legs etc and maybe the odd skirt. I like neutrals and muted darkish soft colours, and would prefer to buy second-hand if poss.

Do you have a jacket that you're glad to get out at this time every year, and if so what the heck is it?!

Oh hang on, you don’t want polyester, do you?

Wool is your best bet if you want warm and somewhat waterproof. Toast do some lovely ones (I got a Toast duffel coat in a charity shop last week, I was so chuffed!) and one of my best ones I bought from Fat Face about six years ago.

I’d go for a three quarter length coat if you feel the cold. Jackets don’t really cut it for us nesh types.

Thank you! I have a couple of PS coats and I love them but what I'm after here is something for brisk autumnal/early winter days when I'm not too worried about rain (I know...), and thinking about it further, if would be handy if it was as a bit smarter/useful for going out. I've been trawling wool bikers on Vinted and there's some nice options, so might give one of those a try. I do want a more jackety one though - so lined - rather than the boiled wool cardy type.

I live rurally, and have a Seeland shooting jacket. Warm, waterproof and perfect with jeans and boots. Can be smart without much effort.

Do people think the Blackberry Roake is more of a burgundy than a purple? I’m tempted but it’s hard to see with that teeny sample.

It is hard to tell, I agree! I think it’s going to be a deep merlot type colour. I can only report back when I get it.

DoubtfulCat · 03/10/2025 07:43

The ochre colour was pretty well represented by the sample and I wasn’t disappointed, @Lanzaroteorgrotty

That Roake jacket is what I call a kimono jacket and is all over Etsy for much cheaper.

I'm sure it is, but I think Roake's whole ethos, e.g. working practices, quality, sustainability etc, are the selling point.

I have a not dissimilar one I picked up from a French market a while ago for about €30, but generally you get what you pay for 😃

Does anybody know any real live scandi architects?

@Missohnoyoubetterdont , sure, but the cut and the quality won't be the same.

Hephebe · 03/10/2025 22:54

Haha no @BettyTurpinPies, but I'd love to know what they think of the MN stéréotype (archetype?!)

Well, this thread has prompted me to buy my first ever Vinted purchase: a pure wool Jaeger tweed jacket for £30. Never been brave enough before to Vint- coining a new verb- before.

I can see why Vinted is so addictive. I saw lots of lovely blazers. Nervous about buying with no returns but hope it's ok as I have bought from a buyer with 5 stars.

Hephebe · 04/10/2025 19:36

Exciting times, ! I've had overwhelmingly good experiences on Vinted so fingers crossed for you. I've also just bought a wool jacket - a black biker style - now I just need it to stay dry for a few months 😁

Look lovely to me and just pointing out for those of us who can’t afford the real thing.

At last a pic of the new blackberry colour jacket from Roake. Not got mine yet..

Beautiful colour @SpiralSister !

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I found an old jacket I'd forgotten about in my winter suitcase, and it's been very useful so far - sort of a quilted soft cotton bomber jacket style (but a bit boxier) in a dark charcoal grey. My only problem is that a lot of my wardrobe is grey and black so it's all a bit draining, but it's a lovely warm jacket that I'll wear a lot again this A/W.

Also saw some lovely quilted velvet jackets in a similar style to the Roake one at my local market - I've seen that style a lot in French markets but not so much over here. The colours were gorgeous - teal, rust, forest green.

Isn’t it lovely to come across a forgotten gem, @Hephebe?

Enjoy it - a maybe a velvet number too ( I am a dreadful enabler!)

Lanzaroteorgrotty · 25/10/2025 12:26

@Hephebe maybe a bright scarf to cheer it up? I quite like those triangular ones.

That Roake jacket looks lovely, I’m looking forward to receiving mine. I think it will be really versatile and a bit less draining than the Black.

Well this still hasn't arrived thanks to fucking Evri. I likely won't get it and will have to look for another.

ByTwinklyDreamer · 25/10/2025 16:37

I have a Mango dark khaki/dull olive bomber type of jacket. It’s cosy like a coat but jacket length with a zip and good pockets.

ByTwinklyDreamer · 25/10/2025 16:41

This is it.
